Rapper Remy Ma a.k.a Reminisce Smith has been sentenced to eight years in prison for shooting her friend over $3,000.Many are devastated by the judges ruling as this would mean that Remy’s seven-year-old son wil be without a mother for eight vital years of his life
VIA NY1:

Remy Ma, the Grammy-nominated rapper whose real name is Remy Smith, was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in prison for shooting a woman outside a Chelsea nightclub last summer. The 26-year-old rapper said the shooting was an accident, and her lawyer said they will appeal the conviction. Smith could have faced up to 25 years behind bars.

“The judge I think, relatively speaking, was lenient,” said Ivan Fisher, Smith’s attorney. “We of course were hoping for the five-year sentence, the least she could give, basically on account of the impact Remy’s incarceration is going to have on her son, Jason.”
“I was upset because it was an injustice. Remy is totally innocent. Some people will do and say anything for money,” said Papoose, a Brooklyn rapper and Smith’s fiancĂ©, who was taken out of the courtroom by security after an outburst following the sentencing.

Yesterday, Smith intended to marry Papoose at Rikers Island.

However, according to published reports, when guards searched Papoose, they found a small handcuff key. He is now reportedly banned from the jail until November.

Tuesday, Papoose called the incident ridiculous, saying the key was just a part of a key chain, and he’d brought it on visits to the prison in the past.
