A woman in Germany has given birth to fraternal twin boys. The first baby named Ryan has lighter skin and blue eyes;the second twin is dark-skinned with brown eyes. The twins’ mother,Florence, who was born in Ghana,West Africa, gave birth to her Black and White twins on July 11th:

I’ve seen other stories with the same thing happening. They are adorable! You never can tell when, what and how those genes will come out!!

Sorry, but the “white” twin doesn’t look white. Looks like a light-skinned hispanic or light-skinned black child. Babies usually darken as they age so don’t be surprised if the “white” twin looks different in the coming months. And any two parents who have the gene for blue eyes can produce a blue-eyed child. Look at Solange and her ex-husband. They have a blue-eyed son whose complexion is similar in tone to the twin pictured above. Does that make Solange’s son “white?”

I also find it curious how fluid the definition of “white” has become. The doctors and media automatically label the lighter- skinned child “white” just because he has a lighter skin tone and eye color than his brother. Yet the definition of “black” has become very rigid. According to some people, to be black you must look like Whoopi Goldberg or Shaq or the dark-skinned twin pictured above.

And perhaps those German doctors should travel to Brazil or Puerto Rico or maybe take a class in genetics. Due to the great genetic mixture within those populations it is not uncommon for Brazilian or Puerto Rican parents to have children that are phenotypically different from each other and even the parents. I saw a program on PBS a couple of years ago on the people of Brazil. The show featured a couple who had several children. Both parents had olive complexions. The mother had straight hair and the father had kinky-curly hair. Both had brown eyes. They had two teenage daughters–one had a complexion similar to Halle Berry, the other a complexion similar to Lisa Bonet’s oldest daughter. The dark-skinned daughter had kinky-curly hair like Tracee Ellis Ross. The other daughter had short kinky hair that she wore in a small afro. They had an infant son with blue eyes, olive skin, and straight brown hair. And two other children–a girl and boy–who had medium brown skin, brown eyes, and kinky-curly hair. The parents didn’t seemed fazed by the diversity within their own family. Yet these German doctors found it curious that an INTERRACIAL couple would have two sons that are phenotypically different from each other. My goodness, you can find a diversity in skin tone and grades of hair in African-American families. These German doctors and the media are late!

I can see why the doctors were surprised. One would not expect a white German to have the genes necessary to produce such a dark skinned child. People tend to assume fair whites or dark blacks are 100% white/black. Blacks have been living in Germany for centuries, but the Germany isn’t the first to come to mind when thinking of genetically mixed populations like the above mentioned Brazil or Black America.

Did the doctors label the lighter twin “white”? The article says the doctor thought “everything was as usual” when Ryan was delivered. It seems like the media called him white for the contrast. “Woman gives birth to black and medium-brown skinned twins” isn’t as big of an attention grabber.

Either way though, they look like a happy family. I wish them all the best.

The “white” twin does not looks white, but the “black” one does not look mixed. But that’s genetics for you.

The lighter twin looks obviously mixed race, but the darker twin looks as if he has no obvious admixture. I’d say DNA testing is in order!

Wow, I think that it wasn’t expected for the mother to have such a brown baby, with her white husband. She most really have strong dominant genes. Both babies are adorable and I really don’t care what color they are. I wish her and the family the best.

What is African black and African American black?

Those kids may as well be born in Africa. Not all Africans or black people in Africa are blue black with very course hair. There are very dark ones with different texture hair as well as light ones with coiurser hair.

Please TRAVEL to Africa (different countries/tribes, etc.) and you will stop making these Jim Crow statements.
I have seen South Africans that look Asian with kinky hair and people from Sudan that look indian that are not. So please stop the ignorance..

It puzzles me on why you would single maryamb419 and I out. Other people have made similar comments as well. I should have none Naija Gal was Nigerian. That self important air is all around your statement. The fact that I said she may be the sweetest person meant that her surface was not the only thing that was important. That seems to be what you picked out of everything we said. It’s not my fault you are Nigerian. It’s not my fault you got teased in school because you probably favor the lady in the pic. The fact that you took it personally speaks volumes. I sorry for whatever pain you may have felt because I said I didn’t think the lady was pretty. If you favor her in anyway then I can say I understand your angst but you can’t go preaching and being self-righteous because I don’t get all hot & sweaty for that broad nose and milky eye look.

I didn’t mean it literally obviously the way you took it are you would not have taken the time to go to m-w.com to find the definition. I don’t know if that is for your benefit or mine. When I said how are you any different than a racist I meant due to your close mindedness. Hopefully that is not to much for you to digest. Maybe I should call my sis in law and have her break it down to you. Since both of you obviously have the broad nose so far up in the air you can’t see things for anyone’s perspectives but your own. Be careful with those huge nostrils in the air you might suck up more than you bargain for.LOL

    @Mary

Thank you so much for guilty plea.

I see that you are winding down and tiring out. (There you go again with those grammical errors…)

    1. Princess and Prince?! Where did you see that?

Again, you are distancing yourself from others by making yourself unapproachable with your superficial comments…everyone (besides Steffie) can see that…

Like I said earlier, we are one-in-the-same…my African family raised all of us to live everyday as if it were our last, nurture and lift ourselves and others around us up (just like yours)…not tear each other down…like you.

Maybe you need to run into some more Africans…because you are the one acting like a bigot…discriminating against others and relying on fabricated beliefs against an ethnicity (…”As well as most of the Nigerian people I have come in contact with. Also what’s with them all claiming to be princesses and princes? Care to explain. It’s amazing how African look down on African-Americans.”)

Deep down, you’re AFRICAN and you can never, ever run from that…ever.

Do you have children? I had to ask.

Anyway, peace be with you my broad-nosed, milky eyed sistah…

The reason I said what I did about the African I met is because that is my truth. All of the Nigerians I have met have come off as mightier than thou. They have good qualities. I love how my sister in law takes care of her family back home. I have a few friends that are married to Nigerians so I am around them all the time. My friends say they love the way the women take care of family, but they are hard to be around because the are very condescending.

As far as my grammatical errors as long as you get my meaning is my only concern. I never liked language arts in school I thought it was boring as hell. I excelled in anything I found challenging. Math and Science were my strong points.

I have four beautiful kids and I am a stay at home mom.

Nope I didn’t say they couldn’t correct them. I said I didn’t care if I made them as long as my meaning came across. Why you so worried about my grammatical errors you should work on reading comprehension. I cause you don’t know what that means. It means understanding what you read. If not seeking understanding. Next time ask what I meant instead of putting words in my mouth.

To be honest, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. What may be beautiful to you may be another thing to me. My field of work is politics and we agree and disagree constantly. But my colleagues, peers and I still continue to respect one another. Even though a fellow blogger has decided to resort to name calling, I’m going to be the bigger person.
