A woman in Germany has given birth to fraternal twin boys. The first baby named Ryan has lighter skin and blue eyes;the second twin is dark-skinned with brown eyes. The twins’ mother,Florence, who was born in Ghana,West Africa, gave birth to her Black and White twins on July 11th:

The twin boys, named Ryan and Leo, are the offspring of mixed-race couple Florence Addo-Gerth, from Ghana, and her German husband Stephan Gerth. The infants caused a sensation at the Sana Hospital in Lichtenberg, Germany, where they were born last Friday.Birgit Weber, the doctor who helped deliver the babies by ceasarean section, said that in 20 years of practice, this was the first time she had seen differently-coloured twins.“Ryan came first, and everything was as usual,” Fox News quoted Weber as saying.”But when Leo was born, I couldn’t believe my eyesThe infants caused a sensation at the Sana Hospital in Lichtenberg, Germany, where they were born last Friday.Birgit Weber, the doctor who helped deliver the babies by ceasarean section, said that in 20 years of practice, this was the first time she had seen differently-coloured twins.“Ryan came first, and everything was as usual,” Fox News quoted Weber as saying.”But when Leo was born, I couldn’t believe my eyes

I’ve seen other stories with the same thing happening. They are adorable! You never can tell when, what and how those genes will come out!!

  • black is says:

Sorry, but the “white” twin doesn’t look white. Looks like a light-skinned hispanic or light-skinned black child. Babies usually darken as they age so don’t be surprised if the “white” twin looks different in the coming months. And any two parents who have the gene for blue eyes can produce a blue-eyed child. Look at Solange and her ex-husband. They have a blue-eyed son whose complexion is similar in tone to the twin pictured above. Does that make Solange’s son “white?”

I also find it curious how fluid the definition of “white” has become. The doctors and media automatically label the lighter- skinned child “white” just because he has a lighter skin tone and eye color than his brother. Yet the definition of “black” has become very rigid. According to some people, to be black you must look like Whoopi Goldberg or Shaq or the dark-skinned twin pictured above.

And perhaps those German doctors should travel to Brazil or Puerto Rico or maybe take a class in genetics. Due to the great genetic mixture within those populations it is not uncommon for Brazilian or Puerto Rican parents to have children that are phenotypically different from each other and even the parents. I saw a program on PBS a couple of years ago on the people of Brazil. The show featured a couple who had several children. Both parents had olive complexions. The mother had straight hair and the father had kinky-curly hair. Both had brown eyes. They had two teenage daughters–one had a complexion similar to Halle Berry, the other a complexion similar to Lisa Bonet’s oldest daughter. The dark-skinned daughter had kinky-curly hair like Tracee Ellis Ross. The other daughter had short kinky hair that she wore in a small afro. They had an infant son with blue eyes, olive skin, and straight brown hair. And two other children–a girl and boy–who had medium brown skin, brown eyes, and kinky-curly hair. The parents didn’t seemed fazed by the diversity within their own family. Yet these German doctors found it curious that an INTERRACIAL couple would have two sons that are phenotypically different from each other. My goodness, you can find a diversity in skin tone and grades of hair in African-American families. These German doctors and the media are late!

  • alicia says:

This happened in London last year.DNA is amazing!!!!!

  • Pico says:

I can see why the doctors were surprised. One would not expect a white German to have the genes necessary to produce such a dark skinned child. People tend to assume fair whites or dark blacks are 100% white/black. Blacks have been living in Germany for centuries, but the Germany isn’t the first to come to mind when thinking of genetically mixed populations like the above mentioned Brazil or Black America.

Did the doctors label the lighter twin “white”? The article says the doctor thought “everything was as usual” when Ryan was delivered. It seems like the media called him white for the contrast. “Woman gives birth to black and medium-brown skinned twins” isn’t as big of an attention grabber.

Either way though, they look like a happy family. I wish them all the best.

  • Shelly British says:

awww bless ther little cotton socks :) as long as there healthy thats all that matters…there gorgeous!!!

  • Joy says:

The White twin just looks light skinned to me!

  • the floacist says:

Basically what the others’ said… Black people come in all shades.

  • january says:

The “white” twin does not looks white, but the “black” one does not look mixed. But that’s genetics for you.

  • Lynn says:

The lighter twin looks obviously mixed race, but the darker twin looks as if he has no obvious admixture. I’d say DNA testing is in order!

  • Steffie says:

Wow, I think that it wasn’t expected for the mother to have such a brown baby, with her white husband. She most really have strong dominant genes. Both babies are adorable and I really don’t care what color they are. I wish her and the family the best.

  • Mahesha says:

O.K. they are a Weird looking couple I’m sorry. More so the wife too…and the little “black” one is weird looking as well. God bless them but I just had to state the obvious!

  • Cris says:

To BLACK, Solange son eyes are grey not blue,

  • SHANGO BAPTISTE says:

LOL.. I was just thinking that both parents look weird LMAO..

I am going to tell you this, The light one will get darker and the dark one will change in features. They are both cute little guys.

As for the two girls in England where one looks black and one white, the white looking one actually has black features, it is just that she is very light, but if you look at her hair, it is very curly. And the darker one was actually darker than both parents.. LOL

    Here are the above twins

  • maryamb419 says:

    God forgive me.

  • Steffie says:

LOL, Maryamb419, I love your honesty, the mother is funny looking.

  • obviously says:

WEIRD LOOKING FAMILY BUT INA GOOD WAY

  • Sorry says:

Just goes to show that not all mixed babies are…um………

  • Sherree says:

It can happen if the mother is black, and the father is white, or the other way around, you can have a light skin and a dark skin baby.

  • Lynn says:

usually a fully white looking child is likely in twin births if one or both parents are mixed race.

  • Lynn says:

usually a fully white looking child is likely in twin births if one or both parents are mixed race. I’m still not convinced that the darker skinned baby is of mixed race parentage, however, Sandra Laing never looked like she could be related to either of her birth parents either.

  • uriah says:

hmm I guess jenny on the jeffersons really was mixed. and so was chicken george from roots

  • Macie says:

    What do their shirts say??????

  • Naija Gal says:

    @MACIE

Their shirts say, “I was born in Oskar!”…go figure.

  • Naija Gal says:

    @maryamb419 and steffy

…y’all are so rude. How does, “stating the obvious” benefit you? I wouldn’t consider either of you pretty (FAR from it with those attitudes)…

So, if you don’t have anything nice to say…(say it with me)…don’t say anything at all.

  • ARROZ CON POLLO says:

Half of you just type because you can. Why isn’t the darker one the man’s child? There is another picture of them and the darker one isn’t all that dark and he favors the other one.

Children change. They look one way now and in a year, their skin color and hair texture change.

And as for only mixed race having fully white children, that is a joke. THere are many cases where a fully black woman or man have fully white looking children.

The only difference is that it doesn’t happen all the time on one family. You will tend to have variations with every child added.

  • jasmine says:

I’ve heard of this happening before…I was amazed when I first heard something like this but now it’s like…ok great. It just goes to show how related we are regardless of the boundaries we set around each other…the husband probably has some black bkground he didn’t know about or something like that…

I don’t get what all the wonder and amazement is about. They’re twins, but obviously fraternal as opposed to identical.

  • Jen says:

Both of these babies look Black…like African-American Black, not African Black.

  • SHANGO BAPTISTE says:

What is African black and African American black?

Those kids may as well be born in Africa. Not all Africans or black people in Africa are blue black with very course hair. There are very dark ones with different texture hair as well as light ones with coiurser hair.

Please TRAVEL to Africa (different countries/tribes, etc.) and you will stop making these Jim Crow statements.
I have seen South Africans that look Asian with kinky hair and people from Sudan that look indian that are not. So please stop the ignorance..

Wow, I’m just surprised that you took that comment to heart like that. I still feel the same way, the woman is funny looking. You can call me rude but so be it. It puzzles me on why you would single maryamb419 and I out. Other people have made similar comments as well. You really contradicted yourself as well, remember it was you who said “So, if you don’t have anything nice to say…(say it with me)…don’t say anything at all”. What you said wasn’t nice at all. But I refuse to entertain you any longer. Hope all is well with everyone. I love Black Celebrity Kids.

  • Not Buying It says:

O and for those who don’t know why maryamb419 is a dushbag (aside from the obvious) she condemns people for having opinions that differ from hers but can’t take it dished to her. She must think her opinions reign supreme and should be impervious from attack when she attacks others….I guess…lol

  • Steffie says:

    @Naija Gal
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I just seen your pic on Bossip and your name is african_4_eva. Are you African? Did you get offended because the woman was African and we made negative comments about her appearance? If so, you made the wrong assumption. I could care less if the woman was Asian, White or etc… If she’s funny looking to me, then it is what it is. @Not Buying It, I totally agree with you.

  • Steffie says:

Opps, I agree with the comment about people being able to express their opinions.

  • Naija Gal says:

    @Not Buying It

THANK YOU!!!! Unfortunately, Ms. Maryamb419 fails to see that…oh what a horrible web she weaves.

  • Naija Gal says:

    @ Steffie

Oh, you’re back…if I recall, I remember you saying, “…I refuse to entertain you any longer.”

    I guess you couldn’t resist.

Anyway, to answer your ignorant question. Yes, that is me and I am 100% Nigerian (hence the name Naija Gal and african_4_eva).

Florence Addo-Gerth being African has nothing to do with me being offended. Ladies, like you, who refuse to look beyond her physical appearance is what I find to be offensive. No matter what, you are presenting yourself to be a shallow individual…and that, my sistah, stanks!! (not stinks, but STANKS)

Even Ms. Maryamb419 knew that she was at fault: “God forgive me.”
-14th post from the top AFTER making her initial comment-

So, Ms. Steffie…please, go back to your little corner, regroup and come back when you are ready to have a real conversation.
    ——————————————————————

    @Maryamb419

…I didn’t think you could do it BUT you did…congrats on making yet ANOTHER weak a$$ arguement. Racist?! Honey, here is the definition of a racist…are you ready?:

Racism, by its simplest definition, is discrimination based on the racial groups to which people belong. People with racist beliefs might hate certain groups of people according to their racial groups. In the case of institutional racism, certain racial groups may be denied rights or benefits, or get preferential treatment. Racism typically points out taxonomic differences between different groups of people, even though anybody can be racialised, independently of their somatic differences. According to the United Nations conventions, there is no distinction between the term racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination. (thank you wikipedia)

Clearly, having nothing to do with the current arguement…thus, having no relation to me.

Okay, here is the definition of one who is superficial-you- (shallow), ready?:

Superficial is a general term meaning “regarding the surface”, often metaphorically. Both in the literal as in the metaphorical sense the term has often a negative connotation based on the idea that deeper parts are also important to consider…A person who exhibits a “superficial” comprehension of some or many subjects may be negatively attributed as being shallow, materialistic, and even exhibiting false emotions through an exaggerated affect display. Occasionally they may be pseudointellectual. (thanks wiki)….Ms. Maryamb419 all the WAY!!!

By the way, you may need to join Steffie in the corner as well. I’m sure you two would have great conversations.

    Thank you.

  • maryamb419 says:

That is hilarious two of the most cynical and closed minded people would agree on something. ROTFL. LOL

First of all Not buying it you are to funny. I know you are trying to bait me. Not only am I not trying to force my opinions on other. When did I condemn anyone for not agreeing with me. All is ask is for one example if you have two that’s even better.

Second of all of if you try and bait someone at least spell your barbs the right way. LOL It’s spelled douche bag. Seeing as how you are one I would think you would know how to spell it. There goes that theory.LOL

  • maryamb419 says:

I should have none Naija Gal was Nigerian. That self important air is all around your statement. The fact that I said she may be the sweetest person meant that her surface was not the only thing that was important. That seems to be what you picked out of everything we said. It’s not my fault you are Nigerian. It’s not my fault you got teased in school because you probably favor the lady in the pic. The fact that you took it personally speaks volumes. I sorry for whatever pain you may have felt because I said I didn’t think the lady was pretty. If you favor her in anyway then I can say I understand your angst but you can’t go preaching and being self-righteous because I don’t get all hot & sweaty for that broad nose and milky eye look.

I didn’t mean it literally obviously the way you took it are you would not have taken the time to go to m-w.com to find the definition. I don’t know if that is for your benefit or mine. When I said how are you any different than a racist I meant due to your close mindedness. Hopefully that is not to much for you to digest. Maybe I should call my sis in law and have her break it down to you. Since both of you obviously have the broad nose so far up in the air you can’t see things for anyone’s perspectives but your own. Be careful with those huge nostrils in the air you might suck up more than you bargain for.LOL

  • Not Buying It says:

maryamb419= dushbag (btw, she can tell you how to spell it properly too if you ask her)…hehe

  • maryamb419 says:

It takes one to know one. HeHe. I see you didn’t have any ready examples. That is just another example of you speaking out of your nether regions. LOL That’s why you make a perfect douche bag. Because you have some much personal experience with that area, seeing as though you always speak from a** what better person than you to be a douche bag. You are perfect for the position.

Just so you know I loved playing the dozens growing up so I am all for bantering and barbs. LOL

  • Naija Gal says:

    @Maryamb419

Again, congrats on making yourself look like a buffoon.

Clearly, everyone can read and see who the real idiot is. You seem educated but after reading your last post, I would beg to differ.

Yes, you should have KNOWN (I see that you didn’t use spell check in the first half of your post) that I was Nigerian…better yet, take a glance at my Myspace.com/african_4_eva…you’ll get all the BROAD-NOSED, MILKY EYED, SWEATY AFRICAN-NESS that you can handle…

…and are you foolish enough to bag on your own family member? Please, invite your broad-nosed sister-in-law…we could probably educate you on the importance of looking beyond the surface.

Oh, don’t forget…you wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for your “broad-nosed, big nostriled, milky eyed ancestors” my sistah, you and I are one-in-the-same…

I wonder if they are looking down at you from the heavens and shaking their heads at your ignorance.

Now, go back to your corner…

  • Not Buying It says:

maryamb..you know what you said. If you really think I’m going to scroll through the various posts to find your crude remarks, you’re sadly mistaken. Others agree on this post because they’ve read what you’ve said regarding this article and others that was judgemental; embrace your hypocracy (now check the spelling on that, while you’re at it, spell check your posts)…hehe

  • Not Buying It says:

Further, why are you even talking, aren’t you supposed to be in a corner or something?!?

  • Naija Gal says:

    I co-sign with Not Buying It…

  • maryamb419 says:

Not buying you don’t have to scroll through all most post to get crude remarks all you have to do is read yours. LOL

  • Naija Gal says:

    @Mary

Thank you so much for guilty plea.

I see that you are winding down and tiring out. (There you go again with those grammical errors…)

    1. Princess and Prince?! Where did you see that?

Again, you are distancing yourself from others by making yourself unapproachable with your superficial comments…everyone (besides Steffie) can see that…

Like I said earlier, we are one-in-the-same…my African family raised all of us to live everyday as if it were our last, nurture and lift ourselves and others around us up (just like yours)…not tear each other down…like you.

Maybe you need to run into some more Africans…because you are the one acting like a bigot…discriminating against others and relying on fabricated beliefs against an ethnicity (…”As well as most of the Nigerian people I have come in contact with. Also what’s with them all claiming to be princesses and princes? Care to explain. It’s amazing how African look down on African-Americans.”)

Deep down, you’re AFRICAN and you can never, ever run from that…ever.

Do you have children? I had to ask.

Anyway, peace be with you my broad-nosed, milky eyed sistah…

…from another broad-nosed, milky eyed sistah.
