I don’t know. My son is a scholar and has aspergers. Social situations will always be challenging. We live outside Atlanta and I worry that he is sheltered. But his favorite pastime is reading and he wants to be a scientist. My husband grew up on military bases and doesn’t exhibit street either. So I’m not sure it’s neccessary.

I dont have any children, but I do LOVE Wendy so I couldnt resist commenting. I am tired of people mentioning “drag”..Ok so Wendy likes Wigs, let it GO already. She’s holdin it down. She’s accomplished a LOT and maintains house, home, son and husband..give her PROPS ’cause she’s “every woman” as the song says.

DON’T HAVE ANY KIDS BUT MY NEPHEW LIVES IN A SUBURBS AND IS QUITE A SCHOLAR BUT HE ALSO HAS A LOT OF COMMON SENSE WHICH I BELIEVE IS THE STREET PART OF IT. HE CAN HANDLE HIMSELF IF DROPPED OFF IN THE SO-CALLED HOOD. BUT THEN AGAIN IT’S PEOPLE IN THE STREETS WHO DON’T HAVE COMMON SENSE AND CAN BARELY SURVIVE IN THEIR OWN “HOOD”

OKAY JUST GOTTA SAY LOVE HER BUT SHE LOOKS LIKE A QUEEN. I ALSO GET A DRAG SHOW TYPE OF FEEL FROM HER. BUT NEWHO MY SON HAS BOTH SUBURBAN AND STREET ALSO. HE GET HIS SUBURBANESS (IS THAT EVEN A WORD) FROM ME AND THE STREET FROM BOTH OF US, MOSTLY HIS FATHER THOUGH. HE IS VERY POLITE BUT WILL LET YOU HAVE IT IF HE FEELS THAT YOU ARE DISRESPECTING HIM IN ANYWAY. HES QUICK WITH HIS HANDS SO HES NOT A PUNK BUT HE IS SO LOVABLE AND VERY INTELLIGENT.

Not buying it I have to say my kids are very suburban with a little street . They speak very properly, yet the have attitude with it. They stand up for themselves. The two little stand up for themselves and each other. The two older ones tend to side for their friends because they are very competitive. I am very mouthy and will speak my mind. My kids are like me and I let them as long as they are respectful. I was worried at first about mine because when I grew up, went to a mostly black school and although that has it’s draw backs with black kids teasing the kids that made good grades. I never really had that problem because I was a very social butterfly and while I did well I still was out going and funny. My kids are only a few of the black kids that stay in our neighborhood as well as the school they attend. I was worried they would feel like the odd man out. Now I just make sure they feel comfortable no matter if the people are rich, poor, black or white. Always be true to self. I can tell they are growing up well adjusted. I just hope I can see the end product while I am still sane enough to enjoy it. LOL

My daughter is a perfect mix too.. I’m a city girl myself, but am quite shy & quiet.. my husband is from Queens & you can tell.. she’s got that sassy, bold & tough thang from her dad!

She’s black. On another note, what do you all think about what she said about her son having both street and suburban in him? My husband and I go back and forth about that. Although we don’t have kids yet, he thinks we should make sure our children (if we’re blessed to have them one day) have a bit of street, although they certainly won’t be living anywhere in “the ‘hood.” Are any of you moms out there suburban and middle to upper class who have faced the same dilemma? I’d like to hear your thoughts. Maryamb, you there?
