MOMMY QUOTES: I WANT AN AFRICAN CURLY-HAIRED BARBIE FOR ZAHARA
I want to teach [my kids] about all religions [and culture], and I’m trying to find a way to do that. And when it comes to the subject of adoption, like when my daughter, who’s African, wants her hair to look straight like mummy’s . . . and I look for a Barbie that’s African, and the African Barbie has straight hair! And you know, why has Disney never made a film with an African-American princess? ~Actress Angelina Jolie on not being able to find any African barbies for daughter Zahara (source)
BCK Says: Do you agree with Angelina? Do you find that there are no African curly-haired barbies out there?

I was really astonished by this article… unfortunately in a bad way… ok… i understand wanting to help children no matter the race and totaly agree with it but the “can’t find barbie with curly hair” is just as ridiculous as it gets… well from where i live my grandmother told me the only toys they had were made by themselves so living in the rural zone the toys were made out of corn with buttons as eyes and wrapped up in old cloth
and it would be called a baby doll (well there were plastic toys too but they were as expensive as one or two months salary)… now really would it be that hard just to take a barbie or whatever doll remove the hair… keep some hair from the child’s haircut and glue it to the dolls head? Then you would have the PERFECT hair for the barbie doll
exactly like your daughters… and your daughter would have a unique doll , if you made it right and it looks good you would feel good because of your acomplishment (so put heart in what you do). And last but not least your child would have a barbie doll which could be the envy of the other childern (if this is what you desire) well what other kid could say they got a barbie that matches their hair?
also you could comb it any way you want and if the hair got destroyed in the process you can always get a replacement. (sorry for my english… it’s not my first language) best of wishes to all
and try not to fight over silly matters unless you enjoy to argue and blame somebody else for everything that happens to you.
Disney’s next animated film will have an African-american princess. Disney is way ahead of Angelina. Hasbro used to sell a Barbie sub-line with three African-american characters, each with different facial features and skin tones. They didn’t sell very well. What has been said above is true - Angelina’s adopted daughter is going to have a hard time dealing with the fact that she doesn’t look like her mother, father or siblings… kind of cruel, when you think about it. Ah, well, Zahara will be wealthy for no other reason than being picked out of a crowd.
