HALLE BERRY: “NAHLA WILL GROW UP IN A … DIFFERENT AMERICA
Actress Halle Berry admits to being a baby-clothes shop alcoholic, hating the paparazzi, and so much more in her latest interview with HarpersBazaar .
On how her body has changed since having Nahla:
Having a baby takes so much from you. It’s the most glorious thing you’ll ever do, but the aftermath is not so glorious! So now I’m having to exercise, eat a little bit differently, take a lot more vitamins.
On what being Biracial means to her:
Nahla will grow up in a completely different America. Obama is someone who’s more like her than not, who shares her history. Hopefully she’ll grow up in a world where it’ll be easier than I had it. I had a rough time. I was accused of stuffing the ballot box for my high school prom-queen election because they couldn’t believe the only black girl in the school won.
On having a family and her decreased desire to work:
I used to work a lot because I had nothing better to do. What I’ve learned, especially by having a baby, is that you can’t bring that stuff home anymore. For example, I was alone filming Monster’s Ball. I was married to someone else, and he wasn’t really around much. Thank God that was only a 20-day shoot.
On her guiltiest pleasure:
Very boring, but I buy baby clothes online. Nahla can’t wear all the clothes I’ve bought, and we don’t go anywhere because I can’t deal with the paparazzi. Gabriel’s always like, “She doesn’t even leave the house! Halle, you’ve got to stop.”
On getting married again:
No. I’m done. Also, I happened to find a person who feels done too, and he’s never even been married before. So it works.
On having more children:
Yes. My pregnancy was amazing. I was happy that whole time, I felt good, I had energy, I was like Superwoman. I wish I could feel like that for the rest of my life, that’s how fantastic it was.
On her favorite Hobbies:
I just want to be home for a while and swim in the pool, and I love to garden. I thought, Wouldn’t it be great when Nahla can run out here and pick fresh fruit right in our own backyard? [Points to veggie patch.] We have an apple tree, a plum tree, a pear tree …

I hope they have more kids. Halle seems so content.

Love Halle! I can totally relate to the clothes thing though. I will buy for my daughter when I won’t buy for myself, lol

Meena that’s what being a mother is. GOOD JOB!! I hate seeing a raggedy kid with a momma all done up in name brand clothes. Just trifling.
I agree with Halle’s man though she has to stop. Babies grow so fast in a months time they can grow two clothes sizes. She should keep the shopping down to a minimum until the baby is at least 2.

I love buying baby clothes too.

She looks exactly like her dad (cute). Halle didn’t lie when she said having a baby takes so much from you. Some people body may snap right back but I think everyone experiences something taken from within. Sort of strange how that works.

Does this mean that Halle sees Nahla as she sees herself… Black?
…interesting
I love to see her so happy with motherhood but I’ve always thought she had a few screws loose, i hope shes a great mother

^ why wouldn’t she see herself as black, halle has always considered herself a black woman and most likely that’s how she sees her daughter.

Since Nahla was born I wondered if Halle would raise her to be “black” as her mother did with her. I also wonder what Nahla will consider herself when she gets older.
Suitepuma you are not the only one who thought that…

The number of bi-racial kids that are being born is increasing rapidly. When Halle was born there was only 3 races (Black, white, and Asian) and in the 60′s being 2 different races was ignored. For example if you were white and Asian you were Asian if you were black and white you were black. In 2000 they finally added bi-racial to the census (and now they have black Hispanic and white Hispanic).
I think Halle should raise Nahla as a bi-racial women and to be proud of both sides of her heritage.

Might as well prepare her for life as a black woman. That’s what the rest of the world will see her as no matter what she wants to call it.

I agree with Halle that pregnancy changes your body. I feel as if I aged 5 years and I don’t think I’ll ever feel (or look) as youthful again unless I just go on a drastic health kick!
That being said, having a child is the most overwhelmingly fulfilling experience of my life, even with all its challenges.

Jessica, I know why Halle’s mom chose to raise her as she did. That still does not give any insight as to how she will raise Nahla though lol especially since times have changed.

She should expose Nahla (as I’m sure she will) to both sides of her race. Truthfully, I was a little shock, but happy, that Nahla did not look like a complete white girl since she is mostly white. Whatever Halle decides to do, I’m sure it will be in the best interest of her daughter. Nahla is a beautiful little girl.

I think Halle will expose Nahla to both side of her race but Halle also know that the world isn’t going to see Nahala as two race .

she is beautiful..now ive seen some goodlooking babies but they usually have a sort of baby look but shes jus a lil girls face on a baby..she gorgeous and halle’s genes are strong cos she looks like she has more black in her than she actually has.

I agree with Shay. I think that Halle should expose Nahla to both sides of her race because it’s not fair to shadow one raise because the other is in majority. The important thing is that she knows ALL of her family.

HALLE CHOSE THIS LIFE TO HAVE AN INTERRACIAL CHILD JUST AS HER MOTHER HAD, SO FACE IT THE FATHER IS WHITE IN HALLE’S CASE AND HER DAD WAS BLACK. EARTHA KIT DAUGHER IS WHITE, SHE LOOKS WHITE SO IF YOU LOOK LIKE WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE, THAT IS WHAT YOU SHOULD BE. IT IS SO DIFFICULT TRYING TO PLEASE EVERYBODY. IF I WERE BIRACIAL, I WOULD CONSIDER MYSELF TO IDENTIFY WITH THE RACE I LOOK LIKE. THERE IS NO SENSE IN MAKING NO SENSE OF AN ALREADY NONSENSICAL SITUATION. SINCE SOCIETY WANTS TO DIVIDE PEOPLE UP INTO VARIOUS RACES, MIGHT AS WELL PLAY THE GAME RIGHT OR THE WAY THEY PLAY IT.

Being bi-racial is not a choice , it’s a fact. I’m bi-racial and so are my kids. In my early childhood I grew up in a mixed community, then we move to a middle class all black community. I never felt complete in school or totally accepted. Most of the people I feel more comfortable with are multi-racial people. Some things black , white or Hispanic don’t get. As I got older I understander why because they are on the outside looking in. Certain things only other multi-racial or bi-racial people get. I believe if you spoke to Halle one on one she would feel that she is bi-racial not black. Even as an adult some black and whites has the same closed mind as they did when they were children. Most of the time people feel complete with they are with people that they are alike. Both of my kids are in bi-racial relationships due to that was the norm for them and that where they feel complete. I am one of those mix people that people have always had to ask the question ” what are you” , I would then answer wolf and husky.
