President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle Obama and their daughters Malia,10, and Sasha,8, hosted a luau for members of Congress and their families on the South Lawn of the White House on June 25, 2009. As part of the celebration, the South Lawn was decorated with tiki torches and palm huts. See more pictures now!

They look beautiful and I love the Obama girls, but I’m disappointed they had to get their hair permed/relaxed. I’m still waiting on Michelle to come with that Afro that everybody is so scared of, but that is less likely since they got their girls hair relaxed.
Time to get a new stylist. Might I suggest Khamit Kinks in NYCity.

I didn’t know that she decided to relax the girls hair. I just thought that she kept it blown out and flat ironed for the race and inauguration. Sometimes when I see Malia I think that her hair is still natural b/c she wears a lot of 2 strand twists and braids.

Is there any proof that the girls have relaxed/permed hair? They come from a multi-racial background so who knows or cares? As women of color I would hope that we can move past the hair thing. My personal choice for my hair is to wear loc’s. What ever you choose for yourself and/or children ALL HAIR IS GOOD HAIR!!!

i really don’t wanna come across as critisising the first lady but i always thought it a shame that she obviously felt that straighter or relaxed hair was more acceptable to the american public, i guessed it was mainly for the presidential race? (which is understandable)but since he’s now won that i really would like to see some more natural styles, an afro would be great, but as someone pointed out, they jus may not have hair that does that. i love the obamas anyway

the girls look GREAT! permed or not permed they still look good! Secondly you might think their hair is relaxed but sometimes its not Dont forget that these girls are 25% white which means they still have MULLATO HAIR! they dont have nappy hair!most people with nappy hair are fully black! they are NOT they are still a quarter white they still have their white genes!thats why when sasha was younger she looked mixed! look my neice went to the same dance studio as sasha and when i saw sahsa’s hair natural it looked like a mixed child’s hair,kind of like me when i was younger since my father is white and my mother is black.Just cause they are black doesn’t mean they have nappy hair,my mother is black and she has VERY wavy hair it was longer than mine at a certain point cause dont forget some fully black people that you see may look that they have nappy hair but they dont!how do you not know if their mixed with something like indian?im just tired of people just focusing on the childrens hair.relax its none of our business what michelle decides what to do on her kids hair!we really need to stop with this whole stay natural thing!i know its good to stay natural,hey i stay natural to,but really its not neccesary to be putting the obama kids through this.nappy or permed they look GOOD!some of you women these days are just to complexed,either you want to stay permed to have the “white girl flow” or you want to stay natural cause “power to the afro” this silliness needs to stop!its not 1967!just let the kids be!but than again you are entitled to your opinion:)

I’m a quarter white and still have nappy hair. It doesn’t matter how much whit eyou have in you. If your genes decide you are going to to have nappy hair then that’s how it will be. I’ve seen people a quarter black with nappy hair.

My panties are not in a bunch! However, I do think to imply that someone is more or less black based on how they choose to wear their hair is such a narrow minded view. Sometimes straight hair is just more manageable. Beside, Isn’t it true that one of the things we as African Americans pride ourselves on is that fact that there is soo much variety among us, skin color and hair texture included?

It just warms my heart everytime I see the First Family doing something on the White House front lawn because it was NEVER been done before and even though they are the First Family they are still a FAMILY and I love to see them do NORMAL FAMILY THINGS like everyone all over the USA does!
The Obama’s are truly a Gift from God and I pray that God will continue to strengthen & PROTEST their UNITY as a FAMILY.

I feel that everyone should do whats best for you and your child. If you favor more of the straight look then a relaxer may be for you if the staightening comb or flat iron just wont work, or doesnt have as much of a lasting effect. If u choose to go natural than so be it, but everyone doesnt want to wear their hair like that. I see parents starting dreds in there daughters hair from babies. Those things lock up and when they get a certain age they may not want them. How do they get them out? They have to cut them out. This can be tramatic. Do what u can for your child hair while they are young. take care of it and love it. If they want it straighten so be it. The obama girls are beautiful, straightened or unstraightened hair. If it is straightened, maybe michelle felt that was best for her girls.

There are several ways to take locks out. If you look on youtube you can see tons of video footage. I was in shock when I saw it there. They really do put EVERYTHING on youtube lol.

Nappy what in the hell are you talking about? those kids do not have perms(relaxers). Have you ever heard of the hispanic blowout? I guess not. They have nice hair, so their hair can be blown straight and then straighten out with a flat iron. Omg, some peeps just so dumb.

OK, I could be wrong about the relaxers, but it looks relaxed to me. If it’s a blowout or straightening iron, whatever.
And I know what nappy hair looks like, and these kids have had unstraightened nappy hair before, especially if you see their younger pictures. And nappy just mean ‘natural hair that is wavy,kinky,texured, or curly.’ And I’m sure the girl’s natural hair is that.
But dang, yall ain’t gotta get your drawls into a bunch, G. I never said anything derogatory about their hair. I only said I was disappointed if it had been relaxed.

What is the big deal with relaxed hair. I wear my hair relaxed whats wrong with me? I wonder why people tend to try and force their beliefs down other people’s throats. You live your life with your nappy head and let Michelle live her life with her relaxed hair. I am so not feeling your desperate attempts at trying to be portrayed as a true African. Its truly upsetting that i have to write this comment in this day and age.

I admit I wasn’t sure about MICHELE’S hair before, whether she had weave or a wig or just straightened, but recently you can DEFINITELY see that she is wearing either a wig or something like that. I can see her saying ‘I’m too busy to sit in the chair all the time for several hours, just give me a wig!’ lol!
