UPCOMING:KIMBERLY ANYADIKE MAKES HISTORY

Wednesday, Jul 29 , 2009 1:29:pm by admin FILED UNDER Upcoming

kimberly15 year-old Kimberly Anyadike is the youngest African-American female to fly solo across the country. Anyadike made history by flying across country – logging 7,000 miles – from Compton to Newport News, Va., in 13 days.  Kimberly, who started flying at the age of twelve years old, was accompanied by legendary Tuskegee Airman, Levi Thornhill.

So how did Kimberly enjoy her flight?

“I got a rush whenever I took off, with my hands on the controls and throttle. But, I loved seeing everything,” Anyadike said. “When you’re on the ground you forget how beautiful the country is. I had to tell myself to soak in as much as possible.”

Kimberly said she flew because she “wanted to inspire other kids to really believe in themselves.” She also wanted to honor the Tuskegee Airmen, the U.S. Army Air Corps’ all-black combat unit that served during World War II.

“They left such a great legacy. I had big shoes to fill,” she said. “All they wanted to do was to be patriots for this country. They were told no, that they were stupid, that they didn’t have cognitive development to fly planes. They didn’t listen. They just did what they wanted to do.” Click Here to read more about this story

This is what I’m talking about. This makes me so proud. These are the stories I want to see on the news. Several years ago, there was another young man from Compton who flew to Canada as well. Black kids thinking outside the box knowing they can do anything they want, especially outside hip hop and sports. This is a good look. Congrats to this young sister for making us proud.

Congrats, Kimberly but I don’t know about flying, that’s not something that I could ever do. I’ll fly on a plane, but I wouldn’t fly a plane. Good luck and stay safe.

Who in their right mind would let a 15 year old fly across the country by herself? This girl isn’t even old enough to get a drivers license. I do not think that is safe at all.

She wanted to make history! How many people have flown an airplane across the country before they even learned how to drive or before they were old enough to obtain a learner’s permit?

Read the article again. She wasn’t alone; she was accompanied by an adult with flight experience, which is more supervision than a lot of licensed-to-drive 16 year olds receive on their first legal travel on the streets. Plus, she spent 3 years learning to fly. I don’t think Driver’s Ed lasts half that long.

uhm, it said she was accompanied by legendary Tuskegee Airman, Levi Thornhill. so technically she wasn’t completely alone. but i’m sure she did the majority, if not all, of the flying.

This is amazing even if she had an expert beside her, common it would be really inhumane to stick a child up in the sky alone. She is brave and she deserves every bit of praise she gets.
