PAPA, REGARDE UN CHIEN!

A tired-looking Nahla was spotted at the airport with her parents, actress Halle Berry and model Gabriel Aubry, yesterday.

In other news, it looks like 18-month-old Nahla can speak in her father’s native tongue: French. This past weekend, Nahla Aubry charmed workers at a beachside café by speaking in French, shouting: “Papa, regarde, un chien!” upon spotting a dog. Here is the story as told by a worker at the cafe:

“The little girl was pointing at the colourful drinks in the cooler and speaking French, like ‘Papa!’ and ‘Regard!’ I’m not sure what else she said, my French is poor, but she was talking a lot,” said a cashier at Malibu Kitchen, located in a shopping mall across the street from the family’s home.

As Aubry got Nahla a drink, the curly headed toddler heard a dog barking outside and ran to the door, the cashier added. “She was saying something about that too, and pointing. I asked her dad when he came back in to pay what she had said and he said, ‘Chien means dog in French. She said dog.’ ”

BCK Says: Tu parles anglais et français, Nahla? Bien! Ok, so BCK’s french is a little rusty. So how many of you have bilingual-speaking children?

It’s wonderful that Nahla’s first words are French. It’s a sign of intelligence, the fact that she may be bi-lingual! At least she’s not appearing to be autistic which her normally flat affect look in pictures might suggest.

This family looks like it needs to get more rest!

Why would you suggest that she is not appearing to be Autistic. As a mother of an Autistic son how does one appear to be autistic?

@Khrish…no harm or disrespect intended towards you or anyone who has a relative with autism. With an MFCC background, I’ve met and worked with young people afflicted with various degrees/forms of autism and in some they don’t manifest emotion as one would expect.

I’m not professing to be an authority and not alleging that Nahla has any such disorder. Although, any concerned parent may want to have their child evaluated if they suspect autism only in as much that the recent increase in the diagnosis for children is on the rise in this country. ( Nahla is still a bit too young to definitively diagnosis with the disorder.)

God knows that I think Nahla is cute and smart and God also knows I don’t want to stir up your wrath against me!

        • Khrish August 27, 2009 at 9:25 am

This is not at all about wrath. You spoke as if you saw something in the appearance of the child that maybe detected as Autism. Most of them (that I know)tend be identifiable by their actions. So I am just asking what you notice about this child’s appearance that would bring Autism to mind. That’s all. If I sounded offended, that was not my intent. This is more of a question requesting information.

It’s “Tu parles anglais et français, Nahla?”, but nice effort, BCK! My little cousin is being raised bilingual in French and Bosnian by his parents, and I think it’s great.
I’m almost bilingual in French and English, but my parents didn’t teach me, I learnt from school, then on my own, thanks to TV shows.
It’s nice that little Nahla is able to communicate with both parts of her family, congrats to Halle and Gabe!

Thank you, Halle NEEDS a hairstylist. I wonder why blk women are not complaining about Nahla’s WILD HAIR, but complain about Zahara’s hair. I pretty sure it has to do with Nahla having that “gudddd hair”

      Flag this

      • Khrish August 27, 2009 at 9:52 am

But Nahla’s hair isn’t wild. It’s just curly. There is nothing wrong with the other little girl’s hair. It just needs to be shaped and trimmed if she is going to wear it loose.

          • Khrish August 27, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Because it is in many different lengths and should be styled, braided or curled. The little girl’s hair just never even looks like they brush it. When Nahla is older, I feel quite certain that Halle will have shape and trim her hair as well because as she ages her hair will probably become thicker but right now she’s still a baby and her hair doesn’t appear to have the thickness to hole a shaped hairdo. What’s the big deal. Everyone has to deal with their hair in one way or another. I still wouldn’t put all those barettes in either of their hair simply because I think that most barettes just look tacky. I prefer hair ribbons.

I see blk women in this post want to play dumb acting like Nahala does not need anything done to her hair while Zahara ALWAYS needs something done to her hair. Blk women prefer the “good hair” so Nahala wild hair is okay. Chris ROck’s movie is going to expose blk women and their hair obsession. BLK women are in her making excuses for Nahals wild hair, but will NEVER defend Zahara wild hair.SMH

Khrish is the main blk woman on here in denial, talking about “zahara needs her hair trimmed” while Nahala does not. BLk women are stuck on the plantation

Amen! Some of the spelling requires decoding to understand. I’m quite certain that a lot of this is due to texting and Lord knows between the “rappers” and texting, we may soon be unable to spell at all. As well, the lack of internet etiquette such as typing in all caps. It gives the appearance that one is yelling.

I agree with your frustration around people who only type in caps! They want all of their comments to stand out and be emphasized for everyone to read instead of using caps to emphasize a specific point, etc.

She’s only going to be small enough to carry for a little bit longer, so why not carry her? Plus, that’s how babies thrive, through touch and love shown from parents.

With all due respect, “why is Nahla hair so curly?”–is this question for real?

I have a similar family background to Nahla’s and my hair was about 3, 4 times curlier than her’s when I was a kid. I had a regular ‘fro when I was 4 years old. In it’s natural state, air-dried out of the shower, it is obvious to everyone that though I may not look Black in my complexion, it’s MOST clear with my hair! :) To ask the question of why her hair is so curly, is to overlook the obvious: she is of AFRICAN descent and children of AFRICAN descent do not look one particular way. Some come out light with straighter hair, others come out darker with curlier/coarser hair, or some can be light with coarser hair (like myself), the list goes on. Again, with all due respect, but you list celebrity children of similar heritage to Nahla like it should mean anything at all. All that means is that people of African descent can range widely in their appearance. I would think that physical variety amongst us would not be a surprise TO us.

        OMG whats wrong with you!!
every child has nice hair it jus comes down to maintenance… Nahla is a baby her hair is fine and if they start pulling it it will probably break and she’ll end up with bald spots, and her hair is more caucasion (excuse my spelling) than black therefore all she needs is a brush and a wash now and then, im not too sure beacuse im a fully black woman, zahara is adopted by two white people who dont look like they know how to maintain her hair, they probably treat it just how they treat the rest of their childrens hair, and as black people we all know that hair grease and the hair being plaited or cornrowed (cornrowed especially in youg kids) can result in healthy hair, now if you think Nahla and zahara’s hair looks the same or that nahla looks like a boy….theres something clearly wrong with your screen.

Mia-I think it’s even more hilarious that you are referring to Zahara’s hair as “bad”. Some of the people posting here are so mean spirited and disrespectful. Who cares about how these BABIES are wearing their hair?! Are they happy? Are they healthy? Will they be upstanding citizens? These comments are the reason for little girls growing up with insecurities and low self esteem. Please BCK readers, consider the children before posting your negative comments.

I speak multiple languages fluently as well( Spanish, English, Italian, Arabic, German, and Mandarin). I think it is important for people in our society and in times today to at least know another language and to be able to communicate with someone who speaks another language as well. I grew up speaking english, spanish and italian and then learned thee other three by living in Morocco, Germany and China.

Could’ve sworn we were talking about bilingualism, how did we get on Nahla’s irrelevant hair and texture? Mia, if you have girls, you can pull and tug their hair whatever way you like, more power to you. Everyone else doesn’t have to follow your lead. You talk about Black women and their stereotypes- what about your own? Why does either Nahla or Zahara have to have their pulled/tugged/manipulated in bows/barrettes/whatever? Leni Klum/Shiloh’s hair don’t get mention at all, and all four kids wear their hair pretty much the same way. Think about it.

And I have learned to skip right over Jannie’s comments, she always sounds crazy. Just a suggestion.

I think it’s great that Gabe speaks French to her, that’s fantastic- many foreign parents don’t bother to teach their children their native language once they come here, which I think is a tragedy. My parents are Nigerian, but they never taught me their native language, we always spoke English. I really wish they had. I speak Spanish fluently now, and know some Japanese- both of which I learned on my own at school. But I always wished to learn my parents’ language.

I very much agree with you on the language. It seems that it’s so important to parents who immigrate here that their children fit in and they tend to overlook things that are really assets to their children. I get so tired of hearing people and seeing signs that DEMAND you speak English. (As IF ENGLISH is really spoken in America) It’s simply because many Americans are too lazy to learn another language, which I find just silly. I enjoyed hearing some Indian friends of mine say that they demand their children speak their language at home so they will not forget it, but they are free to speak English away from the home.

Yes, Khrish! Multilingualism is a major asset, especially in this society, and unfortunately foreigners get SUCH a hard time for just being foreign (even the English-speaking ones) that they try their very hardest to just fit in. I hate that, because America is founded by people from all different lands, it’s part of what makes this country unique. I think it’s why I studied language so hard, I was always jealous of my friends who could speak more than English, LOL. I hope they continue the French with Nahla.

If she looked this way all of the time, I’d be concerned. She looks like someone ticked her off or she’s sleepy. All kids look display this behavior from time to time.

Poor Baby. People act like she is on Cue. When ever they see a picture the poor child should be smiling or she’s unhappy. Buckwheat smiled all the time and he got woe for his smiles. You damned if you do and you damned if you don’t. She is just a baby people, not an actress…can you cut the child some slack.

Some of you people are sad… And you can take that any way you want. Anyhoo… I think Halle doesn’t want Nahla growing up thinking she has to look perfect all the time. She is still pretty fuzz hair and all. But I love ALL babies… dark skinned, light skinned and all colors in between. I think its awesome that Nahla knows English and French. I’m sure she talks with Halle in English and with Gabriel in French.

Bilinguality is not a big deal for kids.

I am fluent in five languages: English, French, Spanish Bahasa (Indonesia), Twi (Ghana)

and my Portuguese and Shona (Zimbawe) are pretty good too.

But I am not particularly intelligent, I am just fortunate to have bilingual parents, and moved around a lot when I was a child. I can remember moving to Indonesia aged four (after living in Ghana, England and Zimbabwe) and hearing people speaking words I didn’t understand…and all of a sudden (about 6 weeks according to my mum) I could understand what they were saying.

Children are like sponges, and it’s actually easier for them to learn languages than it is for adults!

You know.. I think it’s dumb how the focus in this particular thread seems to be about Nahlas hair.. Generally most kids go through infancy, grade school, and perhaps even middle school, with hair styles that don’t always look most desirable. Usuaully as a child gets older they began to customize their own hair into the style of their wanting. I mean how many people look at a picture of when they were a kid and say “Oh man I remember when my mom used to do my hair like that” or “Please don’t look at my pictures from grade school, I was a mess”.. Generally most people find that they are embarrased by their childhood hair styles.. Parents are’nt always willing to mess with their childrens hair that often, as long as their child is decently dressed, not hungary, not crying, and safe, that’s all any good parent really worries about.. I mean common some people may want to talk down this little girls hair style and texture but in all do respect her mother is an actress, and I doubt it if she remotely has time to worry about what any of those people think..

Nahla has a different texture hair to Zahara. Halle doesn’t need to do anything with her hair. Nahla so far is my favorite celebrity baby.
