JADA-PINKETT-SMITH PUTS HER FAMILY FIRST

Submitted by admin on September 1, 2009 at 10:34 am 37 Comments

willsmithfamFor actress Jada-Pinkett Smith, nothing comes before her family-not even her career.

“I’m a woman who does a lot of things, but I’ll put it all aside to be present with my family,” she reveals in the September issue of Good HouseKeeping. “Once you know what your priorities are, it’s all so much easier. Everything falls into place.”

And Jada certainly knows her priorities. For example, the working mom recently turned down a film role because of her son  Jaden, 11.

“The whole family is spending the summer in China, where Jaden’s shooting a remake of The Karate Kid. I was going to be in the film with him, but I decided that when he’s working, he needs Mommy — just Mommy, who gives the apples with the peanut butter.”

Though she always figures out “how to give [her family] what they need”, Jada also knows how to get what she wants.

“For instance, when I was considering the TV show, I sat my kids down and said, “There’s a project that Mommy wants to do. It’s going to be three months, and there might be days that I’m not going to be here when you wake up or when you go to bed. But then I might have two days off, and you can have Mommy all to yourself.”

“And their response was, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s cool, Ma!’ Willow said, ‘When you come home late, will you just come in my bedroom and give me a kiss?”

Her unbreakable mom rule: Respect. My kids are extremely respectful. You might not have to go to bed at a certain time, but do not talk crooked to anybody! Always treat people the way you want to be treated.

Her guilty pleasure: Pizza and french fries! I call it happy food.

Her  ideal family day: I love just being at home. We’ll go outside on the trampoline or the swing, take a nature walk, bake — 7-Up cake, red velvet cake, chocolate chip cookies. I love to bake — that’s the only thing I do. I don’t cook at all. I can’t. My mother didn’t cook; my grandmother couldn’t cook a lick!

Her love for husband Will Smith:”I never thought that I’d be married to anybody, and I surely never thought I’d be married to anybody as long as I’ve been married to him. And I plan on being married to him for the rest of my life. It’s been eye-opening how much the connection between my husband and me has deepened.”

I truly love and respect this family. I have always loved Will Smith as I see him as a perfect symbol of real manhood. He is truly a roll model for any young men outside of the family. Jada, I started to really like when she was on the cast of A DIFFERENT WORLD. This family never fails to make me smile. May they continue to be successful in all of their endeavors. I only wish that there were more like them in the media eye.

  • PlainMean says:

I wish they would write a book together! If these two divorced i’d lose hope in marriage, love Will and Jada.

  • Suitepuma says:

I love them but I hope to God that they aren’t swingers!

  • GEEKCHIC says:

Jada has come along way from Shame

  • InnocentCorruption203 says:

Awwww I remember when Jada was on A Different World, shes so cute! I love that she lets her children dress the way THEY want and that she started her own school for children.

  • shesallthat says:

i always wonder if they are as real as they always say they are or if it is all a front???

    • Khrish says:

Well if it’s not, at least they put up a good positive front. I think that Will is really into marriage. I know he told Barbara that he still didn’t want to divorce his first wife after their failed marriage. If she had stayed he wanted to repair the marriage. I loved Jada’s new show for the summer. I wish they would make it a permanent show as it is so positive. I have always loved the way he kept his oldest son so much a part of his second family. He just seems to be really serious about marriage. It doesn’t seem to be something that he takes lightly. I do so admire him and them both. Above anything else, he is a wonderful father and fantastic role model as a dad. May he always be blessed.

The show HawthoRNe has been picked up for a second season (ye!!!) I commend the Smiths for not trying to paint a rosy picture of their marriage and keeping it real. Jada will tell you quick: it’s work! and their relationship is not as ‘conventional’ [I'll leave it at that] as some would think but there’s no deception and both partners are aware of what’s going on. BTW: do yall see Willow hamming it up for the cameras?! Bayyyy Beee they better get ready I don’t think Will and Jada seen nothing yet those last two young’ns are going to bring it!

    • Toni says:

as much as jada talks about her family and relationship with will, i think its the real thing! lol

  • SuZSoPiSceS says:

Love this fam…LOVE the show Hawthorne.

  • Miznyc says:

awww I give my baby apples and peanut butter! :D

  • Sherley says:

I love Will Smith. I was never a big fan of Jayda. I don’t hate them but I don’t love them. I think they are putting up a great front. I wish them well but I don’t know, something about them makes me leery of them. I feel like they are pushing their children into films so they can be as successful as they are.

I didn’t care much for Hawthorne, it seems just like all the many other hospital drama shows on tv; nothing about it makes it stand out.

    • Khrish says:

Well it certainly presented a positive image, which is something that TV gives us very little of when it comes to our community. I can’t wait for these kind of shows to replace those ridiculous shows on TV now depicting such negative images of Black women.

    • Raquel says:

Umm I beg to differ. HawthoRNe is Executive produced by a Black woman and the shows star is a Black woman both being Ms. Jada Pinkett Smith that alone sets it apart from the other hospital shows and let’s not forget another twist: Jada’s character was married to a White man, she’s raising her bi-racial daughter with the interference and sometimes help of her successful and powerful White mother-in-law who gives it to nurse Hawthorne the same way Ms. Hawthorne likes to dish it out. Yep, that’s different to me. Loved it can’t wait for season 2.

  • ssmith says:

Definitely more than meets the eye - ask those who know them well. They will tell. It’s dirty but isn’t the world . . . especially hollywood - no morals to uphold anymore. Lord have mercy!

  • eliza says:

I think it’s kinda sad, here you have a loving, successful, supportive black family, something that people constantly complain there’s not enough of, and people are wondering if it’s all a front?

I’m sure the Smiths aren’t perfect, nobody is, but they’ve already said time and time again, the rumors about them are false, and IMO they’re not pushing or forcing their kids to be actors. Jada had said it’s an interest they have now, and if they never wanna do it again they don’t have to.

Anyway, love the Smiths and love HawthoRNe, I’m glad she signed on to the project, I’d missed her on TV. I hope they continue to support each other and keep “doing them”.

    • Khrish says:

Thank you for your comment. I agree with you. I guess when others are so use to not seeing loving families, they question when they do see one. No marriage is perfect. And no one has the right to know what is not perfect about it because it is their marriage. I love the way they are with their children and how the oldest son is always a part. They seem to be doing great in their life together and I am always happy to see them and read about them. For me, if it looks like a duck, waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck…..IT’S A DUCK! And that’s exactly the way this marrige fits. They make me happy just seeing them together.

    • InnocentCorruption203 says:

I concur, no matter what you do someone will always say something negative or question your motives.

    • Jas says:

Great point, Eliza. It’s really sad. I like reading about the Smiths, the Simmons, the Obamas and any other positive African American family. But like always the negativity has to creep in some way or another.

I’m just happy they continue to show that marriages do work…if you put the work in. And like someone else said…I love how they let their kids be themselves and express themselves.

  • Judd says:

The Smith Family, still together and good lookin like always.. I love this set of Brown People, LoL

  • Aliah says:

both the boys came out w/ nice hair… then theres willow

  • luvvieboo says:

YES THEIR MARRIAGE IS A FRONT, THEY TRY TO BE TO PERFECT. I CANT STAND WILL, ALL HE WANT IN HIS MOVIES ARE HISPANIC WOMEN. LIKE HIS WIFE AND DAUGHTER ISNT BLACK. WHERE IS TREY MOTHER? HAVE NEVA SEEN THEM TOGETHER. EVEN THOUGH JADA INVITES HER OVA FOR EVERY HOLIDAY AND SO ON, BECAUSE THEY ARE A FAMILY, YEA RIGHT. KNOW DAYUM WELL A SISTAH DONT PLAY THAT MESS. ALMOST FORGOT, HIS MOTHER IS HISPANIC TOO, JADA BETTA WATCH OUT. SUMTHIN ABOUT THEM THAT I CANT PUT MY FINGER ON. JADEN IS SO HANDSOME AND WILLOW IS FINALLY GROWING INTO HER LOOKS, SHE IS A CUTIE. TREY OUTGREW HIS LOOKS A LONG TIME AGO, LAWDY.

    • Khrish says:

Trey’s mother is married again and has a daughter. Now what? Why is it so hard for you to look at this family and accept the positive over the negative. Will gets who he thinks will do the best acting in his film. If you can remember, or if you knew, he wanted Halle Berry for his film with Kevin James, but she was not available. Is there something wrong with using Latinas in his film? Why don’t you applaud their family unit instead of trying to tear it down with rumor that you can’t validate. You’re right Jada had better watch out for haters like you. Some people!

    • Khrish says:

      Is your marriage working?
