CELEBRITY BABY NAMES EXPLAINED: WALKER NATHANIEL
Actor Taye Diggs has explained the meaning behind his son Walker Nathaniel Diggs’ name.
“I was reading Alice Walker and just loved the way the last name rang. We had a bunch of other names as well, but that one kind of won out,” the Private Practice star said on Monday.
The name “Walker” is usually a surname but Taye and his wife chose to use it as a first name:
Walker is an occupational surname for a fuller, or one who “walked” on raw, damp cloth in order to thicken it. It is derived from the Middle English walkcere, meaning “a fuller of cloth,” and the Old English wealcan, “to walk or tread.” Walker is the 28th most popular surname in the United States and the 15th most common in England.(Source)
Nathaniel is baby Walker’s middle name:
Nathaniel is pronounced na-THAN-yel and is of Hebrew origin; its meaning is “God has given”. Nathaniel has 15 variant forms: Nat, Natanael, Nataniel, Nate, Nathan, Nathanael, Nathaneal, Nathanial, Nathanyal, Nathanyel, Natty, Nethanel, Nethaniel, Nethanyel and Thaniel.(Source)

I actually love these two names! Especially the name, Nathaniel because in Hebrew it means “Gift of God”.
Walker is a name that was brought to North America from Northern England and Scotland independently by many different bearers in the 17th and 18th centuries. It means a “Fuller”.
A”Waulker” or a “fuller” was an occupation in Scotland involving the cleansing of cloth.
I really like the lettering and the blue blankey on this post of the two names.
Really cute! And I really mean it!

I don’t like the name Walker or Nathaniel. Nathaniel sounds old fashioned and I wouldn’t dare name my child Walker and nobody i know wouldn’t either.

wow, Alice Walker should feel so privileged as to have a child named after her…last name anyways. it’s a cool name. not one of my faves, but trust it’s a helluva lot better than some of these names these celebs are picking out the sky. and i do mean that literally, cause some of those names sound like they’re from another planet lol! Walker is nice and “normal”.

It would technically be Scott Diggs, Jr. Taye isn’t his real name.

It’s always good to know that people put in thought and meaning when naming a child. Having to carry that name for the rest of one’s life; it always feels so good to know what the thought was behind your name. I think many are going back to the old names or names with meaning instead of just making up meaningless stuff or selecting names from products.
