Plaxico Buress arrived to Manhattan Criminal Court for sentencing hearing today(September 22nd) with his son Elijah Burress, his pregnant wife Tiffany and his lawyer Benjamin Brafman .

Before the hearing began, Burress played with his preschool-age son, Elijah. Then he hugged and kissed his wife, child, father, grandmother and stepmother.

Burress was so soft-spoken during his apologetic courtroom address that onlookers could not understand him.

Defense lawyer Benjamin Brafton said, “This is a very real tragic case in many, many ways.” He called Burress “a fundamentally decent man.”(Source)

The former New York Giants star cried as the judge sentenced him to two years in jail for shooting himself and for criminal possession of a weapon at a club last year. “We will get through this,” Burress said to his family.

Plaxico and his wife Tiffany are expecting a baby girl this Thanksgiving.

He’s not leaving his family forever. Granted it was a little stupid but you’re making it seem as if he’s making a career out of crime and forgetting his family. It seems as if this guy is a loving family man and will return to them as soon as he i capable of doing so.

While I do think that it was wrong for Plaxico to have a loaded gun in his pocket at a nightclub, I think that a 2 year sentence is very steep.
Afterall, was’nt he punished enough when he accidently shot himself in the leg with that gun?
Wow….shot in the leg by his own hand with his own gun and still has to serve jail time because of it!
I feel for his family, especially his wife, little boy and the soon to be born baby girl.

I agree! It just goes to show that the Legal system still is against African American Males in the 21 Century ..I’m still waiting for the finance “big wigs” to get their sentences tooo.

This is not about the legal system against African Americans in this situation. The minimum penalty for carrying an unregistered loaded gun in the state of New York is 3 or 3 1/2 years. He’s getting 2 because of a plea deal he did. He’s getting what anyone else of a different race would recieve. Also, he carelessly dropped the gun and he could’ve hurt or even killed someone else because of his stupidity. This is a fitting crime for his stupid behavior.

Well Donte Stallworth got days for KILLING a man while he was DRUNK..so I do see this as vastly unfair. The justice systems varies on any given day in any given jurisdiction and that is not ok in my opinion. If he had shot someone else that would be a different story, but he didn’t. He shot himself, I think that’s punishment enough!

The Donte Stallworth situation further proves my point that its not about the Legal System versus African Americans. Donte Stallworth, dark skinned man, got a break and only had to serve 30 days, 2 years house arrest, and 8 years probation for taking a life. The Legal System IS all about jurisdiction. I couldn’t live in America if it weren’t. There’d be a lot of unhappy Americans unable to do the things they’d want. For Example: Gay Marriage. Only a few states legalize this. Also, i’ve committed a crime a few years ago and i only served 90 days where in the majority of the states i’d serve 3-10 years. So thank God it’s about jurisdiction. Plaxico should’ve read the laws of NY before he made his stupid decision of dropping his gun.

I am a HUGE Giants fan and I live in NYC. He is in jail not simply because he shot himself. He was supposedly injured and couldn’t play in a number of games last season. However, he found time to go from NJ to a club in NY with an unlicenced gun. The gun was in is pants and as it was slipping down he pulled the trigger while trying to grap it. His team mate drove him to the hospital then took the gun back to NJ. The doctor involved is supposed to report all gun related ER visits but she didn’t. She is now FIRED and may lose her licence. He is in jail because he carried an unlicenced gun into NYC. It is against the law period. The minimum jail time is 3 1/2 years. He plead because the grandjury indited him.
After the whole Diddy incident where someone was killed, NYC changed the law.
He has been fined by the Giants many times because he didn’t follow the team’s rules. The coach and the BLACK General Manager sat with him and tried to work with him. Dude would not listen! His wife has called the police to their home a number of times. She was filing for divorce a while back but changed her mind. Yeah the time sounds excessive but Plaxico is no angel. I fell sorry for the kids!

      • Khrish September 22, 2009 at 5:59 pm

Right he is not Angel, nor is anyone else we know. But the time was still excessive. He didn’t know the law and that is no excuse but he could have been given 6 months and a ton of community service with the children in the city. He had no priors and with all that was involved, I still think the sentence was excessive because the mayor got involved. He should get involves with some of the dirt that the politicians do and get them behind bars. While I don’t excuse the crime, I still say that his punishment could have involves things that were helpful to the community. These athletes have thrown their wives and girlfriends from windows and beat them unmericifully and they bearly get their hands slapped for it. The sentence is excessive. He broke the law but he is not a hard criminal. They just want to use what few Black men are out there to set examples and so they don’t care. If they can just get them on anything, that’ll do. Sentence: EXCESSIVE

Khrish while I agree with your points ignorance is not a defence. His gun was originally registered in Florida and he let the licence lap. He knew he was going into NYC with an unlicenced gun. Where in the country is it legal to carry a conceled, unlicenced gun? He knew he was wrong when he gave Antonio Pierce the gun and he went and hid it at his house.
The point that a lot of sports reporters have made is why would you go to a club that you don’t feel safe in. If you feel that you need to carry a gun don’t go to that location or stay home.
I told my football buddies BEFORE the mayor got involved that this brother was going to jail. I wish he got less time or even community service but the law is what it is. Dude had issues when he was in Pittsburgh as well. I wasn’t moved with his crying on Sports Center. I wish his wife the best because she must be going through a lot. Or she might be happy he’s gone for awhile because of the allegide domestic violence issues. Stupidity isn’t a crime but….

          • Khrish September 22, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Totally agree as I referenced above that ignorance is no excuse of the law; but you must agree that the sentence was extreme and I think it would have been anyway, except the Mayor made it worse in insisting on making him an example. Anyway, as you said, it is what it is and I do hope that he doesn’t have to serve all that time and that he learns from this mistake. Anyway!

I think everyone can agree that Plaxico’s actions were very stupid. But if you don’t agree that his punishment was excessive then you really should look at convictions in the state of New York based on unlicensed weapons. The majority of people who go to court for it get off with community service, MAYBE a few months of jail time, a fine, and possibly probation. Whether the court was being racist or just making an example of an athlete the punishment was unfair. Secondly, for anyone to say that ‘if you feel unsafe somewhere then don’t go’, that’s also not a very intelligent comment. Being in the spotlight of the media in anyway and going out at night is ALWAYS unsafe, there are always ppl to threaten you or even attack you because of who you are.
Lastly, NONE of you guys have the right to judge what kind of person he is. He knows what he did was dumb and he’s facing it. AND I KNOW FOR A FACT he never beat his wife! TIffany isn’t the typical wife of an athlete who can’t make her own way. She’s VERY independent and wouldn’t tolerate him even touching her roughly.

I agree with you Khrish. This sentencing is just over kill to make an example of this man so that the Mayor of New York can make himself look good politically.

I understand that New York has stiff gun laws and if you get caught you pay. Nothing happens in a vaccum.

Reports are that Plaxico was wearing sweat pants with the gun concealed in them loosely when the gun fell accidently out of the sweats and accidently shot him.

He wasn’t committing a crime against another person, although I guess it could be argued that someone could have accidentally gotten shot or killed in addition to himself.

The saddest part of this story to me is his little son watching him go off to jail for two years and his baby being born without him being able to be there for his wife and the newborn.

I think he’s pitiful and I feel sorry for him.

Dante Stalworth of the Cleveland Browns killed a man and didn’t receive such a stiff sentence.

Pisces & khrish I agree with most of your points.
To clarify a few things Plaxico said he was not wearing sweatpants but loose fitting black jeans. Jeans, sweatpants how about a holster.
Donte Stallworth sentence was light (30 days) but the brother is on house arrest for 2 years and his drivers licence is permantely taken away from him. He is suspended from the NFL indefinaetly. He also has to pay the family of the person he killed an undisclosed amount of money. The victim’s family are the ones who agreed to the time. I think there were some issues with the victim that the family didn’t want disclosed.
            It’s a shame!

I have to comment on this. I am still in shock that we can let drug dealers and murders get away with all this crime and here you have a man who shot himself in the leg, dropped from his team and you want this man to go to jail for 2 years. Meaning he is away from his son and unborn child, wifey and the rest of his family thrown in a cage like a dog all because he shot himself in the leg…Is that what your telling me…I just can not believe this…I am still in total shock over this one.

I think you’re being a little dramatic about this situation K. Plaxico doesn’t believe that he is a God hence the reason he carried a gun for his protection. And I’m not sure what stereotype you’re talking about that’s he perpetuating… Athletes feel unsafe in clubs? or Everyone makes bad judgement calls?

what kills me is who is threatening plaxico? patriot fans? the NFL provides you with armoured protection so stuff like this doesn not happen. yet this idiot felt the need to show off. i dont feel bad for stupidity

If she is white she is going to leave him, then divorce and take half of whatever money is left. If she is mixed then it will be a case of wait and see.

Why are you always sooo hostile and angry, Nikki? You’re always posting about the virtues of being mixed, as though that makes you superior to being either all Black or all White or whatever you’re “mixed” with.

The name of this site is BLACK (not mixed) Celebrity Kids. BCK features some mixed kids, but don’t get it twisted, it’s not a website just for you and your ilk.

If you are mixed with any Black, you come across as loathing that part of your heritage and, yes, I’ve noticed you posting the same self-promoting garbage all over this site.

You couldn’t care less about this man’s plight featured here, you just care about what people say about mixed people.

This is not a forum for you to vent your mean, racist attitudes, or for you to influence the opinion of others in any way.

Also, you should be the last person to quote the Bible or cite Rhianna’s case, because people who care about the treatment of women and/or call themselves Christian’s don’t call people the “C” word that you used to describe “What a travesty”. Most polite women NEVER call another woman a “c”…men traditionally use that word to degrade women.

Go find a site featuring mixed people if you don’t like what other races say here. I’m sure there must be some such sites out there.

And yeah, just like jumped into somebody else’s mix, I’m jumping into yours. I don’t know who you think you are!

Both Plaxico and Michael Vick were made examples to the rest of us. I feel sorry mostly for the children, of these men who made choices that gambled their family unit. and seeing the look on his face in one of the pics is very…
very… remorseful. He looks as if he is about to cry.

And who could blame him? He’s being taken away from his family… basically at his own hands….

But let’s just hope that he gets time off for good behavior. The jails/prison are already overcrowded.

    Keep ur head up Plaxico!!!!

I am sorry for this comment, but can someone please just dip his hands in water for me, we do not need lotion, but something. In all seriousness, I feel sorry for his family, and he looks like he is really sorry for what he has done. I do not know if this is true or not, but I read somewhere that he is probably going to serve only 10 months.

What is wrong with you people? A man brings a loaded gun to a public place and just because he was the only one that got hurt, he shouldn’t be punished? I am finding that there is this discrimination panic among blacks everywhere—when they don’t get what they want, it is because they are black. Think about this…how many white guys do you find packing glocks in their pants at nightclubs? Perhaps the answer to that will guide to the divine relevation that people bring the consequences on themselves! There are exceptions to every rule—that is understood. But stereotypes are there for a reason…they have a basis. He made a HUGE mistake and he needs to pay the consequences. He can’t get off easy because he was a football player or because he is black. End of story. All of you that have a problem with this—why don’t you tell all the black people that you know not to behave this way…and maybe the issues between races and inequality will be removed!

      @TK…

We don’t know or care about how many White men do blah, blah blah, as you say, because we all well know that White men have, can and do get away with murder, white collar crime, and anything else illegal in this (their) country.

Obviously you are either an Uncle Tom or a White Supremicist so you wouldn’t agree with most other posters.

      I’m X as in Malcolm X!

Get off your high-horses. Don’t be so reverse in your thinking that you believe he should serve less time because he is a black man. He is serving less than the 3.5 year minimum already. You think they are making an example out of this poor black man, but how often do you see a white guy packing a loaded glock in a night club? Good riddance…and hopefully his family can find someone who doesn’t need called on for domestic disturbances. He has had a few legal issues, and he is finally paying the consequences. If he is truly sorry for this, and he may be, then he will serve his time, learn his lesson, never do it again, and come home and love those close to him more than he ever did before.

everyone can have an opinion but i do think you need to learn the difference between domestic disturbance and domestic violence. what the media portrays isnt always the truth so plz dont draw on a mans character and love towards his wife because you dont even know all the facts. (dont mean to sound hostile but just stating how i feel)

What is the origin of the name Plaxico?
Is he any relation to Kandi Burruss (Escape, Atl Housewives) ?
It is very cool that his Dad was their since 70% of AfrAm homes have no father.

2yrs is bad but it coulda have been 3 1/2. Yes Donte Stallworth who killed a man got less bc he paid the family so they didnt press charges, & FL didnt have a tougher law on the books. After Puffy’s stupidity that got Shyne locked up NY changed their laws, so that is y Plaxico is going 2 jail.

Also, plaxico didnt have just a handgun, he had a LOADED SEMI AUTOMATIC gun. He coulda shot alot of ppl. I know he didnt but he coulda. 3 ppl were shot in the Puffy club incident & Shyne got a 10yr jail sentence. He got early release and will be out in 2 wks: 9 Oct 09, but then he has 3 yrs supervised probation.

    Good luck.

I can’t believe people are acting like he’s innocent! His lawyer saying he’s a decent man…. come on! he was carrying a gun in a nightclub. He accidentally shot himself, he could have accidentally shot someone else! He could have shot someone else on purpose, why else would you carry a gun?

He’s a criminal, the only I feel sorry for here are his children. Maybe his wife, but apparently she is choosing to stay with a criminal…

well, i think the sentencing he received is what he deserved. its getting really old. these are grown men they are suppose to be responsible and show their little ones the right way. not parading around with a dangerous weapon. i’m sick of these dumb celebrities, all the wealth they have and they want to waste it with nonsense. come on you guys, get it together. and the kid is cute, too bad his dumb father is going to miss 2 years of his life and the first day of school. GOOD JOB HERO! good way to start off!

Yes we do have strick gun laws in nyc, but I do know someone who only got a 1yr sentence for carrying a loaded weapon.. All of the above people who said he got his sentence for covering it up are very, very right…here’s the thing about the IGNORANCE .the word implies Your a dummie at something.. He wasn’t a dummy @ this he had a 1.previous license to carry the gun.. 2.involved others and tried to cover it up.. A Ignorant person would have just went to the E.R and got fixed up and went home like everything was okay.
I don’t believe skin played a role.. But maybe being a celebrity did..ie( Chris Brown’s sentence). And ooh to reply to. What a travesty.. he knew he was going away that’s why he had on the jeans.. And @NaiyaJ sweetie like I did he knew his sentence already.. It was ringing all across the board weeks ago..he took a deal.. Which is how we knew the sentence the system then has to formally( a judge) tell him.. You plead gulity…blah. Blah.blah. And your sentence is.. Blah blah blah. @ Camie what u said about the races is pretty much true…and Nikki I can see why you were affended but she wasn’t talking about your races per say.. She was more speaking of the temperment of the wifes as per the previous entertainment wives.. And lovely she was pretty much right.. If Kobe spent time in jail you think ms thing woulda been waiting for him???? But if she was black…. she woulda been visiting him every visit day and taking his girls to the jail to visit him too.. Black woman are known to be ride to die….. Had to get it all off my chest.

As a native new yorker and a giants fan I am disgusted by this. He shot Himself!! So ontop of him losing his job, dignity, and blowing a hole in his leg. They take this mans freedom for 2 yrs!!??? WTH?? Where’s the justice in that??

what a lot of you are forgetting this that one of Plaxico’s team mates was robbed and killed a few weeks before this incident. He probably had the gun for his own protection in light of what happened. Yes he made a horrible judgement call, but for a first time offence I think he could have gotten less time.

Well, I guess if Plaxico was Jewish and a sex offender then Bloomberg would not have made any comments. Unfortunately, Plaxico made a decison to carry a gun and he is paying the consequences. On the same note, his sentencing seems excessive. We need to vote in Novemenber so that Bloomberg would not be given another opportunity for Mayor and we certainly do not want him as governor. I would vote to Eliot Spitzer for governor than to have Bloomberg. Oh, what ever happended to Roger Clemens’ case. What a democratic mockery of this justice system. Why does the United States like others around the globe to laught at them?

@ Nikki, because i obviously offend you, i APOLOGIES.

HOWEVER i do live in free society and i am allowed freedom of speech and so are you (ie you feel that i was ignorant)that DOES NOT give you the right to call me or other people names.
I don’t think anyone here is trying to attack you, we are expressing our OPINIONS and you should really not take this so personally. Things are written on here all the time that we may not agree with but we don’t call people names.

I could say more but i really don’t want to drag this thing out, SO this is the last i’m going to say on this matter.

As a white woman, married (HAPPILY) to a beautiful black man, it offends me that someone on here is ASSuming if his wife was white, she’d leave him & take him for all he’s worth.. SERIOUSLY!?
I can PROMISE you, if my husband got into trouble, I’d be there for him for every bit of it. He’s my other half/my better half and that’s what you do in a MARRIAGE!!

It’s too bad, in 2009, people are still so hateful.. racist.. JUDGEMENTAL.. ASSuming.. and jealous maybe?? don’t know!
but I find myself coming to this site less & less.. I can’t stand ALL THE NEGATIVITY on here.. it’s sad!
It’s SUPPOSE to be a site about celebrity kids and I KNOW people are entitled to their own opinion, freedom of speech, etc..
    but still!!!

I’ll probably continue to check on this site cause I like seeing the kids..which i think is the purpose of this site.. and just sit back & LMAO @ all the pathetic comments on here!

I think you missed my whole point.. these people are human beings with feelings. and people just come on here & blah blah blah & mouth off about something they HAVE NO CLUE about.. People have NO IDEA what they are going through or have gone through together. and I think it’s ridiculous people have such opinions and make such rude comments about them, FROM A PICTURE! a SPLIT second of their life!

makes no sense. doesn’t resolve anything.. but some people THRIVE on negativity! NOT ME!
