Disney has released  another poster for their animated film, The Princess and the Frog, which will feature the first African-American princess. Here is a summation of the movie:

“A musical set in the legendary birthplace of jazz — New Orleans — The Princess and the Frog will introduce the newest Disney princess, Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose), a young African-American girl living amid the charming elegance and grandeur of the fabled French Quarter. From the heart of Louisiana’s mystical bayous and the banks of the mighty Mississippi comes an unforgettable tale of love, enchantment and discovery with a soulful singing crocodile, voodoo spells and Cajun charm at every turn.”

In addition to Anika Noni Rose (as Princess Tiana), the movie will also feature the voices of Oprah Winfrey, Keith David, Jim Cummings, John Goodman, Jenifer Lewis, Bruno Campos, Michael-Leon Wooley, Peter Bartlett and Terrence Howard. The film will debut in theaters in New York and LA on November 25th before expanding wide on December 11th.

That poster is too busy. I don’t know why they felt they had to include every single character from the movie in the poster. I hate skulls, too. The center picture with the princess and frog is really cute, though.

This poster is beautiful and I csn’t wait to take my nephew to see it. I love the ads that BCK has for Halloween already. The holidays are right around the corner and BCK is helping to set the mood! It’s all about the kids during this time of the year!

Thanks for all you do, BCK!

I am not too sure that I am oh so happy about this movie. I mean for most of the movie she will be a frog and why couldn’t they give her an African American prince. I mean don’t get me wrong it’s a good start but could be better. Either way I will take my daughter to see it!!!

Initially i was excited to hear that Anika Noni Rose would be the voice of Princess Tiana but after hearing it I think her voice sounds a lil *old* and kinda stereotypically Black…

    Anyone else notice this?

I am Black and do not have any children. However, if I did have any, they would not see this movie. I am happy that Disney decided to create a movie with a Black princess, but why did it have to have spiritually dark scenes that many people do not agree with. Why couldn’t it be more like Cinderella for a first Black Disney Movie. Why couldn’t the princess live in Africa and have other tribal people as her enemy and surrounded by the beauty of Africa. However, I am just praying that nothing spiritually bad jumps on people since there will be voodoo spells in the movie. I have heard that many times in movies that they are truly spells. The poster alone is not something that I would want to hang on my wall. However, this is only my opinion.

    • dree September 25, 2009 at 12:29 am

there are so many misconceptions about “voodoo”, the reason why it is a major concept in the movie is because it’s truly apart of the New Orlean culture, people don’t understand it like they don’t understand why Muslim women wear the Hajib.

don’t get me wrong, Disney has been known for it’s inaccuracies but it is a kid movie.

Has anyone actually seen the preview?? As much as I would love to support a movie featuring Disney’s first black princess, I couldn’t help but notice the stereotypical nature of it all: the voodoo magician, the slick-talking frog prince with the sexual deviant undertones, the “Mammy” voodoo priestess (again with the voodoo) who serves as the fairy godmother, the manic jazz singing alligator, the unintelligible Jar Jar Binks-esque firefly….it’s disgusting. That alone is enough to keep me away from the theatres.

Aside from that, along with Spiritual Aspect, I agree that there are spiritual ramifications to consider. As a Christian, you have NO business exposing yourself and especially your children to this mess. Voodoo is real, it’s DEMONIC and should not be entertained. Period.

      Dee Dee,

I didn’t understand it like you have broken it down, but you are absolutely right. I am a Christian, and my Bible tells me that our life on Earth is based on a spiritual war. The poster alone allowed me to know that this is not a movie that I would want to expose my children to, if I had any–a poster that shows images that are contrary to the Bible is enough to keep a true Christian away. However, I appreciate you breaking it all the way down for those Christians who may think that it is no big deal. I believe that only Christians will understand my point, because Satan will utilize whatever to lead people away, and that includes children films.

Why are Christians so delicate and so likely to be influenced by or fall into things that are not christian. As I remember, Christ went into all these places and among all kinds of people and it didn’t change anything he felt. I would be upset if my religion was so shaky that I would be afraid to partake of anything that isn’t pure. With what I have seen in some of the churches you should be able to go any place and do anything and not be in any more danger of sin. I’m afraid that our country is going to fall apart from all these religious folk……that usually only want to tell everybody else what to do and how to like their lives…….supposedly in the name of God.

          Khrish,

In my opinion, the person whose religion is delicate is yours. I notice that those of us who are not going to see the film has not become annoyed with those who are going to see it and called them names. Obviously, you do not study and mediate on the Word of Yahweh (God), because if you did, you would have known that Yahshua (Jesus) did not entertain sinful people or behaviors, but tried to change them. I do not think that you will be going to see the Princess and the Frog in order to witness to people. It is not about having fear, it is about spirituality. Therefore, if you do not understand that, then you should go back and study the Bible and let it interpret itself not you.

Remember, you said you didn’t have children, hence making it difficult for you to see things from a child’s point of view. I heard this same stuff during the time that the Harry Potter films were released. Even adult christians adding their sightings to the little TeleTubies. It’s just crazy talk. It’s like you, yourself, believe in princesses and fairies and all the other make believe things. All they do is tear down everything. If you don’t intend to see the film, then don’t see it. Don’t start giving religious education to everyone else.

If one can become more spiritually rooted and changed into the image of Yahweh by beholding those things that pertain to Him, then we can definitely be changed into the image of satan, which he is a spirit, by beholding those things that pertain to him. However, if a person who claims to be a christian and study the Word of Yahweh does not understand the importance of not beholding movies that will glorify evil behaviors, which means, the movie does not allow people to understand that voodoo spells are wrong no matter why it is used, then one can assume that the individual has been changed and does not see anything wrong with going to watch a movie that has these type of evil scenes. I do not think that there will be scenes that show that praying to Yahweh can remove the evil spell in order to allow viewers to know that Yahweh is all powerful and can destroy wickedness and evil intentions. Therefore, if this movie did have such scenes that showed how Yahweh’s power is greater than the power of those who cast voodoo spells, then I believe that is a movie that a TRUE Christian can behold; however, I know that this is not the case with this movie. Therefore, if a Christian believe that nothing is wrong with beholding movies like these, as well as their children, then, that Christian has been CHANGED in a NEGATIVE manner according to the Bible. Therefore, once a TRUE christian discovers this about one who CLAIMS to be a christian, then the TRUE christian does not have to keep responding to the one who CLAIMS to be a christian, since the TRUE christian realizes why the one who CLAIMS to be a christian thinks that movies like these are fine–the Bible has given the TRUE christian his or her answer.

            2 Corinthians 3

17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (emancipation from bondage, freedom).

18 And all of us, as with unveiled face, [because we] continued to behold [in the Word of God] as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are constantly being transfigured into His very own image in ever increasing splendor and from one degree of glory to another; [for this comes] from the Lord [Who is] the Spirit.

@Spiritual Aspect, well whether you were addressing me or not, I’m addressing you. A real Christian wouldn’t advise me to “Go find myself” which you used as a more polite way to tell me to go f*** myself.

A Christian would take the time to guide me and help me and bless me. American Christians are taught to be loving and tolerant, which you obviously are not unless people agree with you.

I hope you go find some psychiatric help for yourself because you are apparently using BCK to cry out for attention and help.

When I said I agreed, that was to Khrish’s comment. “Spiritual Aspect” is obviously a nut case. The name should be “Sinister Aspect”.

“Spiritual Aspect” is a fanatic and seems like a person who may be schizophrenic and can be found yelling out Bible verses in front of a public library in any major city in America after using a free computer in the library to write maniacal messages to BCK.

If “Spiritual Aspect” is not obsessing or fixating on the Bible, I’ll bet it’s about space and receiving messages through an aluminum foil antennae on his/her head, or some other cult related topic.

This is just about a cartoon and not damning people to hell. Like Khrish said, go make your own movie if you can.

Go and find yourself, because I was obviously not responding to you. I would have put your name at the top–I was making a statement. I know that you feel like you are that important, but unfortunately, not to me. People talked about Yahshua (Jesus) for following the Word of Yahweh and thought that He was crazy, as a matter of fact, many thought that He was satan. Therefore, I feel that it is a honor when I am quoting the Word of Yahweh, and obeying the Bible that people like you call me crazy, because I may sit around quoting scriptures according to you–Therefore, I know that I am now truly a Christian. Thanks for the confirmation, I am doing my job.

SPIRITUAL ASPECT: I don’t think that Disney was into spewing religion in this film. All of the Princesses that are used in Disney film have some bad force to them and they usually overcome that bad force. But I don’t think that the teaching of religion was meant to be the subject of this film. I bet BCK won’t ever ask again for this community to judge a film poster.

Disney could have did much better than this. I’m happy that we are finally getting an African-American princess but I can’t get with the stereotypical characters in this movie. The voodoo is way too much. and yes the princess spends a majority of her time as an frog. And I agree that it does look spooky and dark. And the poster is not something that I want hanging in my 9 year old daughters room.

I have my own reasons to be wary of Disney doing a film with a black main character, but voodoo elements are the very least of my concerns. Look at their other princess films:

    Snow White – Witchcraft
    Sleeping Beauty – Witchcraft
    The Little Mermaid – Witchcraft
Beauty and the Beast – Not quite a princess film, but you get my drift.

These have been merchandised to the hilt to young girls since I was knee high, and I don’t recall hearing or reading any uproar about exposing precious minds to evil influences. Is witchcraft any less evil and malicious than voodoo?

If you’re going to boycott one for occult references and practises, you better boycott them all.

But to those concerned about darkness and spirits- um, MOST Disney movies have WITCHES, FAIRIES, SORCERERS, EVIL SPELLS and so on.
Please, all of a sudden THIS is too dark, but Snow White isnt? Aladdin isnt? Beuaty and the Beast isn’t? ALL of these involve magic and evil. Sheesh

I don’t like the poster. It looks creepy. I won’t watch this because I don’t care for the majority of with Disney films because they are trash, always with the sexual innuendo.
I dislike the stereotypes portrayed in this film’s preview and am saddened by the people who feel that Disney is doing Black/AA people a favor by having a Black/AA princess. If it has to be this way then don’t do me any favors!
This akin to the slave masters gave the slaves feces filled pig intestines to eat and the slaves decided they were “lucky” to get that and decided dig out the feces, season the pigs innards name them “chitterlings/chitlins” and eat up. Now centuries later that particular form of slavery is no more and there are many healthy, feces free food options yet the slaves’ descendants have decided to continue to dress the innards with hot sauce and couple them with greens and cornbread to enjoy. Never minding the ill effects to ones health from indulging in such. Sadly, many of the descendants are still eating the garbage the slave master tossed their ancestors. Me… I’d starve first.

I don’t see what eating chitterlings has to do with this Disney movie. Asian and White people (in particular Whites from the Southern region of America) eat chitterlings today as they probably did along with their slaves in the past.

I don’t know what your ethnicity is or if you’re just joking around about this topic, but you sound archaic and as though you are a fraud.

That’s how I know that you are a hypocrite and fraud wasting space typing here!

Also, chitterlings are sold in White markets all over the country and are obviously FDA approved just like bacon, tripe, tongue, kidneys and other sweetbreads. You need to learn to research and read yourself, hypocrite!

I sometimes believe that they are more taken with “THE DEVIL” than with God or the other name she chooses to use. To me “a rose by any other name is still “a rose”.

I was really offended by the movie. Why did the characters have to use ebonics? I mean I know that certain people from Louisiana use a certain dialect but they didn’t have to go all the way like that–you couldn’t hardly understand what some of the characters were saying. Look at the toothless lightning bug and let me know what you think!Don’t even get me started on the voodoo thing!!

Other than those components–Tiana was inspired to live her dreams no matter what and work hard to get there!
