CELEBRITY BABY NAMES EXPLAINED: ALIJAH

alijah

The bible is perhaps one of the world’s largest resource for baby names. It therefore comes as no surprise that new parents Alonzo Mourning and his wife Tracy chose to name their newborn baby boy after a biblical figure.  The newest Mourning’s  name is Alijah Harden Mourning, with the first name pronounced as “ Elijah”.The family chose to have a modern respelling of the name Elijah because they wanted a name that began with an “A” so  that Alonzo and his two sons  would all carry the initials of “A.H.M.”

The name Alijah is a modern respelling of the more common Hebrew name Elijah. Elijah, which means “The Lord is my God”, is a common name for boys. Elijah was one of the greatest prophets of the Old Testament. He prophesied during the reign of Ahab. Elijah performed many miracles including restoring a widow’s dead son to life. (Source)

Other Celebrity Kid(s) with the name Alijah:

Alijah Kai, daughter of actress Tichina Arnold.

Elijah or Alijah…I don’t care how it’s pronounced, I still love the name!

    BCK: FYI –

Alijah is derived from Elijah which means “”My God is Yahweh”, “I whose god is Yahweh”. Yahweh being a form of the name Jehovah — the actual name of the Almighty Creator. Notice in the name Alijah … the J A H

There are many Hebrew/christian terms that invoke the name of the Sovereign Lord of the Universe. Example, the term ‘Halleujah’ literally means ‘praise Jah’ or praise Jehovah.

when you change a spelling of a name (especially a biblical name)you also change the meaning.

It’s a nice variation of the name and i do like it, but i don’t think it has the same meaning has the scripture.

That must be a mistake because all Christian and readers of the Bible are not English speaking, therefore the Bible has been written in many different languages. And it was not originally written in English. Maybe you should research that again.

I love the name Elijah but I have to admit, I prefer the original spelling. Other Biblical names I’ve always thought beautiful are Gabriel (I would name a son of mine that, if I ever married), Ruth, David, Joseph (which was incidentally, my grandfather’s name), Naomi, and Joshua. :)

I would tend to think that there was something about the meaning of the name or something they liked about that particular character in the bible. That’s the reason they chose the name. Like many people choose to name their “first son” Adam, since they think of Adam as the first man. It has nothing to do with being stupid. How old are you?

I love the name elijah/alijah! I have 5 daughters and is expecting my first son! All of my childrens names names begin with an “A”, so his name will be Alijah! And the lord is my God for sure! So my son should be honored to carry a name with such a meaning!
