During the event, the president spoke to a crowd of students and encouraged them to “reach for the stars.”

“If they(referring to two young people who had discovered rare cosmic events) can discover something great, so can any of you other students here tonight. All you need is a passion for science,” President Obama said. “There are a lot of mysteries left and a lot of problems for you students to solve,” he added. “That is why we are working to reinvigorate math and science in schools.(Source)

The Obamas!!!!!! favorite family of all time.

  • mel says:

Congrats to our President on winning the Nobel Peace prize!

  • SASSYKITKITTY says:

Congratulations to the Obama family.Well deserving of this recognition. For a man as well as his family, who wears the world problems and burdens on their shoulders and still be able to stand tall, takes a strong family to pull that off.I have nothing but love for this great family. So many are looking to see this great man fall as president of the USA but God won’t allow it.No weapons form against Barack Obama shall prosper, Believe that!!!

  • tia says:

wait I like obama but honestly people what has he done to win this prize?

    • Khrish says:

He has shown the world that all of America does not believe that cowboy politics is the most effective mode for world peace. He is a man who travelled abroad and was lauded by thousands for his “AUDACITY” to campaign and win the presidency of a country that had never even thought about electing a man of color as their Commander and Chief. He is showing a picture to the world of the real America by speaking to and selecting for his cabinet and including the very essence of America, not just those who are in the majority. He speaks of a world that we all want as a place to call home. Where we can sit down and discuss our problems with all people, not just the selected few, to come up with solutions that can offer us all a better world in which to live. He is concerned about the well being of all Americans; rich and poor. He cares about education and providing a better system where our children can gain the knowledge to once again compete in this world. In other words, like Bobby Kennedy; “He dreams things that never were and asks, why not”. And shows up everyday, under threats of assassination, to work to make these things reality. That is why I feel that he deserves this Nobel Award……which gives him, as he said, A Call to action.

      • tia says:

excuse me he has been all talk and has not done anything if any former president deserves this award it is Clinton. Obama does not yet deserve to be put into a category like Nelson Madella who has also won this award.

If we gave this ward to everyone who talked about doing better things everytone would have it.

        • Khrish says:

Well obviously there are more people in the world who don’t agree with you. Right? And incase you have not bothered to inform yourself, the Nobel is not always awarded to those on what they have already done but to those who have projected ideals and vision of what is needed. I hope you were this vocal when “W” put us into Iraq. Once again, the whole world is in awe with the American President except America herself. I get so sick of people in this country who haven’t done crap and don’t even know how to initiate crap always criticising people who do take steps forward. What have you done for the world lately, except only follow the headlines in the new media. Again, Bravo Mr. President.

      • tia says:

also obama thanks for pulling our troops out like you said…

Wait never mind he didn’t they are just going to afghanistan an unwinnable war..

I would like to see my mom come back from the war but the way obama is going she wont.

        • Khrish says:

As one who is opposed to this war, I, too, hope that your mother comes back to you for good very soon. And my hope is that this thing in Afgh. will be over. But in all honesty, you are expecting the President to just snatch this people out suddenly leaving them in harm’s way. It’s not fast enough for me either; but I know that it has to have process to secure the safe removal of our people. So, it’s not quite fair of you, even though I can understand you pain, to shift this total blame to President Obama. I hate war. Let’s hope that President Obama will be the one to take your mother out of harm’s way and bring her safely and well back home to you. While that probably gives you know solance, please know that I hate this situation too. God Bless you.

    • BB says:

Obama was a community activist and senator before he became President, that aside…

I will also say this, he has shaken up the way people view race, view partisan politics, view the U.S. The image of our country on the world stage has been deeply and negatively impacted by the former Bush Administration and as the world is continuing to “shrink” Obama realizes the importance of repairing our image, building bridges and alliances. There is already a sense that many world leaders are willing to “come back to the table” and forge ahead, not always agreeing but at least sit down together and dialogue and come to a consensus on certain imperatives of importance in the global community.

That said, he will have to make sense of and ferret out the real global threats that are out their too and he is just grounded enough I believe–without the John Wayne, good ol’ boy harbadash –to be able to deal with the grey areas, make the tough decisions and act in a measured way.

Rome wasn’t built in a day. It is going to unfortunately take some time to dig out of some of the serious issues the U.S. is facing that have been years in the making.

I truly never thought I would see the day when the U.S. with its painful and shameful history of racism, come together to vote their conscience into office. He didn’t do anything?–but help helm this miracle….

He has facillitated the type of inspiration, hope and promise like no other head of state before him, IMO.

Yes, he has his work cut out. He has to do more of course to truly live up to the shining promise he represents. He is but a man, not God—but what a lightening rod he has been, is, and hopefull continue to be –his influence has been profound and far reaching.

I have never been so proud of this country. My country.

  • Zee says:

This is wonderful news to start the weekend off with! I can’t see this going to a more deserving man, though the rethuglicans are prob fuming that our president has been given a world-renowned honor. Congrats, Mr. Prez.!!! :-)

  • cathy says:

i like the Obamas but like someone said what has he done to deserve such a prestigious award?there are more deserving people of this award, this wasn’t the time for him to win it.congrats to him,but it’s so undeserving at the moment, there are lots of people who deserve it,it’s just not him,he’s not a bad President, but he hasn’t proven himself just yet……

    • Pisces says:

Who should get the Peace prize instead of Mr. Obama? Who are these more deserving people that should have gotten the honor instead of the President and what have they done? What is the criteria for their winning?

      • hello says:

I can think of one person Bill CLinton with his charity work and his past achievements.

        • Khrish says:

Obviously, the committee, who is not built of a bunch of “dummies” don’t agree with you. You see the results of their choice, but do you know the criteria? I don’t see this as an “American Idol” competition. There are some who would suggest that anyone or anything would be a better choice than President Obama, simply because they have never even cared or followed the winners of the award and because they dislike him that much. I always think of this site as a part of the younger people of the world who are the more progressive and positive of the world. Those who want to CHANGE the negatives of the world making it a better place for its ciizens. I do realize, however, that there the old heads like me who also come to the site, who share that same vision. The vision that President Obama projects. Those who are willing to get out there on each and every occasion to cast a vote even in off year elections to keep things going in the direction of progress. You know they depend on changing everything back by betting that the young and minorities stay at home on off year elections and post about what they like and don’t like without putting forth the effort to enforce their positions by voting.

        • Pisces says:

Well, some people thought Bill Clinton’s wife should have won the the Democratic nomination for President but that didn’t go to that family either? Should we forget about Clinton’s impeachment, Monica Lewinsky and White Water?

Maybe that’s why Bill Clinton wasn’t considered for the Nobel Peace prize. He wasn’t a President who was very “noble” towards his spouse and other females. Hello?

        • Pisces says:

Umm..two words why Clinton did not win the Nobel Peace Prize..Monica Lewensky! Hello!? I forgot another word, IMPEACHMENT during his stay in office. Not noble at all! Duhhh.. Hello!?

          • hello says:

That may have not been noble but leaving his presidency with a surplus all the money his charity has brought in and donated the work he has done in Africa and around the world is very noble. Everyone makes mistakes but he got the job done as president and continues to get the job done.

          • Khrish says:

Democrats as a group tend to clean up and leave the budget in better shape than repubs. However, what was left as the result of doing a wonderful job with our American budget has nothing to do with the criteria for the Nobel Peace Prize. duh!

    • Khrish says:

Cathy, you heard someone else say! Have you followed along everyday and read, watched the things that have been done or projected by this President yourself? Don’t depend on what others say, follow the issues and the projections for yourself and form your own opinions based on what you have learned and seen. You will find many who will object to anything done or projected by this President. So you have to be able to speak on what YOU KNOW and see.

  • EMMY Fan says:

    I love the First Family.

  • c says:

I think he should give it back, He has been in office nine month and has really done anything but win. Plus we are involved in 2 war. It to soon he so thank everyone and decline it because if he doesnt he will look bad in alot of people eyes.

    • lee says:

To the people who don’t understand why he received the award. Obama was a Senator before he was a President. It is not just 9 months. Damn it!

      • Khrish says:

Thank you Lee. It amazes me how people who are only concerned with trivialities have time to only read the headlines can pretend that they know what criteria is involved in this award. it seems that if people would stop just reading the headlines and follow this administration and foreign policy on a day to day basis they could have a better idea of what is going on in the world. Once again, America enables its citizens, out of their own incuriousness to EAT THEIR OWN without inspecting the contents of the meal!

    • Khrish says:

C you don’t give back or turn down the Nobel Peace Prize. Is this your first experience with awareness of this award?

  • Chalover says:

I’ve lost a little respect for the Nobel Peace Prize commitee now that they’ve given these award to Obama. I’m by no means a Obama-hater but seriously, he hasn’t done anything to deserve such recognition. It’s too early in the day to be giving him awards, people!!! The world(and America) needs results and concrete actions. Great speeches are inspiring and all but that’s all it is. What change has be brought about to be truly deserving of this honrorable prize?

  • Pisces says:

President Obama deserves the Nobel Peace prize just for having the courage and selflessness to step into the office of the Presidency of the United States in this historically, and obviously presently, racist country.

Reform does not happen over night and as a U.S. Senator he made many contributions to his country.

Kudos to President Obama, and I pray he survives his whole term in the Presidency. We live in such a schizophrenic, hostile place.

And it’s so sad to know that many of the female gender, the so-called “kinder, gentler” of the human species are so non supportive of our leader and spew hate against him and his efforts.

  • BCKay says:

    Congrats, Pres. Obama.

  • Klassy says:

Congrats to our President for what he has done and what he will be doing for all of mankind in the future.

  • cathy says:

he deserve the award for being the first African-American president?wow, the Nobel Peace Prize has never been awarded to anyone based on what they said they were gonna do.No one is anti-Obama,it’s just wasn’t his time to win.and for people asking who are the more deserving people for this award, there are many, women in muslims country who lose their lives trying to gain the same freedom and rights that we all enjoy in the U.S,Don Cheadle and Matt Damon for all their work in Africa and their stand against what’s happening in Sudan, how about Angie who always brings awareness to third world countries?or Bill Gate whose work is known all around the world, and his foundations too,to better the lives of others,go anywhere in Africa, they would tell you about Bill Gate, and i’ve been in Europe and Africa many times,Obama haven’t changed the way they feel about America at all(if he did it was during his win)but that’s all.like i said there are many people in Africa and around the world who make a difference and aren’t recognize but it’s not Obama’s fault,it’s the Nobel commitee’s fault, but to say he deserve the award…really?not in my book, but now that he has it,he better show the world that he deserve it….

    • Khrish says:

Well I live in America and I am proud that America and President Obama was the one chosen to receive this award because he deserves it and it calls, as he said himself, to step up to the plate and show that he will work to bring this world forward in the its ways. To promote a better educational system for this country to make our children able to compete on the world stage. To bring all nations into the playing field instead of the selective few. When Dr.King was awarded the Nobel, he didn’t solve the problems of segregation in this country, but he stepped forward and worked to initiate the change that continues to go forward in this nation, the fight against illegal wars that send our men and women into harm’s way that have nothing to do with the safety of our country. Sadat did not bring peace to the Middle East but with all things in the Middle East and his Egyptian countrymen so fiercely against his sitting down with President Carter and the Israeli leader, he at least, tried to bring some sense of dialogue to ease the problems of the Middle East resulting in his assassination. These were all Nobel Peace Prize winners.

    • Pisces says:

You wrote a book? Has it won a prize? Well at least you get an “A” for doing something! (You said “in my book”).

  • Khrish says:

When Alfred Nobel died on December 10, 1896, it was discovered that he had left a will, dated November 27, 1895, according to which most of his vast wealth was to be used for five prizes, including one for peace. The prize for peace was to be awarded to the person who “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding of peace congresses.” The prize was to be awarded “by a committee of five persons to be elected by the Norwegian Storting.”

President Obama has begun the process of the things embodied in this criteria.

    • Pisces says:

Thank you Khrish. Beautiful. This should squash the Obama haters who blog , but it won’t. I’m sure “Hello” here will still see Clinton as more deserving although the administration after Clinton soon wiped out any “surplus” in the economy and Obama inherited all of Bushs’ and Clinton’s illegal and bad choices for the nation.

Clinton did not do half as much toward the criteria to win the Nobel Peace prize during his administration as President Obama has achieved so far in his administration toward negotiating world peace.

Mr. and Mrs. Clinton both did a lot for their own bank accounts, though, before they left. They left with way more personal income than they came in with as well as negative publicity, and continue to ride the tails of the Democratic party and the Obama administration for their own personal gain.

I’m so glad that Obama hasn’t brought alot of “baggage” into the White House with him and hope that he can leave the same way.

      • Khrish says:

There was some idiot on THE VIEW this morning who said that she and the members of THE VIEW agreed that the President didn’t deserve this award and Whoopi, Joy and Barbara, told her no we don’t agree with you and the audience booed her. Good for them. I have never seen so many people who feel that the President, in 9 months has to fulfill ALL the promises he made during his campaign RIGHT NOW. I said when I voted, unlike the Palin supporters who liked her because she was like them, I want someone who is way smarter than I to become president, and I consider myself pretty dang smart. I am enthusiastic about this President and watching and reading everything I can get my hands on to see the what and why of his decisions. It keeps me excited and aware as well as his foreign policy. I collect all the pictures and I have been so excited about the number of Native Americans that have already visited and received awards from this White House. I loved the Native Americans in the Inauguration Parade with all the headdress and everything on the horses. I brought me to tears.

        • Pisces says:

I appreciate all of your knowledge that you share, Khrish. I guess it’s the American way to have opposing views but it still is just so sad to see how racism is still so prevalent.

I love when the Native Americans get the respect they so deserve and how great that you noted it on Columbus (Indigenous People) Day.

Have a great day, Khrish. Vive la Obama! :)

          • Khrish says:

Pisces, did you hear the takeoff that George Lopez did on his comedy special for HBO? He said that he is sick and tired of hearing people in this country telling so called “illegal immigrants” to go home. He said that the Mexicans will go home after the first “illegal immigrants” go back to Europe. The Mexicans will even rebuild the Mayflower for them and they can do that with some nails and a shoe. I laughed till my stomach ached. Cause I have stare in awe when I hear those right wing nuts yelling “We want our country back”. What the heck do they mean? I haven’t seen one of them with a feather headdress, have you?

  • cathy says:

wow…i guess when someone doesn’t agree with your views, they are either racists or haters?i don’t understand why you act like people hate the president, and who said that Clinton deserve the Nobel Peace Prize?i didn’t write a book so i don’t need your ‘A’ for anything pisces.it’s very sad that we are in a country, where you have to agree with people or being called racist, this is not about race or anything and like i said i’m sure Obama would achieve many things but this wasn’t the time to award him the Peace prize.he won and now he has to prove to many that it wasn’t a fluke.

  • InnocentCorruption203 says:

I’m all for Obama I think they have a great family and that he CAN accomplish something great for our country. But give the man a chance to do “something”. He hasn’t even been president for 1 year and we are giving him the Nobel Peace Prize. Yes he is a wonderful thinker and a man of great ideas but atleast give him the chance to act. I’m not saying that his actions aren’t and won’t be valid and of great change. I’m just saying its going to take a LONGGGGGGGGGG time to undue all the drama and horrible acts that we have and are currently facing.

Sometimes I really hope their family dosen’t get caught up in all this media attention, which ANY normal human can fall victim. I don’t remember EVER seeing paparazzi pics of G.W. Bush on vacation or remember anyone’s critic on how his wife looks. I mean this is the president of the country and he is commenting on Kanye West on the mtv awards? Yes he is a very attractive man with a beautiful family but lets not forget he is very INTELLIGENT and in one our highest position of power. We as american make EVERYONE a celeb but maybe we should focus less on his marriage and more on the issues. No offense intended just my personal opinion =)

    • Khrish says:

No pictures of Bush because he didn’t want people to see him having a good time after he had sent Americans into harm’s way on a lie that they concocted. Remember he gave up golf because of that, although the press did get pictures of him playing. LOL I remember seeing many, many pictures of President John Kennedy and his family as well as the Reagans, but you maybe too young to remember those.

  • Khrish says:

Here is what they said in announcing the award today:

‘Obama,as President, has created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama’s initiative.

    See?

They told us WHY…but the American press is too busy HATING on the Presidency to acknowledge or report on that very clear TRUTH.

Too busy spinning the situation into a partisian conflict and hate for Obama..they created a whole new different hateful nasty storyline. Maybe with this explanation and the direct statement from the committee, those who have never cared about this award can understand why the president was awarded it and why he deserves it.

    • InnocentCorruption203 says:

Thats so true Khrish the media is out of control the news reports that I have seen didn’t provide any explanation let alone a valid one! Thanks for the info =)

    • Pisces says:

Khrish,as always you’re so right. And the hate you speak of from the media in my opinion stems from racism.

When I bring up this observation, it seems to rub some people writing here the wrong way..maybe it’s the way I convey my statements.

You notice I don’t comment as much, because sometimes it’s a drag…no fun or edifying at all.

You’re always a bright light, though. Take care.
