MICHELLE OBAMA’S HEALTHY KIDS FAIR
On October 21, 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama hosted an event calledĀ “The Healthy Kids Fair “. The fair was part of the White House’s initiative to promote exercise and healthy eating among children in the US.
“Right now one in three children in this country are overweight or obese. And as I’ve said many times before, if we think we’re dealing with a serious health problem now, you know, then we project out to five, 10, 20 years from now when we see these rates increase and all the illnesses that result from obesity, whether it’s high blood pressure, or heart disease, cancer,” the first lady said in a speech during the event.
“And believe it or not, which is a very surprising thing, medical experts are now warning that for the first time in the history of this nation, we’re headed for the next generation being on track to have a shorter life span than us. That’s the way we’re going right now,” she added.
Though Michelle encourages parents to teach their kids about healthy eating habits, she does admit that it is “easier said than done.”
“But it’s hard to do everything. And when you come home from a long day at work, and the refrigerator is empty, and you know you don’t feel like cooking — (laughter) — the easiest and sometimes the cheapest thing to do is to get in a fast food drive-thru. We’ve all done it because we are overwhelmed and we don’t know what the options are.”
Though “options” may seem limited at the moment, Michelle encourages parents to find a balance with their kids.
“So it’s not about any absolute no’s. It’s just about striking a balance. And that’s what I know your[referring to kids in the audience] moms are trying to teach you all. That’s what I’m trying to teach my girls.”
MichelleĀ added that her daughters Malia,11, and Sasha,8, seldom watch television.
“In our household, no TV during school days. And only a couple hours during the weekend, I’m sorry. But because the TV is off, my girls get up and they move. Even if they’re pushing each other down, they’re running.”

lol look at Mrs. Obama’s face, she look like “hell no im not eating that.”
Wow, Michelle’s hair is laid, I luv it. Might let mines grow, luv this woman. What a role model for America and the world.
Cute picture of those kids with the First Lady. What a great opportunity for those kids!
I think the same thing every time I see the DC students at the White House. I don’t ever remember the local school students having the opportunity to visit the White House like they do know. Neither do I remember the people in DC, all sections, getting to see a President the way President Obama and the family visit different places in the city. I love the way they get out and about in DC. What an experience for these children. They will grow up with photos in their homes with the President and the First Lady.
Hi Khrish, you’re right, I hadn’t even thought about the kids and pictures with the First family. That is something they will cherish forever.
Pisces, can you imagine that there will even be pictures in the homes of everyday Americans with the President or the First Lady! Usually the only pictures in our homes with a President or a First Lady were the ones taken with someone who was a servant or something like that at the White House. All those people who were at the hamburger joints for lunch or at an ice cream parlor. Heck, my girlfriend has a picture of her daughter at a burger place shaking the president’s hand. Can you believe it? It’s just a very different experience. He’s not afraid of the Joe Blows or any of the regular people in the city of D.C. That is a first. LOL I love it! He doesn’t let the threats on his life make him afraid to go out into the city and meet the people or invite them into the White House. It’s really something that Americans have never experienced before.
Khrish, thanks for answering me back. It is amazing. I remember when so many homes had portraits of John F. Kennedy and Dr. King and a lot of them done on velvet backgrounds. Do you remember those, too?
It is just so amazing having this First family in the White House during our lifetimes.
Lord, Pisces! Tell it. My mother and everyone else’s mother I knew had one hanging some place in the home. Knowing that they would never have been able to stand next to any of those leaders. That’s what so amazing about this. Even the pictures of all those people who were at the Inauguration Ceremony. I have never seen anything like this and it is just a great experience. And to boot THERE WAS DOUBLEDUTCH ROPE SKIPPING AT THE WHITE HOUSE. All of these things are history making. LOL
AAAAARRRGH!! michelle and that damn ugly belt, it doesnt even look good no wonder her husband hates it, she should burn it and buy herself a new one it doesnt have to be expensive but that thing is making my eyes bleed.
When was it reported that her husband hates it? I usually read everything about the family and politics in general. I must have missed that one. Please tell me where I can find that article. I can’t even believe that President Obama would tell the press anything about his wife that he didn’t like. That’s just not in his character. Can you point me to that article. If you don’t like it fine, you have that right…..But the President? telling the press something like that, the way many American hate Mrs. Obama. I’d have to read that one for myself. LOL
