BEBE WINANS: “ALL MEN ARE NOT DEADBEAT DADS” + DEBRA WINANS’ RESPONSE

Gospel singer Bebe Winans, his son Benjamin,11, and daughter Miya,14, attended BET’s 10th Anniversary Celebration Of Gospel on December 12, 2009.

In related news, a Nashville judge has dismissed a domestic violence charge that was filed against the singer earlier this year.  In February of this year, Bebe’s former wife Debra Winans accused him of physical abuse relating to “custody issues dealing with their children”

“This has been a trying year, beginning with the death of my father. Even though this allegation has affected not just me, but also the entire Winans family, my children and certain aspects of my career, I chose to stay quiet because I knew the truth,” Bebe said following his exoneration. “To be exonerated of all charges shows the power of trusting in God, and is a wonderful Christmas gift for me and my children.”

“This situation has made me a changed man,” he added. “But it has also helped me see that there needs to be legislation that protects the rights of fathers when it comes to the custody of their children. All men are not deadbeat dads, all men are not abusing women. And it’s unfortunate that the legal system and society assume the worst before they hear the truth. My children are my first priority and I want and need to become the voice for the men around the world who are doing the RIGHT thing! (Source)”

Following Bebe’s dismissal, Debra had this to say:

“First of all, dismissal doesn’t mean absence of guilt and neither does it mean he was exonerated from his actions. But this was dismissed because of the psychologist. He had two sessions, not 10, but only two sessions with him. Not 30 days, but two sessions. He said BeBe showed no domestic violence behavior. But my response to the District Attorney is neither did the man who killed all the people at Fort Hood. They did a psychology analysis on him as well and he showed no signs of domestic violence. But the proof of the matter is that he did it. BeBe is in the wrong business, he needs to be an actor because he’s good at what he does!”

Debra also claims that the singer has limited contact with his children and has not been in his kids’ lives.

“Benjamin’s birthday was December 1. Ask me if he received a card or call from his father. No! I don’t care if he was out the country, I don’t care where he was. You don’t have to talk to me, but that’s why they have text message and emails. But he didn’t even think it was important enough. I always make their birthdays a big deal. But before he closed his eyes that night, he said to me, ‘Daddy didn’t even call me to say Happy Birthday.’ Miya had a concert at school and she looked at me and said, ‘He promised me he was going to be here. But why am I trippin’, he’s only been to one thing I’ve ever done and that was only to pick me up,’” she shared. Click here to read more

It appears that this fight is still on. That’s not good.

  • Shell says:

Sorry, but not calling your son for his Birthday. If this is true. He said she said. But if I was a betting person, I would believe he did not call his son. The kids are going to suffer the most.

Well, she said he didn’t call for the birthday on December 1st, however this is just a few days later, so I have to wonder. They don’t look unhappy to be with their dad either if they feel he gets away with ‘everything’ as Ms. Winans stated. I’m not sure what he did or didn’t do, but I know this is an inappropriate way to handle the situation when you have children.

Talk about two sides to every story. Somehow I am willing to bet on most of what the mom says. Some people have a public and then a private persona. I don’t know the intimate details but will say this–She has custody, she is doing the heavy lifting of raising these kids which is sadly often the case-we women take on so much. I know too many dads fronting and cheesing it up for the “photo-op”. Too many of us need to learn how to be “4 real”

I know that it is reported that Oprah will not have him on her show until this marriage thing is cleared. But he has the spotlight and so he will have the final say. I wish him all the best, but I just have think that his wife must being telling some truth. I always rest assured that the truth will come out, not for the public, but for the sake of the person involved.

    • Champagne says:

I agree…..I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day! I don’t think his wife would just make up stuff if it wasn’t true. Just because he got off doesn’t mean he was not guilty. Most of these Black men not all (but most) are not in their childrens lives. but just let one bebecome famous…then here come the daddy talking bout this is my daughter or son, when they need to go sit down somewhere!

    • JusBeingMe says:

GTSA - I also read where the both of them utilize nannies quite often because they BOTH spend a lot of time away from home, so just because she has custody doesn’t mean she’s doing the ‘heavy lifting’. I hesitate to make a call either way because there is always the 3rd side, THE TRUTH. I’d venture to guess they both have a fault in this. I will say though, he’s requiring more respect from me for not trying to put her on front street and calling her out. Just saying.

  • PlainMean says:

Battery is a misdemeanor charge and if you’re a first time offender, especially one with a good reputation, you would possibly be offered the opportunity to complete therapy and/or classes as a way to have the charges dismissed. The charges are only carried out if you do not complete the classes or therapy. I know this because i’ve worked for FavorHouse and have done abuse counseling. The charges being dismissed does not in any way mean that he did not abuse her. There had to be probable cause for them to arrest him in the first place.
