KELIS TALKS ABOUT HER KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOUR

Singer Kelis has new album, a new baby, and a new outlook on life. In a new interview with Vibe Magazine, the Milkshake singer opens about her music, her messy divorce to rapper Nas, and her ‘knight in shining armour’-her son Knight Jones.

On naming her son Knight(born July 22nd, 2009):

I love that name. I thought I was having a girl. I had a whole plan. I was having a girl and I had bought pink ponies and [stuff]. I was ready to rock and roll. I was like ‘I’m so in touch with myself.’ Obviously, I wasn’t. That was such a farce. So I only had two names for a boy: Knight and Sire. At the time, it would have been that he and I had the same initials, KJ. I just wanted a powerful and regal and majestic name for him.

On how she managed during her divorce:

I have great friends and great family that are stellar. They are so amazing. Whether I ever sell another record or not, I have real friends and real family that stuck with me. They were like however you want to roll, we’ll roll. How do you want to do this? If you want to yell, we can yell. If you want to cry, we can cry. If you want to not think about it, we’re going to not think about it. I said ‘I don’t want to think about it.’ No one brought up anything at all. No one brought up blogs or anything.

On how her son helped her through her divorce:

He really helped me get through everything. I could not let myself wild out and flip out and be emotional and depressed and sad and angry and all these things that naturally happen when you go through something like that. I am not going to let this little guy suffer because I’m in this situation. So I was so focused. My mourning period lasted about a week and then I was like ‘OK, I’ve got to pull this back together.’

On how being a mom has changed her outlook on life:
When I was pregnant I got into an argument with someone. I said ‘you have to realize, nothing you’ll ever do, ever, like for the rest of your life, will mean as much as what I’m doing now. You can win the Pulitzer prize, [the] Noble Peace Prize, and it wont even be a speck in what I’m creating. Do you know what that means?’ Half of the world can do this. That’s how I felt. I really felt like do you know how awesome I am? I’m literally making life right now. That resonated for me everyday. I was reading all these books and I joke with my baby now and I laugh and I’m like you’re made of pizza and bagels and all the good stuff in the world. I was not the perfect candidate for motherhood. But I’m like I can’t believe I made this creature, but I’m so in love.

On why she had a natural childbirth:

I thought with all this crap, if I can do this, I’m invincible. I can do anything. I did no meds at all. They tried to give me morphine, but it was too late. I looked like hell, heinous. But I got through it. It was a very I-am-woman-hear-me-roar moment. That was some painful [stuff]. I’ll never do it again, though.

On recording while being pregnant:

I really felt like every song that I wrote and every note that came out… we’re doing it together. It’s so awesome. It’s such a reminder of how awesome God is. And then to have him and to look at him…

On why she went back to work:
I decided to start thinking. And with thinking came melody. And with melody came ideas. And with ideas, a vision came for this new world of music that I could do. And because I wasn’t signed, there was no pressure. There was no A&R. There was no opinion. I don’t need opinion when it comes to my music. I’m not the greatest singer in the world and I have no desire to be. But I’m honest. And the artists that I always loved the most were never… sonically perfect. They were the Kurt Cobains and Nina Simones. For all intensive purposes, they can’t really sing. But, my God, they get your heart and you believe them and you follow them and they become apart of your life. That’s who I wanted to be. I fell in love again with music.

I was kind of on the fence about Kelis..after the whole nas thing but none of us really knows what was the “straw that broke the camels back” in their realtionship. I kinda judged her from what was being said about her. At the end of the day she is as just human as we all are. I wish her good luck on her new cd.

She’s full of it. She has an album coming out but she claims she needs alimony b/c she can’t work. So if the album goes quadruple platinum is she going to give Nas some money back? I mean she was the one bringing up the fact that Nas has an album coming out in divorce court in hopes of solidifying her 50k/month. Don’t get me wrong, motherhood is important but too many women spend to much time focused on putting themselves on a pedestal for doing what God intended them to do (or maybe he didn’t intend for you but you decided to do what you wanted to do, lol) and then in the same breath going after the jugglar to get their 20% or 30% or 50%. Heck, if you never met ole dude you wouldn’t have two nickels to rub together. Should have enjoyed it while it lasted. Its time to move on and get your own loot.

Erm, ypyou nor anyone else knows whats going on in her and her husbands relationship. I also find it funny that she was married to him for 4 years, together for 7 years but she has no right to spousal support??? She was his WIFE! When she isnt working its a problem and when she is working its a problem too. The girl cant win. It aint coming out of your pocket and i highly doubt you know Nas’s income either, so i guess it shouldnt be bothering you.

I don’t understand why women get so bent out of shape when a woman gets what the courts says that she should have because it has been proved that she deserves it. She didn’t get nothing like that woman married to Tiger is going to get and she never hit one of those golf balls. She’s gonna make out like a fat cat with big income and you are complaining because Kellis got what is “chicken feed” compared to what MJ’s ex and Woods ex will get. What’s wrong with women.

wow, love this interview. she is so real and honest.

Yeah she probably cheated nas out of some money and got a ridiculous amount of money, however she might have deserved it. Nobody knows what went on in there relationship.

N most people know if they could get money like that they would, wither they need it or not

I think Nas and Kelis’ son is beautiful. But Kelis is a golddigger. Get out there and earn your income instead of trying to “mine” Nas for his money. you don’t need that much money to give a child all that he needs.

nas was stupid. there’s no way he should be paying 40k per month in child support. he was stupid not to contest her filing in california if they resided in georgia. had she filed in any other state she wouldn’t have gotten paid like that. that’s on him. in addition, kelis didn’t have a good reputation when he met her, but he decides to marry her anyway? stupid. it’s called a prenup. if you’re too stupid to protect what you feel is yours then you get what you get.

@kelis, you reap what you sow in life.

Have you ever stopped to think that maybe Nas thinks he’s getting off cheaper? He didn’t go public with all that he has done or knows, so if the court awarded her this and he is giving it to her why is everybody, especially women, so upset?

In these celebrity divorce cases involving women of color that do get to leave the marriage with some compensation, it seems that women are their own worst enemy. They never believe that other women deserve what they are awarded from a divorce settlement. Except for Juanita Jordan, or Kimora Simmons, most of these women barely get enough to continue to live in the manner to which they are accustomed. Will we ever stop tearing each other aparts while the other women walk away with all the money and the dreams.

Okay, I’m kind of vibing with her on this interview…. But look here Missy!!!! Nina Simone is the @!#$ that womans music speaks to my soul and give me goose bumps because of her distinctive voice and the messages in her music. So watch it chick! But…Seriously, Kelis sounds like a sistah at peace with her decision and has already obtained closure. I’ve always admired fiesty WOMEN who tell it like is and now how others think it should be. I’ll take being a woman any day than being a lady (governing yourself according to how society tells you you should be, putting up a constant facade, censoring yourself and smiling when ain’t ish to smile about).

Applause!!! This is how we should think of children… As life that we made. And she is right… there is nothing more phenominal in this world than giving birth.

I’m happy for her moving on and she handling her business, but she needs to come up with her own style, because she looks like Sasha Fierce in that picture..
