5 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT: MAVIS SPENCER
You know that she is the daughter of actress Alfre Woodard and writer/producer Roderick Spencer, but what do you really know about Mavis Spencer?
1. Mavis was born on June 13th, 1991.
2. She graduated from Los Angeles’ Harvard-Westlake School last year and will begin Columbia University this fall.
3. She is a nationally ranked equestrian. According to JustWorldInternational , “Mavis Spencer began riding with coaches Dick Carvin and Susie Schroer in 2000. Under their tutelage, Mavis has advanced from the three-foot equitation division to competing in the 2008 Adequan/ USEF National Junior Jumper Championship in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where she won Team and Individual Silver medals and was honored with the William C. Steinkraus Style of Riding Award.” She also recently participated in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney, Australia.
4. She has appeared in Teen Vogue and InStyle Magazine, and plans to model and study acting at Columbia University.

She was gorgeous on the Golden Globe Awards Show. Congrtulations to Monique for her win. She was gracious, dignified and funny at the same time. LOVED IT!

They have two children, daughter Mavis, 14, and son Duncan, 11. Hearing her children, both of mixed race, referred to as “adopted” catches the proud mother off guard. “Yes, I did adopt my children, but I’m so grateful that we did all find each other through adoption,” she says. “If I had tried to carry a baby, I never would have got to my real children — the ones I was meant to parent.”
This should clear things up as to whether or not they are adopted. I love Alfre and thinks she is a great actress and mom. Congrats to Mavis - smart, beautiful and talented.

I had heard her mother talk about Mavis and the horses. That was the first time I knew that she had a daughter. So i did know two things about her, that she rides and that she is adopted. She was very beautiful last night on the Awards show.

She looks just like Alfre Woodard in that photo of her on the horse. I feel like I’m looking at a younger Alfre. Her eyes, her facial features.
