TIGER WOODS MAKES A PUBLIC APOLOGY TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Golf Pro Tiger Woods made an emotional public apology Friday morning for his extra-marital affairs.

“I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated,” Woods said in a televised press conference. “What I did was not acceptable.”

He then later apologized to his family and friends for his transgressions.

“I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior I engaged in. I know people want to find out how I could be so selfish and so foolish. People want to know how I could have done these things to my wife, Elin, and to my children. And while I have always tried to be a private person, there are some things I want to say.”

“Elin and I have started the process of discussing the damage caused by my behavior. As Elin pointed out to me, my real apology to her will not come in the form of words. It will come from my behavior over time. We have a lot to discuss. However, what we say to each other will remain between the two of us,” he added.

Before ending his nearly 15 minutes long apology, Tiger warned the media to stay away from his wife and kids.

“For the sake of my family,” he said, “please leave my wife and kids alone.”

I watched the first few minutes of his apology then I had to turn the tv. I didn’t see the point in this long apology. I do however believe in forgiveness. Everyone deserves forgiveness especially if they are truly deep down sorry for what they did. I don’t have too much to say about this man except he’s a MAN and men do stupid things, it’s their nature. I was not at all suprised by his actions.

Wow! No truer words have been spoken. Actions speak louder than words. There is just so much that can be said about this mess. I hope Tiger, Elin, and his children move on and begin the healing process if that’s what they want.

    Good luck, Tiger.

No truer words have been spoken. I hope Tiger, Elin, and their children can move on from here and begin the healing process of such betrayal. I know it will be a very long road, but at least they are both willing to travel it.

    Good luck, Tiger and Elin!

For the sake of his own kids and those kids that participate and benefit from his foundation, I believe it was good for him to comment…not necessarily apologize.

If every man who has ever cheated had to make public apologies the world would never get anything accomplished.

Tiger has contributed in a stellar way as being a first in Black History and will forever be documented and remembered in in sports and American history for his amazing contributions to golf.

Pisces, I agree with your comment 100%.

What the man did was wrong, but many men with his fame, fortune, youth do it albeit at different levels. He just happened to get caught with his drawers down for all the world to see.

Only apology he owes is to his wife and kids. I hope he is able to rebound from this. It boggles me that certain folk are calling for him to quit golf all together, why? Still too much of a threat on certain levels, literally and figuratively?

GIVETHESTOREAWAY, I agree with you. I am such an admirer of you and your diplomacy when communicating with us on BCK.

Even though Tiger may never state it in public, deep in his heart he must realize that he is one of the Black community’s precious jewels and icons.

He is a sports TITAN, along with the likes of Muhammed Ali, Michael Jordan and Babe Ruth. They all bedded females outside of their marriages in their day and history so far is treating them fairly if not kindly.

Tiger’s father probably would have been so proud and supportive of him if he were still living, just like his Mom was.

Today in my eyes, through his actions, he showed that he is more of a man than most no matter what their ethnicity. It took a lot of guts and fortitude to stand up there given his stature in the world.

You are too kind, you must not have seen the couple of posts where I put my foot in my mouth-it happens :-) .

But yes, diplomacy has its place when I can grab it and admit to applying it liberally when I referred to “certain folk” -lol.

The higher they build you up, the harder the fall! The only people Tiger owes an apology to is his wife and kids. I bet the majority of the men in the companies that dropped Tiger, are also cheating.

    Man + Money + Fame = EGO = CHEATER!!!

Tiger isn’t the first, won’t be the last.

We must keep in mind that a marriage is a two party agreement and usually there are 3 sides to every story. Unfortuately, his side was the one that hit the news. A marrige doesn’t fail because of one person. I, too, believe that he owes the public no apology as what he did didn’t include his talent of being a great golfer. To those who want to contend that he failed his fan, I don’t understand where they picked that one from. He only owes them a good game of golf and the image of perfection at his sport. These very men in his sport, especially his best friend just haven’t been caught in their crap. I feel that Tiger was so protected by his father that he never really did mature. The idea that he would visit his, so called “friend, and end up marrying the babysitter of his friend speaks volumns for me. It seems his mother hasn’t been overjoyed with this choice either. But as others on this post state, his only indiscretion is what happened in his private life so he only owes apologies to his family, not the American public. He still remains the best golfer they’ve yet to see; and though many of them were hopping, they found no use of enhancing drugs to topple the fact that he is the best in golf. I just hoped that he has matured enough to have learned some lessons from this experience.

I just hope no other mistresses come out the dark and try to put him on blast too or demand an apology. I fault those women who had relations with Tiger just as much as he is to blame. They knew this was a married man regardless of his status. I am a firm believer of what goes around comes around. Karma is something serious. God Bless!

Besides, why did they have to take up the TV time for TIGER. He owes the people nothing, but a great golf game.

Tiger isn’t different from a lot of athletes. I am an avid sports fan and I listen to sports radio and watch ESPN EVERYDAY! The sports commentators all say that this is nothing new!
Mike Greenberg was a sports writer for the Chicago Tribune and he would travel with the Bulls. He said if he told people what he saw, they wouldn’t believe him.
Colin Cowherd said there is a very famous retired golfer who did exactly what tiger did. This image of golf being a gentelman’s game is one big fat LIE!
JFK was a much bigger cheat than Bill “Bubba” Clinton. The media picks who they want to build up and then tear down!
I am by no means excusing Tiger’s behavior but it doesn’t make sense that all those news channels carried this live. I saw it because I have sports radio on everyday. I felt sorry for his mother because she looked VERY uncomfortable. I hope he meant what he said and I agree that it’s between him and his wife. Good luck to them!
I hope Tiger comes back by the Masters in April. Trust me those people telling him to retire aren’t golfers. Those folks are just scared he breaks Jake’s record. The PGA wants him back ASAP. Their TV ratings are in the toilet and Tiger brings in money for ALL the golfers. Golfers have PUBLICLY said they want him back!
Tiger clean up your life and then get back on the course. Birdie the 18th hole at Augusta, Pebble Beach and Atlanta. The End!

@Britt, good points. I noticed the lack of color represented in the audience, too but I think he addressed that by clarifying that most of those folk were employed by him, press or other wise close to him in a professional way.

Let’s not forget that golf is and forever will be a sport dominated by the dominate culture world wide and for Tiger to maintain his status he obviously adheres to the ways and whims of the dominate culture in the society that he was born in.

As for his half siblings that are African American, he has always acknowledged them and by all accounts as his older siblings they have always been supportive of him. Tiger is fostering and nourishing the golf career of his niece, Cheyenne (who also is bi-racial or Caublasian, if you will, ;) ).

In my opinion, had he included a bunch of Black people and/or Thai people at the press conference, it would have appeared even more contrived and phonier than it already was.

It would have been a different story if Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson were orchestrating the event, then it would have been a given that he’d have every Black slave and their mammy from his family up there with him.

Hi Britt, I agree with you to an extent. If Tiger had chosen to have Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson flanking him at the press conference, it would have sent a direct message to the Black community.

However I don’t believe that he believes that is his fan base or who butters his bread so to speak which was evidenced by the compilation of those selected to attend the conference probably managed by his handlers.

As for his African American part of the family, all I know is that Tiger has been very supportive of his niece Cheyenne Woods budding golf career.

She’s a cutie and appears to be Caublasian, too!

Hey Khrish! I thought Tiger was an only child as well so I looked it up. I’m gonna cut and paste here “Earl Woods married Barbara Gary and had three children: Earl Dennison Jr., Kevin Dale, and Royce Renee. Earl Jr.’s daughter Cheyenne Woods is also a competitive golfer. Woods and his wife divorced in 1968. He later married Kultida “Tida” Woods in 1969 and they had Eldrick aka Tiger.”
So there you have it. His niece is from his older half brother Earl Jr. He probably never mentions his other siblings because than he’d have to admit he’s part Black.

Thanks for the update ladies. I did go out and read about this family. To my surprise, I found out that Tiger has that stupid monocle for his ethnicity because he father was just as stupid. What a revelation. Way back in his father’s day the old man was refering to himself in this same stupid way. It also said that Tiger was very upset when he found out his father was cheating on his mother. Saw the picture of the niece but could find no pictures of the siblings. Anyone ever seen them. It is so good to be able to talk to the two of you again. I’ve really never knew much about this man except his place in sports and that marriage. Because every since he went Mariah Carey in the media, I didn’t pay much attention to him except what was out in the press. LOL Strange people, he and his father.

Tiger’s mother is a Buddist and he was raised that way from the start by his Buddist mother. As he stated he veered away from hit religious teachings and it backfired on him. He should apologized to the one he hurt the most and that is his wife.

It is so true that what Tiger did was absolutely wrong and hundreds – thousands of celebrities and non-celebrities men & women have done the same thing – so why the public apology? Tiger, unlike most of the cheating celebrities, had a clean image and was (is) well-liked by most people. He is (was) a role model and the PGA kind of needs his celebrity status to help boost their ratings. The public apology was to try to restore the clean, honest image in people’s minds so that he can return to golf and hopefully some endorsements, without a lot of negativity on his shoulders – otherwise his return would do nothing for the ratings or endorsements. I don’t think the public apology was more him apologizing to the public and his family, but more of a publicity stunt to reinstate his “good guy” image to the public so that he can step back into the world of golf and life without people “hating” him so much. I also think the whole public apology was not really his idea but most likely his manager’s / publicity agent’s.

Really, there are so few women that are die hard golf fans. I don’t think that his image is going to suffer whenever he chooses to return to golf. Men usually don’t really care about things like that albeit they try to show disfavor is put before the camera. If he had a huge female following, it would probably affect the watching of the game, but given that most of his fans are men, I can’t see that they are going to linger on Tigers indiscretions as to whether they will watch him play or support him financially in his contracts. But I could be wrong.

Al Sharpton and Jesse jackson don’t represent the Black community and I’m glad that nobody has them on stage flanking them trying to prove what? Jackson and Sharpton speak for themselves more than anything else since they believe they are kings. The bigger they are the harder they fall. The media loves to build people up and then hope, watch and pray that they slip up so they can chronicle the fall. Tiger should apologize to his wife for the rest of his life!

You are entitled to your opinion, of course, but in my opinion, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton were once affective agents for change not only in Black communities but the communities of a lot of poor people too, here in the United States. The two can be considered African American activists.

I agree that there is no one or two leaders that speak for Black people, but I do believe it is important to have people who represent the thoughts and concerns of Blacks. You are right, though, Blacks are not represented through just one person in the media.

When the late Michael Jackson went through his trial ordeal, he recruited the support of both Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and they spoke in support of him to the media. Jesse Jackson even said he felt that Michael was being tried by the media.

I think because of Tiger’s obviously White handlers, having Sharpton or Jackson rallying for Tiger publicly was never an option. Had Tiger called on them I’m sure they would have rallied.

Even if I don’t like how Sharpton and Jackson carry themselves, I’m not going to dismiss or discount their previous contibutions to the struggle of civil and human rights in this country.

After all, Sharpton and Jackson are 2 Black men who both ran for nomination of President of the U.S. before our current President did.

I’m not sure of your age, but even if you’re very young, an examination of history would tell you that both Rev. Sharpton and Rev. Jackson have done great things for the African American community. They are among the ranks of the many activists who have dedicated their lives to fighting for justice, including Rev. King, Minister X, Rev. Abernathy, Rev. Laurie, Shirley Chilsom, and many others. I think that we owe both of them great respect. You may choose to say that they do not represent the black community, but they are two people who have always advocated for and have always had the black community in mind. If there is a meeting being held between politicians or whomever, if Rev. Sharpton or Rev. Jackson are in that meeting, then i’m confident that Black people’s needs will be addressed and fought for. Maybe you should do some reading for black history month!

Thank you for taking up that conversation PLAINMEAN. That’s half the problem with many of our young people, They know nothing about their history. They can’t relate to the struggle even as it goes on today. All the knocks and kicks and spit that was hurled on the person of Jessie Jackson from way back in his time at N.C.A&T that helped us get closer to where we are today. The certainly don’t get it in school anymore and if the parents are feeding it to them, they are lost. They listen to what the media has to say today and tend to poke fun at these people who were out there on the front line fighting for them to get to vote, get a better education and many things that they take for granted. Some really believe that they are living in “post (racial)” America. I hate that word. I always remember the old poem “We ain’t what we should be, we ain’t what we wannabe; but thank God we ain’t what we were.

In my eyes and Most of America Tiger is Black and so is Barack Obama. Point meaning people only treat him with respect because he has so much money, if he didn’t have any money he’d be a black man walking down the street.

I am from the old school and black is black. You are what your father is. So many kids are walking around here talking about they are bi-racial and cau blasian. I noticed that these kids are being raised by non black women.

If he’s happy, I’m happy for him. As I said some time ago. If the average cop pulls him over and he doesn’t have those golf clubs with his name on his shirt…..He will soon find out what he is. He almost found it out this time too. Better ask somebody. The president certainly knows the story. LOL

LOL..True dat, Khrish. He can ask esteemed Professor Henry Louis Gates who claims 50% White DNA. The 100% White police officer arrested him and prevented him from entering his own residence.

Guess he should have worn his Harvard shirt or PBS that day.

I don’t think Tiger’s Mom would approve of him dating a black woman either.

Tiger’s Dad was stationed overseas and in his book he claims he was having problems in his first marriage. So he just end up dating Tiger’s mom. Like father like son. But his Dad is deceased so no need to go there. I think tiger’s mom just wanted to get to America. Nothing wrong with that. It is the best!! A balck woman woud have put Tiger in his place. I noticed Tiger’s mom and Dad went there seperate ways when he made it big. And to the person who said Tiger is Black! Black! Black! We know that, tell Tiger.

If she really wants to prove how upset and wronged she is, then she would leave him and only take the child support. She ain’t going nowhere and anyone who believes she is is naive. Ole girl is getting paid and she’s only going to get just so upset. In no way, form or fashion is she going to walk or stay without that money. Remember, he married the HELP.

I just wanna make a few points …

    1. Last time I check Tiger was a grown man and has the right to choose whatever mate he wants no matter what color she is..men of all colors cheat on there wives ,girlfriends etc.the fact that his wife is white doesn’t make a diffrence she could be purple the point is that he is cheated he was WRONG!

2.The fact that his father got out of his first marriage and married Tiger’s mother is really none of our business people get married and divorced for 234556 reason The man is deceased now let it go.

3.Tiger has never denied he was black. He is a man of MIXED racial backround and just chooses to let it be known. Me myself I have a daughter of black/Asian backround she like tiger is being raised in both cultures and has relatives of BOTH backrounds why should she or any other multliracial person only identify as black because you say so? Oh let me guess Jim Crow right? it’s 2010 not 1910 multiracial people have the right to represent both sides of themselves . Just as we are proud to be black why cant they be proud of who they are? That’s not fair right? I get that they are apart of us ,but they are also apart of somebody else. t
Tiger just as Amerie, Will Demps, Kelis,Tyson Beckford etc…

      @ Jonella,

I don’t think anyone has a problem with bi-racial people embracing both ethnicities. I think it’s great that your daughter knows both of her cultures and even better if she practices any traditions of those cultures. However, I think the problem comes in when parents of “mixed” kids fail to teach their children the realities of the world. You do not have to submit to the thinking of others, but if you go out unaware of what you are up against, then you are at the disadvantage. Not every bi-racial child is a Tiger Woods or a Barack Obama. So any half-black child who looks black or even only half black, must know that when he or she applies for a job, or walks into a store, or chooses a certain mate, there are some people who will only see BLACK! We’re not saying not to acknowledge that you’re half white, or asian, or mexican or whatever.

Lastly, cheating is wrong regardless of the color of the women Tiger cheated with, but his choices do say something about his mind-set. From now on, 100 white women could come out and say she slept with Tiger Woods and everyone can say “well, maybe she did”. If 1 black woman or 1 asian woman claim she had a relationship with Tiger lol… Liar!

I have no problem with Tiger being Blasian as he referred to himself in one of his tapes. It’s the idea that he came out with all this stupid crap for his identity. I can understand now, as I have read his pappy did the same thing. When you see his mom and his dad any fool can tell that he’s of both. But he and Mariah Carey just went stupid with the thing. And to add to the other poster, if you send your child out as a naif there is someone waiting on the corner to school them to their way of thinking. It’s certainly fine that children know their heritage, but it’s also good to know that we live in a world where there are some narrow people as I am sure you see from the images that many have made of our president. Some are so stupid, like Glenn Beck, who believe and preach that he hates whites. How can this man have been reared by his mother and his grandparents, never really knowing his father, hate white people. I can certainly understand a lot of confusion in his young life as he writes about in DREAMS FROM MY FATHER. You have to know that some people were born stupid and make no attempt to improve themselves…….many, because that’s all they have. Toot you heritage, it just seems the only one people have so much trouble with tooting is the BLACK SIDE.

@ Jonell Tiger’s Dad made it our business when he wrote the book, And we can discuss Tiger and say what we want. I don’t have a problem with what race Tiger wants to identify with. He should welcome both of his parents. Please don’t act like people don’t want to identify with being black. Not all people. I was just saying in another post, a guy told me to my face he did not want to marry a black woman because he did not want black nappy head kids. WOW! I did not get mad at him, I told him my feelings and it’s his life. It’s Tiger’s life and until they make a law that I can’t comment on it how I feel, I will keep doing just that. Oh by the way, I respect you thoughts on the subject too.

I’m sorry but I must say it: Who cares?!! Who cares he cheated? Who cares his wife took him back? Who cares if he apologized? Who cares if he does it again? Who cares he went to a rehab for help? Who cares, who cares, who cares? I’m so sick of turning on the tv & hearing about every single thing Tiger & his wife does. That is not my business & I could not care less. What he eats does not make me go to the bathroom.

Tiger did the same thing men do everyday, in fact one of my brother just got busted for doing the same thing. Sadly, it’s not a big deal anymore.

I do want to ask, could he not pick a bunch of prettier looking women? Out of all the 16-20 women, not a one looks better than his wife. My brother always said, “if im going to cheat, it’s going to be with someone who looks better than my wife”. Yes he was the one who got caught & yes she looked better than his wife.

BLACKS SEE TIGER AS BLACK…WHITES SEE HIM AS BLACK AND ASIANS

DEFINATELY SEE HIM AS BLACK…ESPECIALLY NOW THAT HE HAS FALLEN TO

SUCH LOWS. THE FACT THAT NONE OF THESE WOMEN WERE OF COLOR DOES

NOT MEAN HE WAS NOT ATTRACTED TO BLACK OR MIXED WOMEN. THEY WERE

PROBABLY NOT HITTING ON TO HIM OR NOT AROUND…..

NO SOUL. AND THE FACT THAT SOME WANT

AN APOLOGY? PLEAZZE YOUR 15 MINUTES IS UP!

    NEXT STORY!

Could you believe the nerve of that one woman, the porn chick looking for an apology from Tiger. What a comedy that news conference was with that lawyer that gloms herself on to these tabloid messes-standing by her side shoring up that practiced “earnest” look. WTH.

Says porn chick to camera: “I slept with a man I knew was married with children, please someone tell me they are sorry for it to further extend my 15 minutes, someone please, its down to a nanosecond…someone save me…”–ha ha. Wasn’t sure if it was laughter or throw up that had me choking there for a moment. Gag.

Yeah, I can believe it. She wants people to be more outraged about what she got herself into. LOL And Gloria Alridge or whatever her last name makes me want to puke. She is always there to get paid when something nasty happens. Like she is so pro helping women. She is pro helping her bank account. I can’t stand her. You are right, crawl back under the rock you slithered from under. Sick freak.

Doesn’t it make you sick. Just so stupid. Will we ever grow? It’s so amazing the job that the minority of people in the world have given the majority of people in the world the feeling that they are not good enough unless they look like them. Until we get past that ideal, they will continue to rule. It’s against the laws of nature and we have allowed something that is against the law of nature to exist. What a crock!
