Tyra is dumb for asking that question and any parent would be dumber to teach a child to be a gold digger

It is so rare even in the 21st century that women of color have the opportunity to “marry for money” so if given the opportunity, why not?
It’s a bonus if he spoils you, too.

I AGREE . WHY TEACH YOUR CHILD TO MARRY A BROKE MAN OR WOMAN. WE ALL WANT OUR KIDS TO DO BETTER THAN WE DID. WE TEACH THEM THE VALUE OF AN EDUCATION AND A BETTER WAY OF LIFE. WHY NOT MARRY ANOTHER PERSON IF HE OR SHE GOT THEIR OWN. GET YOUR OWN THING GOING ON BUT MAKE SURE THE PERSON YOUR GOING TO BE WITH HAS THEIRS TO. IMO.

Wouldn’t it be better to teach them to be able to make their own money. As Billie Holiday said it “Mother may have and Father my have but God bless the child that’s got his own”. I saw that show and Tyra did it because there were those women telling their daughters to marry for money and even as they are just above toddler stage. One woman had her little girl not to talk to a little boy if he had nothing, like a gift, to give her. Her idea was to teach them to be self supporting and personal value instead of “golddiggers’.. Of course anyone who found what they wanted in someone with money would be a fool not to marry them “because” they have money. I’m just saying. I would want to be the one with my own money too. The parents sounded real stupid to me.

MY POINT MUST HAVE NOT BEEN MADE CLEARLY. I AM NOT SAYING MARRY FOR ONLY MONEY. BUT MARRY SOMEONE WHO IS AS SELF-SUFFICIENT AS YOU ARE. WHEN MEN OR WOMEN MARRY THEY SOULD BOTH BRING SOMETHING TO THE TABLE. I FOR ONE TELL MY KIDS TO FIND SOMEONE BECAUSE YOU LOVE THEM, BUT ALSO MAKE SURE THAT PERSON CAN CONTIRBUTE TO THE HOUSEHOLD. WHO WANTS A MAN OR WOMAN THAT CAN NOT HELP ENRICH THEIR LIFESTYLES. THAT IS NOT SAYING GO OUT THERE AND FIND A RICH PARTNER THAT IS SAYING FIND SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP PAY THE BILLS.IMO

Flavor Flav has some good looking children but it’s sad how he’s been wasting his money and not taking care of his parental financial responsibilities. :(

I’ve heard of far worse reasons for getting married. Besides, marriage was always some sort of business agreement between the paternal heads of two families throughout millenia – they just married their children off instead of signing a paper. It wasn’t until around the 18th or 19th centuries that people began to marry for love, so people marrying purely for money isn’t making a mockery of marriage as some would think. It’s far better than being a jump-off or a baby mama, in my opinion. At least you’d have the law on your side.

Not that I’d encourage it, but such marriages are as old as dirt.

Jessica, there are people, thank God, who still do marry for love. I can’t imagine marrying someone for money. I’ll make my own money.

i think people see having money as security and in many ways it is,but there is a price for marrying or being with someone only for money. Marrying for money is nothing new a lot of times that is what arranged marriages are all about and statistically they work out a lot better then people who marry for so called love.

No surprise about Flavor Flav. Terrible about the baby thrown in the Nj river and Al Sharpton daughter.

Yeah, I met a European girl whose marriage was arranged and they are very happily married, and have been married for years, but most people, at least U.S. born, don’t get married like that. She stated that they did not have sex before marriage (which, according to her, is common too) and she credited the longevity of her marriage to those issues). She didn’t mention anything about money.

I guess to some people marriage is a business arrangement thus marrying for money is acceptable to them. However, to me, marriage is a coming together of spirit, soul, body, and sharing a deep abiding love, commitment, and union that I hope lasts forever while enduring the ups and downs of life while growing with that person. My definition my sound antiquated to some, but I could never reduce it down to money because material possessions come and go. That, to me, would be way too superficial. One can have money as long as infinity and be miserable. I’m not saying that one should marry someone with no ambition or someone who is broke, but there’s nothing like building with a partner and sharing those experiences while sharing a relationship that far surpasses anything money can buy. You can have all the money in the world and not be valued as a person. No wonder people get divorced. Marriage is very serious, and I don’t take it lightly, but that’s me. Whatever someone else chooses to do and how they live their lives, so be it because I guess people derive their own definition of marriage.

There’s a couple I read about that have been married 85 years. It’s people like these to whom I get my advice from because they get it. They’ve endured the trials and tribulations of being in a relationship and understand what marriage is all about. Most people don’t see this kind of commitment.

To answer the question: NO, I would not teach my child to marry for money. I would teach my child that she/he is better than that and deserves to be loved and to know what love is. I would never want my child to reduce themselves to some paper that’s here today and gone tomorrow. There’s nothing wrong with having money, but it should not be the basis of a marriage (in my opinion), and then when she/he is old enough, they can make their own decision.

Beautifully stated, Teri. To me, the reality is that many Black women and women of color can’t live out the fantasy of marrying for money, (REAL MONEY) anyway.

I noticed something as well about this on another blog.Amazingly, your linear perspective on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read before. I am still trying to figure out over the conflicting points of view, but Im tipped strongly toward your point of view. And in any case, thats what is so wonderful about modern democracy and the marketplace of thoughts onthe internet.
