Heidi recently spoke about why she and Seal chose to name their fourth child “Lou”.

“We had four or five names that we really liked. We wanted to wait until she came out and then we liked Lou. I liked Ellie, but she looked more like a Lou. Lou was the winner (Source).”

    Awwww…she’s chubby and pretty. Precious!

(I bet they have their fingers crossed along with many BCK readers that her hair doesn’t get any kinkier or her skin darker than cafe au lait with extra cream)

@Virgie….Ummmm why in the world would you say something so degrading and idiotic about Heidi and Seal keeping their fingers crossed that their baby’s skin does’nt get darker and that her hair does not get kinkier!
Are you black? If so, YOU ARE A DISCREDIT AS WELL AS A DISGACE TO YOUR RACE!!!

How could u say that about Virgie, there may be some readers who are hoping just what she said. I have a friend who told me he was going to marry a white woman, because he did not want black nappy head kids, Now call it stupid, I did not agree with him, He is very well educated, but that’s how the man feels for whatever reason. Self hating or whatever u want to call it, But it’s out there and Virgie just told the truth. Some may feel it, but will not say it, for fear of U.

From Madame CJ Walker’s inventions to Spike Lee’s “School Daze” to Kiri Davis’ “A Girl Like Me” that revised Dr. Kenneth and Mamie Clarks “doll experiments” back in the 1950s…how far have we really come?

My response was partly facetious but very much an honest, direct commentary on how black Americans perceive beauty (European vs. African features), even on this blog/website.

Plus, the other responder assumed I’m black, so what does that make him/her?

maybe that comment was just so out of the blue and no one was really thinking that so it might have came as a shock.

its just a picture of a family i dont think it needs to turn into something do deep at the perception of european features in the black community… just saying

Lou is growing out of the newborn stage, she’s looking a little different than the pics posted a couple of months back, getting cuter AND not because she seems to have gotten lighter, to quiet all that nonsense already.

And little Leni, looks like they cut his ‘fro down, it is looking more compact and darker. The blonde highlights seem to be missing in this pic.

I love Seal and Heidi!! I truly believe she married him for true love! Alot of these chicks (Kim and Khloe K) are marrying black men for the wrong reasons. This is what real interracial love is all about. Because this love does not see color or hair grades. I love them and their kids are beautiful!!!

    • Shonda February 22, 2010 at 1:18 pm

No, it is not a joke. Yeah, they have a show. But, look how they got it. Kim made a sex tape. Also, she stole $100,000 from Ray J’s mother to buy clothes to open her store. I would discuss Khloe, but I’m not going to go there. To make a long story short, neither of these girls would marrying a garbage man in 2 weeks or a month. They are out for fame and fortune.

There is nothing about these girls or what they are teaching their baby sisters decent!! Botox, sex tapes, stealing money, disrespecting there mom on t.v., babies outsid of marriage and the list goes on.

One thing, I can say is Kim does not drink. lol But, hey we all have our opinion of them.

As for Heidi, she is an excellent role model for alot of people. She shows you do not have to do anything, but be yourself for fame and money. She is also graceful and lovely. She comes across very strong, friendly, and a great mother.

The Khardasians definitely aren’t role models, no disagreement there. And they may have gained popularity through scandals, but they were already filthy rich. And I wouldn’t blame them for not marrying a garbage man, who would expect them to? Most women usually want men who can either bring in more than they do, or at least match it! The Khardasians are for purely entertainment purposes and I enjoy my trashy tv, along with all of the Housewives series on Bravo lol. But I too enjoy Heidi and Seal as a fam.

Lol as an avid Keeping Up With the Khardasians viewer, I feel qualified to state that Kim and Khloe have no reason to marry for monetary gain. Lol I think that both girls are honestly in love. Khloe’s rushed marriage may have a little bit to do with competition with her other sisters’ relationships. And Kim and Reggie are not married, they’ve been together for a while and Reggie is or was a cheater. Watch the show! Lol.

Seal looks very… suspicious. He should lose the hood.

I think Seal & Heidi’s children resemble a beuatiful mix of their parents.
Love and respect for each are very important for a marriage to work and to me Seal and Heidi clearly have their marriage based on that.

But my confusion is, are you saying that Seal is not a real African American and thus doesn’t have issues that most African Americans have? OR are you saying that President Obama isn’t a real African American and thus doesn’t have the issues that most African Americans have? Hopefully you mean Seal?

Excuse me! I’m Black American and I lived in Europe for 10 years. When did they get over problems with the color of one’s skin. It must have been recently. My pre-teen son was stopped and taken into custody to be brought to our home by the cops in London because we lived in Hampsted and they thought he was doing something wrong because he was in the neighborhood. He was brought home to us where we had an Italian guest and the cop spoke to our guest to ask if our son lived there because he thought the home belonged to whites. I mean he ignored us until the guest told him that we lived there, not him. And let’s not even mention the racism in Italy. So where do you live? Or are you white and not aware of what people of color are up against in Europe?

Nice to see Leni out and about and out front once in a while. She looks nice.

That baby is gonna be a little darkie, no doubt. I say she gonna get about the color of peanut butter. And if her hair is that kinky at 4 months, you can bet your bottom $$ she gonna be a nappyhead like her brother Henry by the time she’s 3.

And it’s all black to me!

    ROCK THAT!

And we don’t know why who married who. I think Kim really loves Reggie Bush and Khloe loves whoever that other black guy is. But that Disick dude looks like a controlling manipulator to me. Don’t ask me why, he just does.

Seal… I ain’t sure about him. I think Heidi married Seal for love, maybe she truly is color blind. But Seal – I think Heidi being one of the more attractive white women is one of the things he likes and prefers. I just don’t think he is too comfortable enough in his skin to be out with a black woman. He probably thinks black women are all sorts of problems. You know the type – the dark skin brother that all the girls used to tease because he was so dark (in his case, he had them scars too), but that darkness that turned away black women turns on white girls. Or least that’s how it is in America. Ain’t sure how it goes in Europe. You may say dark skinned guys are ‘in’ but they still getting teased in school for being dark and ‘too black.’

I think most of Blacks in Europe are 1st or 2nd generation African descended, so many of them are dark. I wonder if they have the same issues with being teased by other black folks because they are dark? It would certainly make them shy away from other Blacks if that was true, and of African Americans – in favor of white women and men.

Lou is a cutie – no matter if she stays light or goes darker, stays wavy or goes nappier. She looks likes her beautiful brothers.

Seal was with Tyra for a while. He would have married the girl, but she didn’t want to settle down.

Seal only has ONE type — MODEL. Black, white, whatever. He doesn’t care as long as it is MODEL.

But I think Seal and Heidi truly love each other. People always want to tear down seemingly healthy and loving relationships for some strange reason. It is like the refuse to believe people are REALLY happy.

Or they are bitter and want someone to join their bitter party.

I agree with Virgie. Overall the comments on BCK, even in this thread allude to race, whether it be about black peoples’ issues with skin color/hair texture, or interracial peoples’ opinions about what is better (usually themselves) or the pollyannas who think we live in a post-racial world where only love exists. This also includes any lurking pessimists who think celebrity idolatry (of any color) is destroying society.

I have experienced racism in American, in France, and in London, so I think Virgie’s comment isn’t just for the Americans.

Thanks Hana. Those who took offense are suspect!

I stand by what I wrote initially. To act as if color does not play a role in THIS society (meaning America where those Europeans live) is naive to say the least. I read once that Heidi and Seal agreed that they would leave the U.S. if Obama was not elected President on the grounds of his skin color.

I love this family and the new baby is beautiful. I also like the Kardashians and watch their show. It all fairness to the above comments it is true people are treated differently because of how they look. A beautiful person gets preferred treatment; they receive better grades, better jobs, people go out of their way to help them. Therefore, we all strive to look as beautiful as possible. There is big business in beauty so society encourages it,hairdressers encourages it, doctors encourage it (surgery & diet)and we all buy into it.
Some of the most beautiful people are biracial because they seem to have it all, not too pale, not too dark, just enough curl, exotic looking and excepted into every society. Diversity is good, healthy and even reduces birth defects and inherited diseases. If one of the lesser benefits of inter-cultural marriage is hair that is easier to take care of,so be it, diversity must be part of God’s plan for human beings. I mean we all know what happens when cousins marry and look what happened to King Tut’s dynasty; deformed feet and super long arms(Marfan’s syndrome).

Mina, with all due respect I believe I missed the point of your post. Are you saying that individuals should strive to mix in hopes of creating beautiful progeny that will somehow better the world? I know I must have misread, tell me that is so.

For one, beauty is largely subjective. In addition, the dominant culture that controls the media and runs things usually puts out there the idea of what it is suppose to be.

I can site cultures around the world that have very diverse views on what beauty is. In some cultures, a size two is seen as unattractive as opposed to more westernized ideals. I could go on. I won’t totally debunk your overall theory that when an individualized consensus has arrived on what it is suppose to be, albeit when mating, selecting an item to purchase, what have you, then of course it has its merits. But at the same time, do we really want to operate in a world that unabashedly superficial?

I would beg to argue that many of the worlds greatest leaders, scientist, and individuals that have made real impacts on health and society, technology etc were and are long shots for hunk or Ms. America status. In the end, physical beauty STILL, can get you only so far.

Yes, I’ve seen many beautiful mixed raced kids, but so too have I seen gorgeous White, black, etc children. All have something unique and beautiful to bring to the table as far as that is concerned. It would take a novel for me to really vocalize all I believe on the subject and why I think you have just crossed a slippery slope with your observations.

I will take a stab at tackling your hair analogy for fun and just to keep it simple. Let me pose it to you, which is better wool or silk? There are many uses for wool and many uses for silk, also some prefer one over the other, depends…each has its own beauty, that is undisputable.

It would be nice if we could as human beings get beyond the superficial PERIOD. So lets say the races mix, we get to the point where mixed race “beautiful” people in your theory have taken over planet earth, will their “beauty” cure cancer, stop poverty on a grand scale, or end violcence?

Khrish, you posted straight to the heart of the matter and sometimes that is all it takes.

I just have a few last sentiments regarding the post I replied. Beauty has its place. We were given five senses to take in this world and appreciate what it has to offer and I appreciate it in my everyday life. But sometimes, and I have been guilty of it too, we get caught up in it a bit much when it pertains to valuing another human being.

I also took the post as some sort of soft sell on interracial mating which I am not against, but what rubs me is the decidedly superficial slant for its promotion, along with a thinly veiled dis-I don’t think I misread the insinuation that biracials are somehow “aesthetically superior”-I am still like huh? and chose to leave it alone. Everyone has a right to their opinion.

I was looking for something to take away from the post or that would tie it up or provide more insight, but even the closing comments seemed to be more race based propaganda. Didn’t get that dating and mating within one’s “race” is analogous with inbreeding– Huh? It was interesting, I read an article recently where scientists have found that there are more differences (if you can even call it that since we are dealing with minutiae when it comes to differences between man) genetically between certain black africans and bushmen (who are also black africans) than it is certain Europeans…just something to chew on.

            —-

Human subspecies don’t exists! Unlike many animals, modern humans have not been around long enough, nor have populations been isolated enough, to envolve into separate subspecies or “races”. Despite surface differnences, we are among the most similar of all species. Human DNA consists of more than 3 billion building blocks whose sequences form genes, just like letters spell a word. For any two unrelated people, these letters are 99.9% the same, meaning that only 0.1% of our DNA is unique!

Most variation is within, not between so-called “races”. Of the small amount of total human genetic variation (0.1% of our DNA), 85% exists within any local population, be they Germans, Nigerians, Kurds, Koreans or Cherokees. Two random Koreans are likely to be as genetically different as a Korean and a German. Two random Nigerians are likely to be as genetically different as a Nigerian and a German. Two random Cherokees are likely to be as genetically different as a Cherokee and a German, etc.

Humans cannot be subdivided into “races” – there isn’t a single characteristic, trait or even one gene that can be used to distinguish all members of one “race” from all members of another. People are brainwashed if they believe someone can be “black” or “white”, because humans are not “black” or “white”, neither physically, nor on the level of genetics!

Skin color is only skin deep! Because skin color has been under strong selective pressure, similar skin colors can result from convergent adaptation rather than from genetic relatedness. Sub-Saharan Africans, populations from southern India, and Indigenous Australians have similar skin pigmentation, but genetically they are no more similar than are other widely separated populations.

@Rita J, I see that part of my post went over your head. You are preaching to the choir so please rest your lecture. THE ARTICLE I referenced DID NOT MENTION SEPARATE RACES AND NEITHER DID I, BUT rather GENETIC VARIATIONS that occur across AND within populations of people AND HAVE EVOLVED MUCH LIKE THE SUPERFICIAL DIFFERENCES IN SKIN COLOR,HAIR TEXTURE,ETC. AMONG HUMANS. AND I QUOTE AGAIN, THESE GENETIC VARIATIONS WERE FOUND TO BE GREATER BETWEEN A BUSHMEN AND A WEST AFRICAN WHO PEOPLE GENERALLY LUMP TOGETHER AS BELONGING TO THE “Black race” THAN that of a WEST AFRICAN AND A EUROPEAN FURTHER UNDERMINING THE NOTION OF DISTINCT RACES AMONG MAN at least on a scientific level. GET IT.

I WON’T GET INTO THE WHOLE CULTURAL AND SOCIAL CONTEXT ARGUMENT OF WHAT IT(race)IS AND HOW WE DON’T (REALITY CHECK) LIVE IN A COLOR BLIND SOCIETY based on these contexts DESPITE BEING ONE MANKIND UNDERNEATH.

The article was based on research much like past studies of the genetic variations that occur among Eastern European Jewish (Ashkenazi) that somehow increase the prevalence of Tay-Sachs among that population. That said, I still don’t know how previous poster arrived at similar conclusion with regards to the random “black” mating amongst themselves and her reference to it as “inbreeding” -huh? as well as the notion of “blacks” “mixing it up” to create some sort of master race albeit I don’t know what is so masterful about creating possibly (in her view)a more “beautiful species”-inside joke-lol.

Here is a link to the article I refer to if BCK allows: http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/yb/141392910. I will also take liberty and post excerpts from it here: By Eric Berger, Houston Chronicle Feb. 17–Houston scientists have sequenced the full genomes of a Bantu from Southern Africa and an indigenous hunter-gatherer from Namibia’s Kalahari Desert, believed to be the oldest known lineage of modern humans. The study is notable because the Bantu participant is South African Bishop Desmond Tutu. The sequencing, performed at Baylor College of Medicine, reveals information about the surprising genetic diversity of hunter-gatherer societies and should provide basic information needed to improve medical care.

Today’s hunter-gatherers who live in the Kalahari Desert are as genetically distinct from a person living in West Africa as a West African is to a European. “It’s an interesting kind of liberal morality lesson,” said Jeffrey Reid, a Baylor geneticist who worked on the study. “It goes to show that you literally can’t really judge people from how they look.”

Two random Koreans are likely to be as genetically different as a Korean and a German. Two random Nigerians are likely to be as genetically different as a Nigerian and a German. Two random Cherokees are likely to be as genetically different as a Cherokee and a German, etc.”

I was responding to the comments above me regarding beauty and hair. My point was very simple; Seal has a beautiful family and so do I. Diversity is healthy and natural. Dividing and segregating certain populations of people is not nature but a man made concept that had devastating consequences. This is not just my opinion but based on genetics.
As long as there is big money to be made in the beauty industry beauty will be sold to the American people. I can not speak for other countries since I have only lived here. Of course we all want to look the best we can, I know that I do, my husband appreciates it and I intend to keep him happy. I would prefer to have an IQ of 130 and find a cure for childhood cancer, but I don’t so I just have to work with what I have.

Mina,I feel sorry for you if your looks are all you feel you’ve got to offer and I certainly hope your husband values you far beyond arm candy as there are many beautiful women out here, always someone better looking and younger. When you get old and all the plastic surgery in the world fails to achieve a certain end, perhaps then you will be forced to look deeper and re-evaluate certain mindsets.

I stand by all that I wrote. I am surpised no one else took your post to task, though you have a right to your opinion.

Dividing what populations of people Mina?– Based on what, again? Rethink what you posit on genetics. Rita J. and I gave you a novel to decipher a clue.

..and for the last time, who is against interracial dating–I just don’t see it as a panacea and I will not go out of my way seeking a mate to “mix it up”, of course if it happens, it happens. Lastly, I don’t feel “mixed” children own the store on beauty–Got it?

GTSA, your post hit the nail on the head exactly. I read Mina’s post, but didn’t have the energy to go in on it because, yes, she has a right to her opinion, but sometimes, trying to discuss reality with people is a huge task. She seems very obsessed with being mixed or the whole idea of “mixed people look better/have higher IQs” nonsense, blah, blah, blah. She wants to keep her husband happy, well let’s hope he’s keeping her happy (I’ll wager to say she’ll say he is), and also that if her looks are the only thing keeping him in her life, that she stays looking “beautiful” for the rest of her life. What some people can’t comprehend is that beauty fades, and as you so elequently stated, there’s always someone more beautiful, with a nicer body, etc. One step off a curb or an accident can change a person’s looks forever, but vanity is the way of our land. What else can you say?

Hi Pisces. I always say, it helps to know someone’s angle or where they are coming from when they make a point. Believe the previous poster is either bi-racial, in interracial relationship, has bi-racial children, one or all so that is her slant, more power to her.

As far as some latter postings including my own regarding race or rather the ambiguity that exists surrounding it as born out by current scientific findings, you have three camps: 1)those like myself who are going along with those scientific findings that were posted Wikipedia style on this thread by another poster (my question is, what will they find out next tomorrow?) 2) those who have an agenda of promoting the findings to deal with their own racial identity issues-as theoretically they do not have to i.d. as “black” or “white” if race does not exist, so I guess that is freeing in a sense. (some unfortunately have way more issues id’ying with their black/non-white selves if they were truthful and I wonder why that is?) 3) Lastly, there are those who believe the current findings on race can help lay to rest and debunk all of the other racist propaganda that still exists out here noting that “blacks” are subspecies and “whites” are genetically superior.

No matter the findings, social, cultural and geo based racial divides outside of the petri dish of a science lab are still very much alive and that people are going to keep categorizing until kingdom come is a given–ITS WHAT WE HUMANS DO AND I ACCEPT THAT FACT AS LONG AS MY RIGHTS AND FREEDOM AREN’T BEING COMPROMISED IN THE PROCESS. ALSO, Differences should not be pretended away all together regardless of the findings. Myself, I’d rather embrace differences and try to make sense of ways people are both different and very much alike and stay on the high road while taking all that in–it can be done. It is possible to walk and chew gum at the same time

One thing is certain, it is clear to see that the topic of race is still a very explosive one. I think I will take a breather myself.

@ Teri, I’ve read a few of your posts here at BCK and find myself often nodding my head in agreement most of the times.

You or another poster might have had the skill to take the post to task with less hyperbole than myself (looks like I’ve written some novels here ;-) ), but I am still glad to see that the points I was trying to make were gotten.

Not a knock on Mina, the person, who I do not know. She probably was just bold enuff to speak aloud what others may feel, but I cringe in general at the idea of eugenics whether directly referenced or implied, and shall I say if we as a society dare ever cross that slippery slope, 1) lets hope the practitioners have a better understanding of genetics than she does 2) let it be for something medically based versus having a child with hair that a comb slips through more easily (rolling my eyes).

Should add, just not a big fan of marked superficiality period.

Pisces, your comment was funny and pointed. Tell me you borrowed it from one of the greats-Pryor? Foxx? Pryor when in his zone, was often lazer sharp, observant and funny as heck when he started off into the racial commentary. Some people chafed in the wake of his straight-no-chaser routines.

I just hope folk don’t go getting panties in bunches and what not, going off on tangents and filtering it in ways it wasn’t meant to be colored.

For me, she underscoring GTSA’s testimony very well with some widely accepted genetic facts, maybe not in the US of A… lol – I don’t know. Why are you so pi**ed off at people who don’t share your opinion? What is your problem? I guess you still believe in that old eurocentric propaganda sh** about black and white, different phenotypes and races, and that’s the real problem here, because people like you are trying to infect others with mental poison and constant negativity.

I guess in your next comment you will come up again with crap about “white” people who invented this and that, etc… Please, keep it to yourself. Your are as much guilty, because you take a big part in this dirty game, too. And excuse me, your attitude st*nks…

BCK I’m assuming that this Pisces person works for you because how else do you continue to let their comments slip by you???

There really isn’t another blog that focuses on black celeb kids out there. But what I once thought was a really great blog and forum for conversation within the black community concerning black children, has suddenly started lacking the inegrity it once had. Your site is turning out to be a bunch of foolishness like all the others. And it’s mostly because of the ranting by one poster who goes insane when people disagree with them. It’s one thing to disagree, it’s another thing to be downright ridiculous and childish. What’s the point of posting rules if you aren’t going to make posters abide by them? How lame. In the last few weeks I’ve seen many complain. I hope you don’t only take note of that but take action.

This whole, “mixed children hold the key to beauty” is the most ridiculous argument I have ever heard, and I’ve heard it so many times it’s nauseating.

I live in a city that has probably one of the highest IR dating/marriage populations in the country, and there are plenty of mixed children, and I can guarantee you that the “all mixed children are beautiful” myth doesn’t fly. I never go in on children, EVER, but it’s just a reality. One of the most beautiful children I know is my friend’s 6 month old black granddaughter. She’s absolutely one of the most beautiful children I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen beautiful black, white, Latino, Asian, and biracial children. No one has the market on who looks better. Also, beauty has nothing at all to do with color; it’s the features of a person that make them beautiful AND beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I believe it’s overrated because there is no guarantee that your looks will. Actually, it won’t last forever, so get something more substantial in your life because once that little pretty face isn’t around anymore, than what?

I was watching a show on TLC about a young, very pretty model who took tremendous pride in her looks. Well she had a crazy boyfriend who hired someone to throw acid in her face. Her face is now disfigured for life. The one thing that stood out to me was the fact that she said she is more humbled now and realized the more important things in life. She was superficial and shallow and the accident made her focus more on her character and other more endearing traits.
