She is a wife, a mother, a producer, an actress, and now she is helping to shape both her children’s film and music careers. Read below to learn more about mom Jada Pinkett-Smith and how she plans to help her children Willow,9, and Jaden,11, in their careers.

On why she no longer has a band and why you should look out for Willow’s new album:

I have always had a love for music, always, always, and always. I probably started to pursue it a little late in life. But it was always a passion of mine. I had always been too afraid to venture into music, but I decided when I was about 30 to just go for it. I started a metal band called Wicked Wisdom. I toured and I loved it. But soon after, my kids’ careers started taking off, so I sacrificed it. I am pleased to say my daughter, Willow, will be putting out an album soon and I look forward to enjoying music through her creations. So I am excited about that, and she’s pretty awesome. She will be better at it then I ever could be anyway! (Laughs)

On her experience with working with her son on The Karate Kid:

That experience was quite unique, and that was probably one of the most difficult projects I have worked on because this was my son’s first starring role, and it was for such a classic movie. He was working in China away from his friends and family. Even though we brought family out there from time to time, it was still long hours. Not only did he have to shoot but he also had to practice during lunchtime and weekends. He really had no downtime for about four months….”

On how she keeps her children grounded:

It’s not about me keeping them grounded. It’s just in how we live our life. Really, we are regular folks. It just so happens that our family is in the
entertainment business; that’s really the only difference from the majority of the people they meet.

On balancing her life:

Just remembering to take time out for myself and to take time out to do the things that I really love. And just remembering that acting and
producing is a business, and it’s not my whole life. So that really keeps me balanced.

  1. I love the fact they allow these kids to have their own voice…with parental guidelines of course AND from what I heard on Oprah, it was Willow’s idea to cut her hair..Jada was for it from the beginning, Will not too much but he gave in..anyway whats the big deal about her hair, it doesn’t make the person and it’ll grow back.

I just love the fact they’re allowed to be their own individual selves and not pushed into things because parents want them to (like most people do).

Communication is key and allowing kids to express themselves (when it isn’t hurting anyone) works. Me and my husband have different approaches – he’s basically do as I say until you’re grown – I’m more open minded and believe in allowing kids to find their own individuality instead of being who I want them to be – and the outcome is my son communicates with me more…some things I’d rather not discuss but I love the fact he feels he can come to me with the information. He’s not open with his father at all and it bothers him. I try to tell him to go to his father in certain situations and he told me he’d rather not deal with the situation at all if he has to talk to him about it…btw my son is 14. At the end of the day the parents are making the final decision but I’m a big believer in at least giving them the platform to express their feelings/opinion…of course age appropriate and being respectful and so forth and the Smith kids are at that age when they can do that.

    P.S. Jaden is a star!

  2. Gel Us See! What’s wrong with you people? I applaud Jada for doing her and thinking out of the box, even if I’m not into that type of music myself. Some of you are like Crabs in a Barrel. If you have nothing nice to say, ove along to your own sorry life. What have you done for you lately?

    • I can tell you what I’ve done for myself & my son just today but it would take up this entire page & I don’t think that would be nice.

  3. Ahh,this explains that ridiculous mohawk! Jada is trying to bring out her inner rock star through Willow’s poor head.

    • Makes sense to me lol

Poor Willow got her head top sacrificed for her mom’s “rocker” style dream. Is she really living vicariously through her daughter?

  4. Haters, haters, haters!Give Willow a chance sheesh. She is a VERY good singer if you heard her at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert, look it up on Youtube. Chile can SANG. Go head Willow!Do you

    • I did hear her sing at the NPP tribute and it was not good. She just sounded like a kid singing… but perhaps I missed something. Can you direct me to a video of her “sanging” and sounding great? I will even settle for a clip of her sounding good so I can hear her cd worthiness. :|

      • YAll PEOPLE NEED TO FIND SOME BETTER TO DO BESIDES BASHING THESE KIDS..WHO R U TO JUDGE THEM AND THERE TALENTS..HOW DARE YOU PEOPLE..AT LEAST THEY’RE NOT OUT HERE SMOKING, DRINKING, & GANG BANGING..THERE KIDS TRYING TO DO SOME WITH THEMSELVES..SO B4 U BASH THEM AND THERE PARENTS PUT U AND UR PARENTS IN THERE SHOES..HOW WOULD U FEEL..I THINK THESE KIDS GOT MAJOR TALENT AND IF I WAS IN FRONT OF THEM I WOULD TELL THEM TO FORGET WHAT THESE HATIN PEOPLE SAY AND FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS..DON’T STOP FOR NOTHING..IGNORE IGNORANCE & IGNORANT PEOPLE

  5. Jada seems to be trying to live through her kids. I hopr they don’t startfeeling pressured. At this age, I would let my child enjoy their talent instead of trying to meke them a star.

    • Maybe the idea can be “encouragement”, Kimri?

Maybe Jada brings ideas to her children, or better yet, they bring ideas to her?!
They’ve seen what their parents have done and I’m sure these kids know what they want.
After they’re done trying something, they pick whether they want to continue with something or not.

  6. Please overlook my grammatical error witht the wrong “thong” it should have been “throne!” I do apologize.

  7. You people need to stop already! My heavens!!!! I did not know you were appointed to the position of GOD! If so, please let me know so I can start bowing down to you and your thong!! I need a blessing or two and throw in some favors while you are at it! Leave these children alone! Leave the parents alone! Amen for your opinion but when it gets insulting, hurtful or just downright evil, then it must stop! Remember God is ALWAYS IN CONTROL! So if something is not up to par, you BEST believe it will be revealed, but until then, be happy that there are black folks out there doing something positive. Jaden is not smoking pot and neither is Willow. Jaden is not in a gang and neither is Willow. Will and Jada are not predophile or physically abusing their kids….shall I go on?!

  8. This family is like the Proctor Gamble product line. Is there anything about themselves they wouldn’t try to sell? SMDH! Is this the reason why they have that little girl walking around looking so grown? To promote a cd, when she should be concentrating on being a child and growing up naturally. Good luck with the making of your very own Lyndsay Lohan.

  9. Didn’t know Willow could sing! Can’t wait to hear what she puts out.

Sn: I hated Jada’s music and always thought Will was a corny rapper. Im just saying.

    • Agreed. Will was a corny rapper & Jada’s music also sucked. Acting is their thing.

Don’t know if Jaden & Willow can sing/rap.

  10. True talent, that is a lie. They are doing it because they are able to. They need to squash this jealousy thang this little girl have towards her brother. Jada can’t even sing, I didn’t pay her any mind, so why would I listen to her daughter?lol. What a waste of money, isn’t that what most rich people do. Thank goodness that Tre’s mother steered him in another direction. Thank goodness that she is his mother and not Jada. I love this picture of Willow looking like a little girl. Is it me, does these kids ever look happy? especially Jaden.

    • that wicked wisdom band of hers was a joke! people were not taking them seriously at all – first because it was a heavy metal band of women . and then she being a black woman just turned alot of people off sadly. she wasn’t able to do much of anything musically – even when she had will performing with her sometimes to try and draw a bigger crowd.

    • I did see Willow sing at the Nobel Peace Prize celebration, and she was really GOOD! That child could SANG!!!! :) Also I just saw Jaden rap on a jusin Bieber song, and it was age appropriate, and not bad at all.
Remember both Will & Jada used to be in the music industry, so it’s in the kids’ blood. I can relate because I’m really into Art & Justice, and I just found out that my great great grandfather was an Artist & a Lawyer….so you see, the apple doesnt fall far from the family tree.

    • *Shrugs* I dunno. I didn’t care for Willow’s ‘genie in a bottle’ look and disagree that her singing is “great”, but I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world for parents to find or make ways for their children to pursue their interest. Lots of parents do it. (At least I know I do to a degree.) I just hope Willow’s doesn’t get exploitive (read: sexualized).

      • To me a parent is a guide my mother guides me to follow my dreams and she finds ways for me to prusue my intrest and thats the best way for something like that to be done because then your mother or father is there as a shoulder to cry on when things get rough and then Willow’s Music is great because shes able to have the courage to do so and not be afraid to be her self but some egotistical inattiquite people like yourself dont belive in the power of PARENTING so go and guide your child and help he or she discover there dream :)
