MALIA OBAMA: BRACES, SUMMER CAMP, AND GROWTH SPURT
This summer is turning out to be one of firsts for First daughter Malia Obama. For one, The 12-year-old tween is heading to an overnight summer camp for the first time. In addition, Ms. Malia, who is now 5’9″ tall, just got new braces!
So what does Malia’s dad, President Obama, think about all the changes that his daughter is undergoing?
Growth Spurt..
“Malia just turned 12,” the President said in an interview recently. “She’s my baby. Even though she’s 5′ 9″, she’s still my baby.”
Getting Braces..
“She just got braces, which is good cause she looks like a kid. She’s starting to look too old for me.”
Going Away to Camp..
When asked about his vacation plans recently, President Obama revealed that his older daughter will be spending four weeks at a sleep-away camp:
“We’re going to be trying to figure out where we’re going to be able to take some time over the course of the summer,” Obama said. “But a month of it’s going to be taken up with Malia going away for camp, which she’s never done before.”

woaw cant beleive it,5’9 12yrs.i am in the university and 20yrs but am 5’5.this is so seriouse i bet she is taller than her parents.this girl is really going to be a beautiful woman.beauty and hieght everything be good.i love you girl enjoy your camping. All the best to shasha
She was actually 5’9″ tall before she turned 12. She is so tall and beautiful for her age. I’m jealous, as I am only 5ft tall at 26 yrs old, and my boyfriend, he is only 5’6″ tall. I’ve actually found myself at eye level with 8 year olds before. So I’m used to people young or old being taller than me. Sometimes I like being short, other times I don’t. The times I don’t like it, is when a 9 or 10 year old thinks I’m someone from one of their classes at school! ughhh!

I got the nerve to 5’4 thinking im tall……LOL
I was always the tallest in my class growing up and hated it!!! Now I embrace being tall except when I wear heels that make me over 6 ft tall… sometimes I feel awkard. I hope Malia will embrace being tall, cause it does make you stand out and she will always get attention from that.

I feel you my President. It seems like just the other day my 14 yr old was 5. Now he’s 6 ft tall, a mustache & other stuff I rather not mention.
I looks like a grown man & has older girls checking him out. But he’s always going to be my baby.
At age 12 I was 5″3……Im now 28 and is still 5’3..ha
wow! i knew Malia was tall, but not THAT tall! lol! she passed me a while back then. maybe she hit her growth spurt early. either way, i think she should seriously consider basketball lol! i’m sure she’ll have fun at her away camp. she seems like such a bright, upbeat girl who likes to make new friends. and i’m sure the President and First Lady are excited about their daughter growing into a great young lady. but sad at the same time, because afterall, she’ll always be their little girl.
Man, it’s like, I knew she was tall from seeing pictures of her standing next to her father, but 5’9! Wow. And only 12.. She’ll either grow a few more inches or stop. I think it’s cool that she’s getting to go away to camp, you know, do “normal kid” stuff (although I’m sure there’ll be some high security where ever she ends up). But some other children are gonna be pretty excited to be at camp with Malia Obama!

I cannot believe it. Look at Malia. I am sure she will enjoy camp. I know both President Obama and Mrs. Obama cannot believe how fast she is growing hence his comment.
5’9? she is tall. Im 5’7 and ppl always tell me that I am tall even though I don’t feel tall, I feel average. Anyways, she is pretty and I hope she enjoy camp.
I don’t like that he said ‘she is starting to look too old to me.’ That’s speaks volumes of his apprehension and maybe his fear that his daughter may be growing up too fast, especially since she’s only 12 and taller not only for the average woman, but most women! She’s probably turning PLENTY of heads, and I wouldn’t be surprise if Heads of States in other countries is offering him marriage proposals for his daughter (especially in those countries that marry young brides as young as 12, 13, and 14). That’s enough to scare any father into over-protection of their young daughter.
But it’s not her fault she’s beautiful and tall, so he shouldn’t say that she’s ‘starting to look too old.’ Just tell them old men to back the hell up and STAY AWAY! – because she’s only 12, and she’s gotta lot of growing up to do still, and she’s gotta finish school, college, and all that other stuff before she makes HER CHOICE about whom she wants to date at be with…. in her mid 20′s or later.
Wow, and they say my dd’s are tall (I have a 12 year old that’s 5’7 and a 15 year that’s 5’11) – but she may surpass both of mine!
@nappykat – When I read that comment, I was thinking the president was thinking, “My baby is growing up so fast. Just yesterday, she looked like a little girl, now she’s becoming a woman.” Even the public has noticed how fast she’s grown up. She might’ve started her period too, and that’s another scary milestone so I can imagine, as you stated, the fear he must feel.
The good thing is that she has much protection surrounding her unlike so many other girls her age and she has wonderful parents. Just a thought.

Why?
Some children that are taller then the average child their age look older then they actually are. I think Obama’s comment was fine and accurate. If Malia didn’t have the braces people would think she was 14-16 mostly by her height. With braces she seem more like a pre-teen…i know older teens have braces too, but in my opinion it makes Malia looks young and childish, like she should.
My little sister is going to be 12 this year and she’s very tall too. Although she has a young face people thinks she’s 14 or 15 because of her height. My sister dresses like a non celebrity version of Ming Lee, young and cute, but sometimes in dresses, like the Simmons sister have on, people think she looks silly and can’t understand why she dressed so childish when in fact it is age appropriate. Sometimes height can change how you see a child.
I thought I was the only one who experience that with my daughters clothes LOL!! When we go out to eat I have to ask for a childs menu for her.

Well, Mr. President, your baby girl is growing up and is such a pretty young lady. I can’t believe how fast this happened. Thankfully, she’ll have Secret Service protecting her from the wolves in men’s clothing, so I’m sure that’s a relief for him and the First Lady.
Awww!! That’s how I felt when my baby turned 12. She has braces and so tall. They grow up so fast!!
I went to summer camp as a camper from age 7 to 14 and age 15-20 i worked there…camp is fabulous and i think evey child should experience this at some point in their life. She have a great time.
GOOD FOR MALIA, KNOW SHE IS GONNA LOVE IT, EVEN WITH THE SECURITY. LOVING HER HAIR AND BRACES IN THIS PIC. SHE LOOKS SO HAPPY, BET LITTLE SASHA IS MAD. MAYBE NEXT YEAR SASHA. YEP MR PRESIDENT, SHE WILL ALWAYS BE YOUR BABY.
I was about her height at that age and then I stopped growing. LOL! Malia is a beautiful young woman.
The same thing happened to my daughter. She shot up to 5’9″ at 12 yrs. old and stayed there.
5’9″ at 12 OMG… i’m jealous i’d love to be that tall or close to it (5’7″)
