MELANIE BROWN TALKS REALITY SHOW, MOTHERHOOD & MORE

melanie

In her new reality show It’s A Scary World”, viewers get to see how Melanie Brown balances motherhood with her career. In a new interview with ParentDish, the working mom further explains how she juggles it all.

On what you can expect from her reality show:

It follows me in the studio, the kids and all the drama that goes on between my three girls. I have a 3-year-old, a 6-year-old stepdaughter and an 11-year-old, so you can see the whole dynamics between me and my husband, Stephen (Belafonte), and work and the kids. We don’t have a nanny or an assistant. We’re very hands on and full on and we’ve got a pretty flourishing career, whether it be sorting out my clothing line, Catty Couture, or getting back into the studio to record my CD or my fitness video. It’s everything.

On how she does everything without a nanny:

I do everything while the kids are in school. The kids go to school at 8 and get picked up around 3:30 or 4, so we do a whole juggling act and sometimes we get it a little bit wrong, sometimes we’re late and sometimes me and my husband get stressed out with each other. Though, overall, I’d say we’re the modern blended family. We’re very outspoken, we communicate with each other, we’re fun, we’re sassy, we’re sexy. It’s fun all the way around. It can be stressful at times, but that’s part of a family.

On how she would describe her family life:

It’s very structured. We all sit down for dinner at 6:15. My husband cooks all the time. We’re very open, we communicate a lot. I think the most important thing when you have kids is laying down rules, teaching them to respect the value of money, they have chores, they tidy their rooms.

On whether or not Eddie Murphy now has a relationship with his daughter Angel:

Yeah. They’ve started to see each other a little bit this year, which has been really nice.

Does wonderful, down to earth husband have a job/position or is she taking care of him and his daughter as well.

  • KEEYSHA.J September 17, 2010 at 5:51 pm

I LIKE THE SHOW ITS CUTE.

    Lisa,

Most women who balance their careers don’t make millions of dollars and most haven’t achieved the same level of success as most celebs. Let’s be real, balancing a career with family is not as difficult when you are some secretary at a random law firm compared to being a famous actress/singer/entertainer who is expected to be on call 24/7 and produce certain level of profits (multi-millions) from your endeavors.

i love this show…wonderful husband, angel is the cutest thing ever! phoenix is cool as hell! and she’s right, they are a modern blended family, can’t wait til sunday’s ep!

This reality show it a hot mess, not good at all. I don’t know where I’ve been, didn’t realize Mel’s accent is so strong.

  • MotownBaby September 15, 2010 at 7:13 pm

uhh iwould just like to point out that one of the very first things she said in the first episode of this show was “my daughter’s biological father is Eddy Murphy.”

And there it is, folks, the sole reason this woman has a show.

    • Fashionedbygod33 September 17, 2010 at 11:29 pm

@MotownBaby, I will try and be fair as to what context her comment was made. Unsure of what it can be, but ill. No she didn’t say that.

      • Tara September 21, 2010 at 6:10 pm

haha she totally did! i heard it too…

    • E September 21, 2010 at 9:09 pm

I thought the reason she got a show was because she’s a former Spice Girl. Oh well, I guess the fact that she was the only black member in a international pop group means nothing.

      • MotownBaby September 22, 2010 at 8:03 pm

Of course it means something, or rather it MEANT something, but she isn’t doing anything now! She had a career then, but now her life is just a Z grade celeb life and to be honest, having a career in the Spice Girls doesn’t make you worth watching ten or fifteen years later. with respect, i wouldn’t watch ANY of the spice girls in a reality show (even posh! who also has a famous partner)

  • BrwnSantiLove September 15, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Seen an episode of this it was ok

  • Trisha_B September 15, 2010 at 3:42 pm

I watched the 1st episode, I loved it. The family is fun! Seeing Angel and Mel’s Step daughter play was so cute, they are like best friends. When Angel called Stephen Daddy, I got a big smile. She’s so cute!

The reason these celebs have TV shows are because they get so much negative things written about them that are false and believe it or not, they have feelings too. So by having these shows, it proves whats true and false, see that they are normal & people can see how they really living instead of assuming.

  • LisaLisa September 15, 2010 at 2:35 pm

    I agree Evelina Rae! 100%

  • Mena September 15, 2010 at 12:34 pm

I would love to have a bed like theirs. I don’t know much about her but I wish her well with everything.

    • Kelli September 15, 2010 at 3:44 pm

I have this bed. It is from Arhaus Furniture. It’s called the Devareaux. I don’t really recommend this company because I have had problems. But I will admit that the bed is gorgeous.

  • Lisa September 15, 2010 at 12:05 pm

Her balancing motherhood and a career is no different than any other woman who does it without a nanny. So please explain why hers would be so spectacular that she would need a reality show to show and tell.

    • Mena September 15, 2010 at 1:41 pm

You make a valuable point. I don’t know why but it just seems like everyone is getting a reality show for no reason. I kinda wish we had tv shows like we use to. But I think those days are gone.

      • Lisa September 15, 2010 at 5:29 pm

I miss them too. Networks are making fewer and fewer new sitcoms as the audiences are flocked more towards reality shows. Now, I know some things are unscript on reality shows, but a lot of times the cast is portraying a role that is modified and highly influenced to attract viewers. For an example, trying to live the life of the rich and famous and then you read that they have filed bankruptsy or their home is being foreclosed.

    • EVELINA RAE September 15, 2010 at 1:48 pm

I guess it’s because 90% (made this up) of celebrities have nannies, so life is a little bit more easy when you have 4 to 6 more hands to help you. She’s showing that she’s basic living a “normal” life with a husband and three kids.

  • Fine-N-Mellow September 15, 2010 at 11:34 am

I saw the show.. And I must admit before I saw it I was a bit unsure but I loved it. Very cool down to earth people. The media ripped her apart for that whole Eddie Murphy Mess.. She is doing her thing and proud of it. Gotta Love it !!

  • LisaLisa September 15, 2010 at 11:18 am

This is the BEST reality show out there! It is so real, the way they argue, joke around, promote each other and most of all love each other. They act so much like me and my husband. We joke around and act silly 90% of the time we are with each other. That means we make love 5% of time and that only leaves 5% of the time for us to argue! LOL. Got to love Mel B and Stephen! Haters know where they could go!

    • M'sgirl September 15, 2010 at 11:36 am

I thought it was so funny when Mel went to go pick up the cake and they literally put exactly what he said on it. LOL who does that?

    • gtsa September 15, 2010 at 12:27 pm

Cute tidbit you shared about you and your hubbie. Sounds like you married your best friend and that’s great.

Haven’t seen this show yet. Wouldn’t mind seeing little Ms. Angel getting into stuff with her cute self.

  • M'sgirl September 15, 2010 at 11:06 am

I saw the show it seems pretty good. Her husband is very down to earth.

  • TheOriginalJai September 15, 2010 at 10:43 am

im tired of seeing her…what a way to milk the fame
