NELLY ON HIS DAUGHTER DATING: “I’M DREADING IT”

There comes a time when every parent must ask, “Is my teenager ready to date?”   That time has come for rapper Nelly, who is the father of a teenage daughter.

“As any other father would, I’m dreading it. It’s the worst thing ever![laughs] It’s my baby, I’m ready to put her in a closet until she’s 30. But you try to be realistic about things, you have a talk with her and let her know that she’s priceless, and when you’re priceless don’t put things in your way that may devalue who you are and what you stand for.  That’s what determines how people look at you, so in that sense so far so good.”

Besides teaching his children-he has a daughter Chanell,16, and a son Cornell Haynes III,11,- to think of themselves as “priceless”, the dad of two also teaches his kids to live a healthful life.

“They’re very active, my son plays football, my daughter loves basketball and they both box. They come from a pretty athletic background as far as families go. Sports has been on both sides of their family, whether it’s my side or their mother’s side, so their involvement in sports just came naturally and through the love of it, so that’s what they do.”

The busy dad has an album, Nelly 5.0, which is now in stores.

“It feels good any time you can drop an album, but this album means that I’m still here. I don’t know that I’ve ever left, but some people might think that because of the type of success you might have had on other projects. That’s understandable and how the game goes, so there’s no reason to bitch about it, you just move on. Now it’s like I’m just doing me, I haven’t really changed anything.”

  • Simone November 21, 2010 at 11:32 pm

First thing first all that stuff is SIN and is not of God period.
@UGOGURL- Men degrade women regurdless if the women isnt doing so herself. Some women do need to stand up for themselves by being strong and not allowing them to talk to them the way they do.

    • UGOGURL!!! November 22, 2010 at 10:37 am

That is SOOO TRUE!!! But the thing I guess I don’t understand is IF you know that rappers/musicians do this why would you be so pressed to be in a video or so willing to do ANYTHING to meet them or for them. We make it soo much easier for them to do what they do. You can be sexy without being TRASHY but some of the chicks I see today I just SMH because they look a HOT MESS!! I love people that are different and don’t try to copy others but there is a LIMIT to what people need to see!

  • Simone November 21, 2010 at 11:26 pm

IDK if any of his videos were FYI or not. It is still hypocritical for them to try and teach there children to vaule their life by being something greater then the video girls. It doesnt make any sense for you to treat anyone like that period.

@ Trisha_B When you made your comment, ” I find it funny that “normal” people blame rappers, rockstars, etc for their kids problems, but these rappers have the best kids. Straight A, athletic, smart kids. That should say something.”

Kids are infulenced by those things. of course some parents allow their kids to listen and hear junk like that only if their parents chose to, but the kids have the mind to say I am going to be better than that, i am not doing to degrade women or men like these rappers singers, so on. I can become a doctor and still make a million dollars,I can become a CEO of a company without having to lower my standards for anyone.

  • Simone November 21, 2010 at 11:17 pm

I think thats good that he says that his kids are priceless, but I think that some celeberities need to think about how they treat girls in their videos or have them walking around half naked dont they think those girls are priceless, and should be valued more then a booty shake?? I seriously think its hypocritcal. I honestly dont understand how some he doesnt see any other women the same way he does it his daughter. I am sure he would be very heart broken if his daughter was in a snoop Dog video shaking her butt and all that other stuff.

@plaimean how can u say that, u don’t know nothing about Nelly he probably didn’t want to claim Ashanti because he dosent want everybody in his business. so u have no right to say how kind of father he is.

  • PlainMean November 20, 2010 at 12:24 am

HAHAHAHAHAHA! That’s what I was thinking! Him and Ashanti have been together for years and he still refuses to publicly claim her.

  • linda slain November 19, 2010 at 8:53 pm

I grew up with the some of the guys in Nelly’s St. Lunatics (Murphy Lee & his older brother Quijuan) and knew Nelly to be a nice guy and an invloved parent back then. Of course, this was before Nelly blew up solo. Lots of ppl in the STL say bad things about him–like how he tries to prevent other STL rappers from getting big and spread rumors that Ashanti was pregnant with his kid at one point–but he still seemed amicable the last time we ran into him & his Lunatics pals.

    love nelly

  • Brooklyn November 19, 2010 at 3:17 pm

Very well said Trisha_B! I feel the exact same way…

  • Trisha_B November 19, 2010 at 1:24 pm

She looks a lot older than 16 lol. In the second pic, she looks like Ashanti.

But what he’s doing is parenting! People often let the media raise their kids & having kids think just b/c nelly have girls in his video’s shaking their butts & throwing money, they should do the same. NO! People need to teach their children that what they see in video’s are often false & just for entertainment. Nelly’s kids probably already kno about the tip drill video & kno its for entertainment & don’t mean they gotta do that. I find it funny that “normal” people blame rappers, rockstars, etc for their kids problems, but these rappers have the best kids. Straight A, athletic, smart kids. That should say something.

    • Just Me November 19, 2010 at 4:34 pm

I agree with Trisha_B! His daughter does favor Ashanti and the Tip Drill video was just for entertainment. I wasn’t offended by the video at all because they women were okay with everything that was going on. They were getting paid and no one in the video looked like they were being taken advantage of. Rappers do a lot of acting in the videos. It’s what sells. And because Nelly “acted” that way in the video doesn’t mean that’s the way he treats women in general.

    • Truth Seeker November 20, 2010 at 8:18 am

This is not about how people raise their children. It’s about creating a climate within the culture that denigrates, dehumanizes and over-sexualizes women. If you think raising children well somehow removes the mark that music like this makes on women (particularly young Black women) at large, then you are fooling yourself. It’s evident in the fact that women still make less money on average than men for doing the same job. It’s evident in the fact that street harassment is still a major factor. It’s evident in the fact that sexual assault is still a major crime. It goes far beyond whether or not your children see the video itself or if they get good grades.

    • Trisha_B November 21, 2010 at 5:01 pm

I don’t think Nelly “dehumanize” females. From what I know, Tip Drill is the only video/song that was like od crazy (correct me if i’m wrong). Most of Nelly’s music is about love. I would believe Nelly is a no good rapper if he was linked to numerous women. But he has only been linked w/ Ashanti for years & kelly rowland after they did that one song. He’s clearly treating her right since she still by his side. Nelly is one of the few rappers that stay out of trouble, he’s always in the media for doing a charity, 1 video should not determine how he is as a parent. Him & ashanti doing the beyonce & jay z thing, denying their relationship so their privacy can remain theres

    she has nice teeth! =)

  • REALTALK November 19, 2010 at 10:57 am

nelly must be worried that some man will treat his daughter the way he treats women. wonder if his daughter has seen her dads tip drill video.

    • Truth Seeker November 19, 2010 at 12:11 pm

I was wondering the same thing. And I’d never known he had a daughter. Knowing this and seeing his response to her dating makes the way he portrays women more sad, angering and frustrating.

    • JusMe November 22, 2010 at 3:04 am

      Lol! Whachu’ say!

  • CeCe November 19, 2010 at 10:45 am

Chanell has such a mature face. I would’ve guessed that she was in her early 20′s if I hadn’t read differently.

It’s refreshing to see parents who don’t let their children “date” at such a young age. I’ve seen too many parents who are ok with letting their 10-14 year olds have boyfriends and girlfriends.

  • Keyara November 19, 2010 at 10:34 am

Wow, they look like they are the same age!
