MARIAH CAREY IS HAPPY THAT HER MIXED-RACE BABY WILL BE ACCEPTED
Expectant mom Mariah Carey is elated that her child won’t have to endure the same prejudices that she experienced growing up as a child of Irish-American and African American descent. The singer says that President Obama’s presidency, as well as other important events, has helped to make the world more accepting of mixed-race people.
“Having Obama in office and bringing a child into the world at this point is totally different than me feeling like an outcast when I was growing up and not feeling like it was OK to be ethnically diverse, and I can’t believe that we have arrived at this point within society,” she tells British Pride magazine.
She continues, “I think it’s a little bit easier now because the world has changed just in terms of identifying yourself. That always felt like a strange thing to me as a child, not looking the same as your own mother of father was a very different thing back then.”
The singer and her husband are expecting their first child in spring of next year.
Do you agree with Mariah? Is the world more accepting?

Her child is 75 percent black. So I am confused to how it qualifies has mixed.
I think the hint is in the 75% black… Ergo 25% of her children will be of other ethnicity… Common sense… ? No ?
She was just expressing how it felt growing as a mix child and how it affected her. Color shouldn’t matter anyways as long as their being loved.
The video isn’t showing anymore, but Mariah is. She is definitely preggers and she’s expecting twins! You don’t want to take any chances when carrying around two lives in your belly. I had fraternal twins myself 3 years ago and I’m expecting number 3 in March.
Mariah, please get all of the rest you can now because you are going to need it. The first 2 months are a blur. You are literally a zombie who just lives to feed, change, and care for them and them alone. But I’m sure she can afford to hire some help, unlike me. I need money fast myself. Those beautiful little creatures drain your pockets quicker than you would imagine.
Her children will be 75% black and with a black skin husband will look black. I saw her Christmas show the other night and could not get over the condition of her mother’s teeth. Her absentee dad is the reason she married a black guy. Why is it that 99% per-cent of Black men don’t support their children??
She seens angry at white people. Was it because she had a bad marriage to a white guy.
it is the same way within the Latino culture. If you are not light to bright to white you are considered unworthy. Latinos indoctrinate their children to marry white as much as possible, we have a term for it called, Mejorar La Raza, which means to marry white to improve the race. My parents taught it and so did every Puerto Rican family I know. So many Puerto Rican men won’t look at a Puerto Rican woman unless she is as light as can be because they are looking for the white standard. Black Puerto Ricans are not considered at all, most brown ones aren’t either for the same reason. Puerto Ricans think they have won the winning lottery ticket when they secure a white spouse and other Puerto Ricans encourage that behavior as well.
I understand where she is coming from. How would u feel if people saw u with your child and assumed that u were babysitting or asked questions in fron of the child like “is he adopted” or “what race is the father”. These things still happen when a child doesn’t look like the parent and can affect a child’s self esteem.
On the other hand I think that in the future the mixed kids will actually be seen as superior to kids who look fully black or white etc. Go through a few pages on this site and count how many kids look mixed vs fully black. Many black men in a position of wealth or power these days look for a white or mixed woman to marry and have kids with, making this the new “standard” or a sign of wealth and power. (one of the many reasons I admire the president is that he didn’t fall into the trend). Some people want to turn a blind eye to it but now people are emulating these stars and celebrities, feeling like they have achieved something special if they have a mixed race child. Sad but true.
We are going back in time. More so with our own black race. Our black men seems to want bi-racial women or women of other race more than wanting black women that look black. Take a look at the black celebrities kids. The majority of them of mixed or passed the brown paper bag. It seems that the darker the berry does not sweeten the juice anymore. Mariah comment doesn’t offend me because she is correct. What offend me is that black women that look black is becoming less accepting in this society. I am so happy that President Obama was able to look passed superficial things as skin color and see the beauty and intelligence of the first lady.
Mariah has zero Latino (whatever that means) in her and she made in perfectly clear on the George Lopez Show. By the way, how can you have a part of s culture in you when you do not participate in that culture anyhow, speaking of the so-called latino.
I saw that episode of Lopez Tonight, and she didn’t say she wasn’t part latino. You weren’t paying close attention. She is part latino because from the time her music career began in the 90′s,she has stated that her father is half black and half Venezuelan.
Cubans don’t like Puerto Ricans either, especially the browner skinned ones, so what? Cubans only like to be seen as white when they are white and that is their choice. Castilian Cubans are white and descendant from the Spaniards unlike the Puerto Ricans who were basically slaves of the Spanish.
Mariah Carey’s baby will be more black than half of the people on this site regardless of its complexion.
IN MY BOOK IF YOU ARE 1/2 OF ANYTHING YOU ARE MIXED. OTHER THAN
THIS YOU ARE ONE OR THE OTHER. TOO MANY PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO BE
BLACK. I AM BLACK…NO QUESTIONS…KNOTTY HAIRED AND BROWN-SKINNED
YET WHEN MY SON WHO IS HALF ASIAN WAS ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL AS
A CHILD THEY PUT HIM DOWN AS BEING A “CAUCASION MALE” BECAUSE IN
FLORIDA THERE ARE SO MANY CUBANS THAT DON’T LIKE BEING BLACK AND
PROTEST LOUDLY WHEN ANYTHING BUT “WHITE” IS ENTERED. SOME EVEN
SUE FOR THAT RIGHT. THEY WERE NOT SURE ABOUT ME BECAUSE OF MY
SON. REAL CRAZY. I AM CONSTANTLY HAVING TO TELL HIM BECAUSE OF
SOCIETY PRESSURE TO ALWAYS SAY HE IS BOTH WHEN PEOPLE WANT TO SAY
OTHERWISE. WE TEACH OUR CHILDREN TO BE PROUD OF THEIR ETHNICITY.
From what she said ages ago, Mariah is half Irish, 1/4 venezuelan and 1/4 black.
Isn’t her dad a black man from Venezuela? I think that would make him black, just like being a black American. Just saying.
“Is the world more accepting?”
On the surface, yes, but in reality no. Just look how President Obama has been treated. The main reason there are so many whites against him is because of his color. It doesn’t matter that his mother was Caucasian. The point is his father is black and African. There are racist idiots still out there claiming that his birth certificate is a fraud and are demanding his college transcripts; even though, the requirements for being President are that you must be at least 35 years old and a natural-born citizen. You could be dumb as a doornail and still become president as long as you meet those requirements. McCain wasn’t born on American soil (but on a military base in another country) but the racist idiots have not questioned whether or not he is American.
The fact is biracial kids who appear more white will be treated better by society than those who appear more black. Just look at some of the past comments by a few of the regular posters on this web site.
Until racism and the idea that one group of people are more superior to others just because of their outward appearance are eradicated from this planet, racism will remain an underlying issue. I do believe in God and I do believe that one day He will remove all of the racists from this planet. After that time, we will all move forward as one race: Human.
You are ABSOLUTELY on point!
Yes but his as long as his parents were American citizens then he is American.
*sigh* oh mariah, we off that…
Oh how could she think that? Mariah has been love by the black community since she started her career, and far as everyone see her she is black just mixed with other ethnicity.I did though she has latino in her as well on her father side. That baby will be bless and beautiful,I’m so happy for her and nick, cause she has been through alot over the years.
oh wow
Some of the comments on this board are ignorant…
If generations of your family are from USA and you have light brown or olive complexion, you are not 100% black or African-descended, you have “other” in your background, whether you know about it or not…the US government told your parents what you had to be classified as…if the government tells you to classify as “tangerine”, then that’s what most of you will call yourselves….
not everyone on this site is black American and don’t believe in your “one drop” rule…one black ancestor does not make you black…this is an American rule…Only in the USA, will someone like Mariah Carey be classified as “black”…to the rest of us non-Americans, she is mixed race or “white”…stop trying to push your racist agendas onto the rest of the world just because most of you have drank the kool-aide.
Ursa, how is your self-righteous, non-American behind gonna tell us about our culture. You chastise those who call Mariah “black,” yet in the same breath, you call her “white.” So who are you talking too? If she isn’t black to you, then she isn’t white to me or others. I’ve never considered Mariah as a black woman. Your generalizations make you out to be a hypocrit. Mariah DOES HAVE A BLACK FATHER. I guess you missed it, huh. I hate when foreigners get on here with their little holier than thou attitudes talking smack about Americans, especially American blacks. If you are black, you’re just as much hated as the rest of us. Don’t give us that, “only in America” nonsense. Other countries are just as racist, if not more, but they hide behind the, “we have so many IR couples” and all is well. I call B.S.
Oh, by the way, I suggest you research the “one drop rule” and figure out who the racists are.
Thank you, Terri.

I understand precisely what Mariah meant. I come from a mixed background with a white mom and black dad and it was difficult for them and me growing up back then. Things have changed and people are more open and accepting to the fact that mixed children are an everyday presence in American society. Biracial children today have an easier life and will not be exposed to the level of close-mindedness that existed when Mariah and I were growing up. I am so happy that she was finally able to complete her family. I hope she has a little Mimi to spoil, a girl would be perfect for them.
Her child will be mixed-raced. It may come out being fair, caramel toned, brown, more European looking or more African-American looking.
Genes are crazy.
When anyone mentions race it gets so much attention. I pray for the health and well being of Mariah and Nick’s baby and could careless if its black, brown, or high yello.
yes I know.
Typical Mariah… I always felt she was an attention-whore.
The Declaration of Independence stated that, “All men are created equal,” yet we (black people) needed the Civil Rights Act to further validate the fact that we, indeed, ARE human, thus we are equal. Blacks were, and in many circles, are not considered human. In fact, I believe that things are getting better, but since Obama was elected, there is an anti-black sentiment (sadly, even from many blacks).
Personally, I agree with others that said that mixed-raced (black + other) are always going to be seen as superior from many people, including black people. It’s funny because others imitate us and steal our culture, yet we are still some of the most despised people on the planet. I think many people that are mixed are proud they are something other than BLACK. I’m definitely not saying all.
You’re right about people trying to be like us.They are even trying to look more like us.The tanning craze is becoming more widespread,in addition to breast implants women are also getting butt implants, and they are injecting fat and collagen into their lips to make them fuller. The blonde haired, blue eyed thin girl used to be society’s standard of beauty.Nowadays, the standard of beauty has changed and has become more diverse, thank goodness. Now being tanned and having curves and luscious lips is in.Yet society still views blacks, latinos and other minorities as inferior. It’s very ironic.
Wow I can’t believe you just said that. Then why do black people try to get hair like white people. Think before you speak. No one is trying to look like anyone, if someone wants to improve them selves in any way, let them. Some white people have naturally big butts and some black people have naturally small butts, vice versa, etc. etc.
Back in the day I would have said that some black girls wore blonde wigs because they wanted to look like white girls. And unfortunately there are still some black girls that feel that way today. But now that the definition of beauty has expanded to include women of all colors, shapes and sizes,I don’t think that is the main reason black girls wear blond wigs anymore.Besides, black women aren’t wearing only blond wigs these days. They are wearing wigs, weaves, and extensions in all the colors of the rainbow, red, orange, yellow, blue, green, pink, and so on.They also wear mohawks and other crazy hairstyles. These days they are going for the edgy look, not the white girl look.
I have no problem with women enhancing their bodies with plastic surgery if they’re old enough to understand everything involved, they don’t go overboard, and they’re doing it for the right reasons. But some of them aren’t doing it for the right reasons. Some of them are having surgery because they have low self esteem and low body image. That’s why they have to be evaluated by a psychologist before they are approved for surgery.Women don’t need a psychological evaluation to change the style or color of their hair. There is a big difference between the two.
Yeah, some black people do try to get hair like white people. However, blacks are very diverse so many have hair like white women and it’s not fake.
Many blacks have been very conditioned to be something other than themselves.
Exactly!
Honestly I don’t think she’s even defining the fact that oh no-ones gonna tell my baby’s black. She’s addressing the fact that her child won’t have to go through whatever she did as a kid cause he/she WONT look like her, the fact that it doesn’t matter who the parents are anymore.
WHAT REALLY MATTERS IS THAT THE BABY IS BORN HEALTHY BOTH IN A MENTAL AND PHYSICAL SENSE.
This new generation will be mainly populated with mix race children so her child will fine…. Practically all the Celebrities, NFL, NBA have made it the new trend. I rarely see any non-mixed kids in this day and age.
Keverno said, “This new generation will be mainly populated with mix race children?” Where do you get this information? I was under the understanding that most people marry within their race, and even though IR couples are more numerous than ever before, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the new generation will be mostly mixed-raced.
If you are basing that on celebrities, sports figures, and such, they are not the majority of the population. Also, it was my understanding that most NBA players are married to black women?
Sorry to say but Mariah’s and Nick Cannon’s child will be recognized as African American/Black. Mariah may have experienced that growing up but she is and will always be a BLACK woman just like Alicia Keys & Halle Berry. What is so wrong with being a woman of color. SMH
What is wrong with her being a multiracial [directly] individual?
Also Anyone that isn’t fair skinned is a person of color.
@BrwnSantiLove – I don’t think people have a problem with it. It’s a way of life. I think people act as thought being mixed/multiracial or whatever title we want is being something other than human. We talk about them like they have some special annointing on them simply because they are mixed. I look at all people the same. I don’t care what race they are. No race is better than the next, so if one is mixed, bi, tri, whatever, I see them the same. There is a segment of society that uplifts them to “superior” status, especially if they are black and “other.” Why do you think so many people want mixed children? Actually, in my town, there is a very high population of black men/white women and it’s the white girls that want mixed children.
I’m a black woman and I’m proud of that and will raise my black children to be proud of their blackness as well. It seems as though we are the one of the only races that doesn’t salute our blackness. We have been made to feel ashamed of it unless, of course, we got some other ethnicity running through our veins. Then we hoop and holla about how non-black we are.
We live in a very racially oriented world, and until we are all considered equal, this is the way I think it’s always going to be. It’s better, but not where it should be.
Yeah I see that.
That is only true if the person is ignorant. My children are recognized as biracial and they are proud of it.
We are a transracial family living in a predominantly white area and we have not encountered any problems. My kids are very well accepted and get invited to all b-day parite and events.
When we lived in a more diverse area, the problems came from the black community. They were either teased for being biracial or praised for being fair and having “good” hair. We had to hurry up and get them out of that enviroment.
I agree with Mariah that things are much better now in terms of civil rights, than they were in the 60′s and 70′s when she and her siblings were growing up.Don’t get me wrong, there is still a long way to go in terms of race relations.Unfair racial and immigrant profiling, the Jena Six case, and hate crimes and such are evidence that there are still hurdles for us to overcome and more work to be done. But the fact that we have a black/biracial president shows that we have come a long way,and gives us hope that things will continue to change and that there will be more victories in the battle for equality.
I think her child will be more accepted because he/she will likely look more like a black person than mixed. Could be wrong I have a little girl at my church that looks mixed althought it’s her grandfather that is the one that mixed.
I don’t think that people are thinking differently due to the President however, especially since society is more on his being black and tend to neglect the fact that he is of mixed race. I think in general there are more mixed race kids and in that sense people are responding better but due to the President Nah.
I know right!! LOL!!
Mariah uses the expression “a little bit easier” so she is not ignoring the fact that there are huge problems still there. The biases come from all ethnic groups. However the fact that you have Obama says that there has been improvement and I think that is the point she is making
thank goodness someone speaking sense thankyou.
Hey, Mariah! (tapping her on the shoulder). There is no guarantee your baby will be more accepted, sweetie. He/she will be accepted by some, and not by others. Racism is still a very big part of our world, and, like it or not, there are many people who consider mixed-raced children, “black” whether people like it or not. I’m not saying that’s how YOU have to identify the child, but the reality is that many will see him/her as black, and will treat him/her accordingly. If anyone wants to argue that point, may I point to our dear president, Barack Obama. EVERYONE knows he has a white mother, but as we could obviously see before, during, and after the elections how this man has been treated, there is no denying that some people don’t care if he is biracial even though HE identifies himself as being black. Many hate him because of his race. He’s still a n*gger to them. Even though things are changing, they aren’t where we’d like them to be as far as race relations.
The child will have a problem only if it is a girl. Boys of mixed raced can get by, just look at Kendra’s husband. He looks totally black. But if he was a girl he would have corse hair and look more mixed and confused. You could at least keep a boy’s hair cut low and no one would ever know he is mixed.
You sound like she should try and disguise that her child is mixed race you sound very dumb !!!!!
I think she’s justified in her opinion on this issue b/c the world made it a very hurtful and confused issue for her and her siblings, and many other children, sadly.
What should be addressed is the fact that this is still a topic at all. Society is a brain-washed people that still thinks there are pure “races” that can be “mixed”. This is what governments want us to believe so that the modern day caste system can continue to secure limited resources for the “upper” strata.
Why can’t we just see people & not their social “benefit” color?
I guess as long their is benefit to being certain colors, people will be “race” zombies.
Lol! Oh Mariah “the tragic mulatto”. womp! Genes are a funny thing, but most likely, her child wont look as mixed as even she did.
I bet she thinks she’s the only woman ever giving birth in the world.
I was thinking the same thing….Im really tired of hearing bout her being pregnant everyday…
I highly doubt this child will be considered mixed-race. It will 75% black. Most black americans are only 75 % black in the first place. The baby will almost as black as Nick is, therefore it’s black.
co-sign my mothers grandfather was white and her grandmother was black and indian.
@ oh please i was about to say the same thing. That baby is not mixed raced.
Miriah is half black, she just look high yella. Many black people look that way and they are not even mixed or have mixed parents. People are confused.
Yes Idk what mariah is on that baby will be black and by the looks of her as a child there will be no question she is tripping.
Technically that choice is made by who has the more dominate DNA. The baby and or babies could look just like Mariah’s mom. For example I had a friend whos father is very fair and her mom is very brown. All of the female children in the family are fair like the father, but the son is brown like the mom. Well, the son had a child with a dark skin female but the little girl is fair JUST like the grandfather. I have another friend who is white and has 2 biracial children with dark skin black men. One child looks hispanic the other looks white. Its really a crap shoot, whatever genes are more dominate might come out in Mariah’s children or the next generation.
But I understand exactly what your saying, as black americans our history is so diverse and the off record no one can really say they are one hundred percent black. We just play to the image we project. Interesting comments on this post great input BCKers.

Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand what your saying and where your coming from. Ineresting comments on this post good job BCKers.=)
The world is more accepting. But somehow, I don’t think she need worry about her child with Nick. The Obama girls also have a white grandmother and they look and i.d. as black and bet its a non-issue. Think it is more of an issue, if at all, when a parent is of another race than those who are multiracial down the line.
Some people are more accepted to mix-raced people and some are not. There nothing wrong with her having her own opinion, but it is not guarantee that their child will be accepted.
Oh Lord…
WTF?! SERIOUSLY?!
Are we going backwards in the race game on purpose?! This whole my half and half baby is going to look better than yours, or great hair, or my oreo baby is OLD!
Quite frankly, I can’t speak for everybody but I am 24 yrs old and find this really redundant.
This is ridiculous BCK..smdh!
If i may ask, what are you really upset about. I take no offense to this article. Why is BCK being blamed? IF anything, Mariah is just expressing her opinion and saying that the world is more tolerant. Which is very true. I don’t get what you mean by “half this etc..”?
Im mad at the fact that her thinking is very close-minded.
We should be over the race and color our children are going to be, we need to teach our children the IMPACT they could possibly make on the world, not because they are black, white, yellow, or purple..
I understand you anger, but it shouldn’t be towards Mariah and or BCK it should be towards socitey. The fact that in recent times we have more inter racial children around dosen’t mean they are always accepted at first within any community. I only know this because my husband is multiracial and I have seen people become very frustrated because they can not categorized what he, his sister, or her child are racially and we live in a multi ethic community. I don’t wish racisim to be experienced by anyone but it does to ALL races. This topic is still a heated issue today, even though it should be considred ignorant and old. I agree which Chickie Boo that all that really matters is the baby and or babies are born healthy and happy. Congrats Mariah and Nick can’t wait to see the cutie and or cuties =)
Now Lily Lovely you are correct unfortunately Keisha Cole, Mariah, Alicia Keys, Faith Evans, Halle, and Lauren London though all have one white parent will always be viewed by society as black women. Because sterotypically they don’t “look white”. As a society we have to accept that within ALL races their are different complexions, hair textures, and eye colors and that no matter what that doesn’t change your race. To clarify,I only say unfortunately because I feel all people should be able to identify with themselves as a whole and be proud.
O so sad who is focusing on the race of any child just pray that you have a healthy baby and move on!
i don’t think she said anything about her baby looking better than anyone else. sounds like your own insecurity about the issue peaking out…. very strange that THAT is what you gain from what you read. It said nothin of the sort.
As far as my statement goes it is my own opinion. I gathered that information from all the other couples that are mixed and have articles on here.
I have no insecurities, I have no children. When I do they willl not have to worry about being accepted by the worl and society because acception starts at home and should be known at home. Who cares what others think?!
That saying of Who Care What Others Think is so played out. It works when you’re someone is making fun of you not having the lastest tennis shoes, it works when someone is making fun of yo because they don’t like your hairstyle. It doesn’t work when it comes to exception. We as human beings thrive off of human contact, it is one of our basic needs so people not wanting to be in contact with us because of the way we look or categorize ourselves or because of the way they categorize us, is not something can be easily shrugged off.
