Making her debut in 1979, Teena Marie’s musical eclecticism took soul music in new directions, and earned her a spot in the hearts of R&B purists. Since her passing in late 2010, fans around the world have expressed the impact of Teena’s inspirational career and the importance of her brilliant songwriting. R&B singer, Lalah Hathaway; legendary keyboardist George Duke; singer-songwriter Shanice Wilson; music director Doug Grigsby, R&B writer Scott Galloway and Teena Marie’s daughter Alia Rose will discuss the incredible talent and trailblazing career of the acclaimed “Lady Tee.” Urban Buzz editor Kevin Fleming will moderate the panel discussion. Special performances by Hathaway and Wilson and other special guests will follow.

Teena Marie passed away on December 26th, 2010, a day after her only daughter Alia’s 19th birthday.

I was at the tribute and Alia is really funny. She Alia said that one minute Teena would be a really sweet person that you could talk to and then all of a sudden she would flip on you. Also, Alia said that she would crack jokes on her mom and call her mammie. Alia also said that everyday she would wake up Teena would be playing her music in the car she would playing her music and it would drive her crazy. However, she misses everything now. Alia said that the event made her sad; but she appears to be coming along. It made me feel good to hear some of the stories of our beloved Teena. It is still so unreal.

Wow!! I know Teena is sooooo proud. What an amazingly strong young woman. She was a believer in Christ and this shows that he wouldn’t place more on you than you can bear.

She looks so much like Teena. Hoping that her dad(who is/was a postman and lives in California) is there for her. And hope all of Teena’s Godkids are doing good as well. Maya Rudoph is one of them.

Alia Rose glad she is holding up. I believe that man next to her is her father. I saw a picture of him on her twitter b4. Not sure, but it looks like him but i could be wrong

It’s good to see Alia Rose keeping her beloved mother’s memory alive. I hope she’s holding up and getting all of the love and support she needs…I know the pain of losing a loved one and my heart truly goes out to her.

Teena Marie. Funny how I was just thinking about her the other day. I remember when she first hit the scene. I’m dating myself for real. So many of our true, talented musicians are moving on to bigger and better places. Thanksfully, we have youtube to see her performances that keep them alive.

I think about how Alia Rose must feel. She was Teena’s first and only. I’m sure she misses her mother so much.

    Many blessings to Alia Rose.

I still can’t believe Teena is gone. I think about her all the time, but appreciate the legacy she left behind. Alia Rose seems to be handling it as best as one could during this time. At least there was a tribute for her because our musical icons go on with little to no fanfare. It’s a shame.

I still cant beieve Lady T is gone too.

  • C-Sassy February 25, 2011 at 5:04 pm

She is so pretty. I still feel bad about her mother death. Even at her age, you still need your mama.

  • Remy February 25, 2011 at 3:50 pm

I honestly can’t imagine what Alia’s going through. We’re the same age and I get chills just thinking about it :(

I was stunned to hear of Teena Marie’s sudden death and I was so saddened by it. I truly love and still jam to her music; they are classics. I lost my mom just before I turned 40 so I know losing her mother at such a young age is even more difficult. I pray she has loving family and friends who help her get through this and as she continues to grow into womanhood.

    So sad.

I know it must be hard for her. Does anyone know who her dad was?

I’m so glad to see Alia Rose smiling again, I know this had to be very tough.

LisaLisa….wow that was tacky & tired.

  • Kinereth February 25, 2011 at 1:50 pm

Faith Evans also performed at this event. She sang “Ooh La La”.

Thank you for posting! I miss Teena Marie so much. I still can’t believe she’s gone. But she’s left a wonderful legacy in her music and beautiful daughter. It’s great to see Alia Rose. These past two months must have been extremely difficult for her. I’m glad to see at least she’s smiling again. I wish the music industry had given Lady T more recognition. She was ahead of her time. I’m happy that the Grammy Museum has honored her memory. I will remember her forever.

Kinereth, I couldn’t agree more. We share the same sentiments.

Also, I can see Teena in Alia Rose. I have heard that her voice is similar. If so, what a gift.
