SOLANGE AND SON TEAM UP FOR JAPANESE RELIEF EFFORT

Singer Solange Knowles and her six-year-old son Julez have teamed up to raise money for victims of the earthquake and tsunami devastation in Japan. The duo were inspired to donate to the Japanese relief effort after watching the devastation of the earthquake unfold on television.

She tells Wenn, “Me and my son, we are on the west coast still, we woke up on the morning of the earthquake and tsunami, at around six o’ clock that morning, and were watching it on television. He was very affected by it and asked a lot of questions and we decided we wanted to do something together to help. So we actually are in the process, we’re almost done… He did a watercolor of the Japanese flag and we’re making shirts and totes [bags] and note cards and we’re gonna sell them locally here and donate the proceeds. We’re really excited about it.”

So far, the mom and son duo have sold a few tshirts, which they will donate to Peace Winds.org

I love the fact that she is teaching him no matter shape, size, color, religion, race or monetary status you treat people as you would want to be treated….two thumbs up for Solange..Love it !!!!

  • Pisces March 26, 2011 at 11:06 am

Ummm, Solange is wealthy in her own right, she doesn’t have to work. She appears to be a full time Mom.

  • Pisces March 26, 2011 at 10:59 am

Solange and Beyonce have done past product promotions in Japan, so Solange is probably motivated to help that country based on her personal experience with citizens of Japan.

  • Pisces March 26, 2011 at 10:51 am

Umm, Solange probably doesn’t have to do much to make a living since her net worth is $5 million. In addition, she has a wealthy mother, father, sister and brother-in-law that can help her if need be.

She seems to be busy being a good, full time Mom to her son. You know, some women can still afford to do just that.

nice natural pic…i think thats really good of her and at the end of the day its her money to spend how she pleases.

  • Shay March 24, 2011 at 10:43 pm

If sorry but maybe u should do more research. 1 it will take 12 trillion dollars to repair the damage. Sorry but 3rd richest or not they don’t have 12 trillion dollars. 2nd Japan gave the most money to America to help out after Katrina. 3rd “our people”? Americans? Their are Japanese Americans who lost family. R u gonna tell them “Yea ur american but umm we still not going to help your family”. Honestly as Black folks we want to receive help and respect, well we got to give it too. Help Japan, Help the human population.

    • Pisces March 24, 2011 at 10:53 pm

Agree, quite a few Americans, Caucasian, African American and others were living in Japan teaching, working for the military and doing other jobs. The earthquake/tsunami killed some of them, too.

The stock markets are affected drastically by the Japanese disaster.

  • Nik NIk March 24, 2011 at 10:32 pm

lil daddy is sooooooooooooo big and handsome

  • Pisces March 24, 2011 at 8:21 pm

This is nice. So many people in dire straits in Japan in spite of it being a wealthy country. The point is we are a wealthy country that wasn’t ready to help when Katrina struck.

Those houses floating in Japan looked just as underdeveloped and primitive as the shanties in Haiti. You didn’t see a bunch of mansions floating and getting banged up out in the Pacific.

One poor husband said his wife couldn’t even get sanitary napkins to change herself. She had to keep wearing the one she had on at the time. We’re talking basic needs. The food, crops animals are contaminated. Did you see the ocean rolling inland over the farmlands? Sad.

I just cry when I see the babies and children suffering in Japan just like when it happened in Haiti and New Orleans. I’m sure there are many orphans there now as a result of the devastation.

I’m going to donate and continue to pray for my fellow human beings on the planet.

    • Daniella March 24, 2011 at 9:36 pm

I totally agree with you, Pisces. I think what Solange is doing is fantastic & she’s teaching her son to give to others who are either or less fortunate or have lost everything. That is ALWAYS a great lesson to teach to any child, no matter the cause.

The Japanese have been one of our most loyal allies & friends for the past seven decades & they have also been a very giving people to the numerous diseasters that have occurred in recent years. And although it’s a sidenote to the humanitarian crisis that is occurring there, our own economy depends very heavily on the Japanese economy, so of course it is very helpful to America as a whole that Japan recovers from this catastrophe. We live in the era of massive globalization, and if a country like Japan gets crippled, you can bet that it’s going to affect the U.S. in a very painful way. Especially in regards to technology & nuclear energy now….

But aside from that, the Japanese are human beings. Just because they’re rich does not make the devastated people of Japan any less worthy of our help. Especially considering they’re our staunchest ally & longtime friend.

I will donate to Japan because I feel pain for my fellow human beings & I have Japanese college friends who were terrified for days while waiting to hear back from their relatives in Ibaraki prefecture. When something bad happens to your friend, you stand by their side & help them recover from the tragedy.

      • Pisces March 24, 2011 at 10:01 pm

I agree with you Daniella and thank you for your economic, political and most importantly humanitarian insight about the Japaneses disaster.

What predominately stands out for me are the images of the mothers feeding their babies rice balls, standing on line at what few stores are still open to get basic life necessities and babies and children sleeping in the crowded shelters. Also spinach and milk being contaminated with deadly radiation.

Human suffering is human suffering wherever it is and females of our species should demonstrate more compassion, especially when it involves the lives of future generations.

I’m so happy that BCK featured this article about Solange and Juelz efforts as a mother and child reaching out to help other mothers and children.

You are right, we probably really underestimate our dependency on goods and services imported to the U.S…beyond parts for automobiles.

        God Bless you Daniella.

        • Pisces March 24, 2011 at 10:13 pm

Also, God Bless BCK for putting children and babies as their focus first, even children of other colors (which Japanese/Asian kids are).

Much love to BCK for its global consciousness .

        • Daniella March 24, 2011 at 10:26 pm

Sorry if I rambled a little bit, that’s my nerdy college-self coming out. But I totally agree with you about the mothers & their babies. It doesn’t matter to me what country a suffering child is from, be it the Congo or Cambodia or Japan, it always wrenches at my heart. A child is a child & I don’t understand how any woman could not feel pain at the sight of those poor children. Or extreme joy at the sight of that beautiful baby girl they found in the rubble of Ishinomaki.

Lets just hope that those brave engineers in Fukushima can stop any more diseasters from occurring. What courageous souls those men and women are, too bad there aren’t more in the world like them.

          • Pisces March 24, 2011 at 10:41 pm

You didn’t ramble, Daniella you are on point. Thank you for reminding me of that miracle baby girl that did survive the tsunami. I hope she had surviving relatives to claim her and that she lives to tell her gran kids about what happened to her.

      • tanja March 25, 2011 at 7:03 am

thank You Pisces and Daniella for those beautiful and thoughtfull messages

    • MY OPINION March 25, 2011 at 8:11 am

I AGREE THAT THE (US) DID NOT DO A GOOD JOB OF HELPING WITH KATRINA. BUT DOES THAT MEAN, DON’T HELP ANYBODY ELSE. AS SOMEONE ELSE POINTED OUT, AMERICA WAS ILL PREPARED FOR A DISASTER LIKE KATRINA. BUT THERE HAS BEEN SOME, HELP THERE. I THINK ALL PEOPLE, WHETHER RICH, POOR OR WHATEVER, AFTER A DISASTER SHOULD RECIEVE HELP. IF PEOPLE DID NOT HELP THEN WE WOULD COMPLAIN ABOUT THAT. SOMETIMES, WE HAVE TO STEP BACK FROM A SITUATON AND LET GO OF THE NEGATIVE FEELINGS AND HELP OUR FELLOW MAN. AND WHAT TIGER BLOOD IS FEELING ABOUT THE US, MAYBE HOW SOMEONE IN JAPAN IS FEELING ABOUT THEIR GOVERNMENT. AND WILL BE ESPECIALLY GRATEFUL FOR THE HELP THE US GOVERNMENT IS GIVING THEM. HELPING SOMEONE IN JAPAN IS STILL HELPING SOMEBODY. DON’T LET HOW OUR GOVERNMENT HANDLED KATRINA, TAINT YOUR PERCEPTION OF HELPING THOSE WHO ARE NEED. WE ALL NEED HELP FROM TIME TO TIME. EXCUSE ANY TYPOS. (IMHO)

      • Pisces March 25, 2011 at 12:23 pm

Agree. Japenese people are being very vocal about their own governments handling of the disaster, especially relating to warnings about the radiation.

  • ski March 24, 2011 at 7:25 pm

It is no need for the negative comments,if she wants her son to help the people of Japan than so be it.

  • Billie'sMom (aka Amy) March 24, 2011 at 6:26 pm

With all due respect to the newer “Amy”, I am changing my screen name so that there is no confusion, lol. Btw, although I think that anyone in need should be given a helping hand, I don’t think that there is any comparison to Japan and Haiti’s economic status! Some people need more help than others… the people of New Orlean’s for instance.

  • whateva March 24, 2011 at 5:35 pm

I agree with most of you up here. yeah, it’s good that she’s teaching him to give and help others. But she should be teaching him to help his own FIRST. That’s like me feeding my neighbor and my sister is starving. My sister will eat first. People are dying in Haiti to this day and New Orleans still hasnt recovered from their natural disaster. Nothing wrong with helping out but why not make a watercolor of the Haitian flag and put it on some t-shirts and totes and sell them. just saying

btw her son is sooooo cute

  • Fashionedbygod33 March 24, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Tiger Blood and Plaindumb same person?

    • gtsa March 24, 2011 at 5:29 pm

Fashioned, I was a little confused here too. I get whiplash with the way names changes around here. Sometimes I wonder if BCK will start verifying ids and stagnant user names because its been rampant of late.

      • Billie'sMom (aka Amy) March 24, 2011 at 6:29 pm

That’s toooo funny! I just changed my name because I noticed a (presumed) new “Amy” commenting. Didn’t want her getting blasted for some of the comments that I’ve said in the past, lol.

      • Fashionedbygod33 March 24, 2011 at 6:51 pm

Hey gtsa, exactly. I know some people like to get silly and create other names to get people riled up, but sometimes you can kind of see similarities in writing styles, but this one is a major contrast provided they are the same person. I don’t know.

      • Pisces March 24, 2011 at 9:27 pm

I agree with you, gtsa. I hope BCK does something about it, too, because it is really a distraction and turn off. It would be another thing, too if most of the comments weren’t so mean and negative.

        • gtsa March 25, 2011 at 11:08 am

Hey there! I enjoyed reading your post further down. Really insightful. I have been rendered near speechless on the Japan matter, the magnitude of this tragedy nearly takes my breath away. With the radiation leak, it appers to be far from over.

I am mixed about BCK implementing a fixed id or username. I think some people change their usernames for non-suspect reasons like realizing another poster shares the same or that its maybe not the best idea to use your real name (or even nickname in some cases), boredom, etc. Then their are those changing their usernames for clearly suspect reasons like harassment, bullying and trolling.

I am debating whether to change mine out of boredom. You do kinda develop an id or “face” behind your username after a while and I think that helps to make a public blog like BCK feel more like a forum or “community” and a little less transient and random. My two cents on it.

          • Pisces March 25, 2011 at 12:21 pm

Hi gtsa. I agree with you further more 100% about the user names. I still love your always balanced insight and style of commenting. So balanced and intelligent.

  • gtsa March 24, 2011 at 4:46 pm

That is such a pretty pic of Solange and her son. She looks so much like her big sis here. Its funny, I was just thinking I hadn’t seen Julez on BCK for a minute just the other day. Though I think Julez is a little young to have been exposed to the tragic events in Japan its been in the media so much that its kinda hard to shield your children. Great she is teaching him early about caring about your fellow man.

    • tanja March 25, 2011 at 5:46 am

I personally dont think Julez is too young….Of course he wont understand it all…but he understands something really bad happened and help is needed….and so does my babygirl Kandice who turned 5 two weeks ago. My mom did the same with my brother and I…she didnt keep those things away from us….and I think it benefitted us….(sorry for some misspellings…I am German and sometimes have troubles with spelling..lol)

      • gtsa March 25, 2011 at 11:30 am

Tanja, you’ve done just fine in explaining your view. I am US born and bred and I make similar errors and typos from time to time, it happens, lol. I still think it really depends on the age and temperament of the child, but I do concede that its impossible and probably fruitless to try to shield your child from everything. You’re gonna have to have those tough talks at times, speaking from experience.

        • tanja March 25, 2011 at 4:37 pm

it´s true…it depends on the child…I was watching the news with kandice and she asked me why it´s shaking, why there was water….I told her…she said these were poor people now…then a day later when broadcasting switched from catastrophes 1 (earthquake) and 2( tsunami) to catastrophe number 3 (nuclear plant fukushima)…she asked me why they are showing this….now I tried my best….in the end I told her that it´s a very dangerous thing, because I did not know how to tell a 5-year-old what a nuclear meltdown is…almost impossible to tell to a grown up

    • Sheyla March 25, 2011 at 9:02 am

I was thinking the same thing she looks just like her big sis Kelly right here! No denying now!

      • gtsa March 25, 2011 at 11:11 am

I think she looks just like Beyonce without all the makeup. Nice and natual.

  • Tiana March 24, 2011 at 4:46 pm

Smh at the negative comments in here. Good for Solange for teaching little Julez the importance of helping and giving to others in need at his young age. I don’t understand how something positive can get so many negative responses. And the comments & comparisons about Solonage’s sister are unnecessary and irrelevant. Solange is Solange and Beyonce is Beyonce. They sisters, but they are individuals, so obviously they are different. This is no shocker.

Side note: I can’t believe Julez is 6 years old already. Where did time go?

    • KekeB March 25, 2011 at 9:26 am

      I applaud this comment

  • Amy March 24, 2011 at 3:54 pm

People are you serious? Japan just went through a major disaster and your being that selfish of helping these people, who has lost everything? If there is any country who deserves a helping hand is Japan.Almost everything we wear, eat, drive comes for Japan and china. Now what I was mad is the fact Haiti got more help and money from The United States then New Orleans.Yes haiti is poor but New Orleans is our own and we should have taken better care of them than would we did. Those same billion dollars that went to haiti could have went to New Orleans and rebuild the city. There are still places there that has not been fix or done over.So yes I believe we gave too much to haiti, and as much as we gave to them we need to do the same for Japan.

  • Fashionedbygod33 March 24, 2011 at 3:52 pm

@ Tiger Blood, I am so sorry. I can only imagine that type of devastation. You are not the only person that feels the way you do with respect to the response people of New Orleans received. We have a great deal of our own issues going on here, so I understand the frustration. I really do.

  • Toni March 24, 2011 at 3:41 pm

That’s definitely the right name for you because your comment sounds plain dumb. You sound like an ignorant hater. If helping others is a way she wants to get attention, then that’s the humanitarian way to do it. Just because she looks better than you that doesn’t mean you should attack her personally. Your comment was a big FAIL!

    • Toni March 24, 2011 at 4:14 pm

For someone who says they experienced losing a loved one in Katrina, you shouldn’t be showing so much hate. It’s hard to sympathize with you.

  • Fashionedbygod33 March 24, 2011 at 3:39 pm

That’s awesome. Good for her and a seemingly good role model for her son. She appears to be a great mom.

  • GUYANESE CHIC March 24, 2011 at 3:10 pm

it doesnt matter japan is rich or not if u see ur neighbor down you should help not kick them while their. alot of country need help are in need of it too but that doesnt mean we should turn our backs on the rich one. the days are getting shorter its time we stop this hate and come together as one.

    • Vee March 24, 2011 at 3:35 pm

I agree. How would you all feel if people said that about the folks who suffered during Katrina? And I don’t want to hear that’s different because they were poor. They were in the US, one of the riches countries in the world. I donated to Japan like I would Haiti. Japan’s a wealthy country but many of the folks who are suffering as a result of this disaster are not and they lost everything. It’s about helping those in need right now, plain and simple.

I digress, Solange looks pretty and her son is a cutie pie. I’m glad she’s teaching him to help others.

      • Fashionedbygod33 March 24, 2011 at 3:41 pm

        Valid points as well.

      • TIGER BLOOD March 24, 2011 at 3:42 pm

How would we feel if people said that about the Katrina people??? You kidding me right? The U.S (yes one of the richest counttries in the world) did NOTHING for them! To this day we are still suffering and homeless down here. So don’t give me that B.S bc I don’t want to here it. The U.S couldv’e done more for us and they didn’t but yet we have to watch everyone outside of our country get help with the quickness. That is what hurts us New Orleanians. Yes people, we are still suffering in New Orleans. Give me a break!

        • Vee March 24, 2011 at 3:58 pm

Give me a break and you totally missed my point…lol.

      • Vee March 24, 2011 at 4:09 pm

I agree that the US government treated the people of Katrina shabbily however, the point I was trying to make was, if you, for example, told anyone around the world about the people of Katrina and they said, “So what? Those people are in the US, one of the richest countries in the world, they don’t need anyone’s help.” People would be very upset. Not for nothing, the Japanese government isn’t doing such a hot job helping their people get out of this mess either.

Sorry for your loss TIGER BLOOD or plaindumb. Same person?

  • ANITA March 24, 2011 at 2:41 pm

I get what you ae saying but JAPAN are currently suffering through A LOT of crisis. So of course all should help Japan right now until it can stand on its own 2 feet. People are dying by the thousands due to the Quake Tsunami and now everything is getting affected by radiation.

    • Fashionedbygod33 March 24, 2011 at 3:40 pm

@ Tiger Blood, I can understand this.

    • gtsa March 24, 2011 at 5:19 pm

@ Tiger Blood. I am so sorry to hear of your losses. I wish there was more to go around for the all the hurt and need in the world.

    • tanja March 25, 2011 at 5:39 am

TigerBlood….I am very very sorry for Your loss and what You had and still have to go through!!! And I do agree…..donations and help shouldn´t only go to foreign countries, it´s a shame how the government dealt with Kathrina.

I disagree with not helping Japan now tho….not directed at You Tiger Blood or anyone in particular….but what Japan was hit with….is unprecedented…..earthquake, tsunami and radiation….this is worse than tschernobyl…..the water is already …the bottled water is already rare…..foods are contanimated….and things will only get worse….Of course Japan is a rich and powerfull country…but they need our help, too…..If it was “just” the earthquake….Japan prob wouldnt need help….they build up Kobe in the 90s all by themselves too…..but what is happening right now is almost surreal….they need water, food, medication and on and on…..so helping Japan right now is very, very important.

Again…my post was not meant to hurt anybody here…I just read comments like “Japan doesnt need help” all the time and I think it is not right.

Anyhow, may God bless You beautiful people

  • antigonie March 24, 2011 at 2:27 pm

Solange appears to be the polar opposite of her sister, yet their relationship is so laid back, and not like a photo op every time they’re seen together.

  • Camie March 24, 2011 at 2:06 pm

That’s good she is teaching him at an early age to help others.

  • keverno March 24, 2011 at 1:43 pm

I love Solange…. she appears to be more down to earth then Bey. That is so cool that her and Julez is going to donate the proceeds from there sales to Japan is soooo awesome.

  • MRSREYNOLDS March 24, 2011 at 1:26 pm

    such a naturally beautiful picture!

  • janea March 24, 2011 at 1:18 pm
