MALIA AND SASHA TO VISIT SOUTH AFRICA
First daughters Malia and Sasha Obama are headed to Cape Town, South Africa, and Gaborone, Botswana, this month. The sisters will be accompanied by their mom First Lady Michelle Obama and their grandma Marian Robinson.
Obama’s office said the trip will be a continuation of the first lady’s effort to encourage young people at home and abroad, a traditional first-lady project which Obama has taken up with zeal. World travel also is traditional for first ladies: Obama has already picked up a slew of stamps in her passport, with visits to Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, India and Mexico, not to mention the glittering capitals of Europe. Obama hopes to underscore America’s continuing interest in the success of African nations and strengthen historic connections between Americans and Africans.

Dang Malia shot right up!

They’re going to love Cape Town, pity they’re not coming to Joburg, the true Rainbow heart of South Africa.
Why do you all argue with unimformed people. Everybody wants to act “brand new” when the Obamas move into the White House. All of a sudden folks want to act like First Families don’t need to travel outside the U.S. News flash people your tax dollars pay for the lights in the White House, so do the Obamas need to use candales instead. There is no need to state facts to unimformed people, because facts kill their arguements.
Anyway, I cannot wait to see what African inspired clothing the First Lady and her girls will wear.
I feel compelled to state that it is so pollyanaish to deny that racism does not play a featured role in politics in the United States as well as in other areas of American life.
The simple fact that a site exists that is called “BLACK” Celebrity Kids is evidence along with a plethora of other examples that can be cited as proof that race/ethnicity is an issue that is at the forefront even in the 21st century….for better or worse.
Such is the REALITY of life. In my opinion.
Official trips by the first family are paid by the government, but all personal elements are paid personally.
The Secret Service must protect the First family and the cost to taxpayers would presumably go up during travel.
Seems a black first lady isn’t allowed quite the same freedom as a white first lady.
Laura Bush traveled with an entourage as well.
Policy guidelines developed by the Reagan White house have served as a basis for the travel policies of subsequent administrations.
There’s a lot of misinformation out there.
I hope this is helpful info for the U.S. taxpayers who pay their all important taxes when they buy their can of beans and cigarettes. Obama has to buy his OWN cigarettes….he can’t charge it to US.
Why do you think I have to justify myself to you? I wrote facts in general and not to you per se. I pick my battles on here when necessary and this one is just not worth it.
Addtionally, evidently in spite of what you “think” or “feel” the Obamas should be doing, they do not take it into serious consideration.
As if the country was in better economic shape when Laura Bush was traveling on the “tax payers dime” as you put it.
It is a typical Republican/racist strategy to berate the first Lady as a modern day “Marie Antoinette” to turn the tide of opinion against her.
Like I tell others, Micky, you don’t have to agree with me or like me, but there is no need for you to personally attack me here if I have a differing point of view than yours.
Obviously you and I have different values and that’s life. Remember, we do not know each other and this is an open, free forum.
On an even more positive note, it is unique and wonderful that the First daughters, as young African Americans, have the opportunity to visit the continent that they know their paternal grandfather came from.
Hope they visited their great grandma and cousins in Kenya while they were in Africa.
Use up as much of those tax dollars while they can. Everybody else who has been in the White House has.
Just my opinion and to each their own is my philosophy.
“Use up all those tax dollars while you can?” No wonder the black community is in the state it is in!! “Use up all those welfare dollars and food stamps while we can!” Pathetic.
Micky, although we disagree, I do respect your opinion and I know that a lot of people share your view. We cool, honey.
Oh unimformed Micky you obviously don’t know how the deficit works, and how America has a huge deficit. I wish many AA would spend more time educating themselves about politics, rather than speaking out the side of their mouths about stuff they obviously have no clue about. The President went to Ohio Friday, and guess what HE got their with FUEL that is payed for by TAX DOLLARS.
All on the taxpayers dime!!! They seriously need to tone down these extravagant getaways with our economy in such bad shape.
As so did all the other Presidents & their families. I don’t recall everyone being up in arms when Bush, Clinton nor Reagan did it.
Sherely, I love the way you succinctly paraphrased and summarized my sentiments, too…exactly! I like your way with words.
I love all of the First ladies hair styles. So neatly well coiffed and groomed. Great role models to all. in every way
It’s great to see the First Daughters going to the continent from which their deceased African grandfather hailed from.
I wonder if they visited their great-grandma and cousins in Kenya while they were on the continent?
BEAUTIFUL FAMILY! THEY ARE VERY BLESSED BUT THEY DESERVE IT. MICHELLE AND BARACK OBAMA WORK VERY HARD FOR WHAT THEY HAVE. LETS NOT FORGET THAT MICHELLE GRADUATED FROM HARVARD A LONG TIME BEFORE BARACK OBAMA. THEY ARE BOTH EDUCATED AND TALENTED. NOW THEY HAVE BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH!
Whether or not the First daughters have their hair permed or pressed, their father and mother paid for it with their own money.
Cute hair!
I’m happy for all of them…especially for grandma. To spend your entire life working hard for your family and to now be able to travel abroad and spend most of your time with your child and grandchildren….all of both of her children’s accomplishments…live in the White House. I know I’m babbling but I think it really speaks alot about the kind of parent you were when your children flourish
…was so excited when i first saw the heading!Cape Town is a beautiful city and i know that they will have a good time (and i should know since i’m South African, and happen to live in Cape Town)…such a shame that they are coming in winter though since we have winter rainfall (cold and rainy weather might be a problem) and they wont be able to enjoy our beautiful beaches. ah well, i doubt that they will show up at the University of Cape Town:(
These giirlz are beYond LUCKY! I hope they continue to have fun and enjoy their trips. These memories will last forever. =)
THEY ARE GOING TO LOVE CAPE TOWN! I am from South Africa but I live in LA now, there is seriously no place like it. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world
These girls are blessed beyond measure. They have wonderful parents and so many opportunities. Shoot, even though I’m afraid to fly, I’d take a seat on the wing just to go along with them. I want to visit Africa so bad. I’ve heard so many people say that a trip to Africa has changed their lives.
SA & Hawaii are on my bucket list. These children are blessed. The Obamas are great parents.
Agree Sherley. They are great parents. My bucket list is the same as yours.
I am so sorry to offend all of the upstanding, high tax paying property and business owners who frequent BCK. (Yeah right, huh?)
ALL their tax dollars feeding and vacationing the poor Obamas.
Obama gets $200,000 a year, and former President Bush signed that salary into law 4 years before Obama became president.
President Obama pays for his children’s schooling and personal goods, meals and etc. out of his and Michelle’s own money.
It’s a good thing his book sales have made millions since he’s been in office.
I rather pay for the Obama girls to have an experience like this than to pay for them to be in boarding school. Or better yet, than to continue paying for ‘the people using up the all money in the welfare system’. At least the Obama girls will learn from this opportunity, instead of always having their hands out.
Maybe if the young ladies in the welfare system would have had the opportunity to travel on someone else’s dime, they wouldn’t be in the welfare system now.
Before everyone jumps down my throat..trust & believe I know exactly what I am talking about.
Hi Sherley. I agree with you 100%. Good points you make, and I know you know what you are talking about. Also I am not just agreeing with you because I am a huge fan of yours
.
I just want to add, it is incredible how some people assume that EVERYBODY on welfare is Black…just not true.
I just want to aide in dispelling the mental image that it’s just “lazy Black single women” on public assistance. In San Francisco, at least, Asian and Hispanics account for the majority of those living on the public dole, which I’m sure statistically represents the country, given that Black people don’t represent a majority of the US population.
It also kills me how the very people that complain about their “tax dollars” are for the most part people who only pay taxes on food and other cost of living items.
They act as if their measly contribution is akin to, say,
the Google corporation, or some other private entity or homeowners paying sizable taxes that help keep the country churning.
To those folks , we thank you for paying the taxes when you buy your television sets, nail polish, home perm kits, tire rims, Velveta cheese, Italian bread, greens, chitterlings, pork chops, chicken, rice, corn, canned beans, noodles, bagels, hummus, tortillas, wine and bok choy.
It helps, but is merely a pittance in the grand scheme of things.
Welfare recipients pay taxes on food they buy, too, as well as on some of their daily habits like cigarettes and alcohol and God forbid, some of their medicine.
I am a huge fan of yours as well Pisces.
I only have 1 thing to add:it is only 2% of tax dollars from the working population’s salary that goes to fund Social Service agencies.
As far as the majority race on the system, if I printed it, my brother would lose his job.
Sherley, thanks for sharing as always! XOXO to you! Hope you’re having a beautiful day.
i am from africa i have been to south africa its really nice they have the best chips ever i lived there for 11 years am 13 i love it and botswana is like south africa except they have nicer chips
*sigh* Can this family adopt me? lol
Me too Fashioned.
Oh I wish I was going with them!!! Spent last summer in SA and I’m having serious withdrawals. As a matter of fact I was looking at SA culture on youtube when I come here to see the First Daughters visiting! I hope they have a wonderful and captivating experience. There is no place like Africa.
aww yay, how fun for the girls! this is shaping up to be a nice summer for them already. can’t wait to see what cute little outfits they turn up in.
Yayyyy for Sasha and Malia. 2nd trip to Africa in 2 years. How wonderful for them. Waiting for them to hit up Asia and Australia and then they would have been to every continent (except for Antarctica) They are going to be so well-traveled once Mr. Obama is no longer President.
Malia is so tall oh my goodness but she and Sasha are both so adorable. Hope they have fun
And I would love to visit Africa one day..I just heard its real expensive but it would be so worth the trip.
OMG! These girls are so blessed to be able to travel around the world and learn different languages and cultures. I hear South Africa is a beautiful place to vacation. Malia and Sasha are both cuties.
