ZAHARA ROCKS NEW BRAIDS IN VEGAS

Zahara, seven next month, showed off her new hair plait extensions this weekend while out with her family in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Zahara’s new hairstyle comes after intense scrutiny from Newsweek reporter Allison Samuels. In 2009, Samuels wrote a series of  articles that criticized Jolie for not doing anything special with Zahara’s hair.  In one post Samuels wrote, “In recent pictures it’s clear Angelina Jolie hasn’t taken the time to learn or understand the long and painful history of African-American women and hair. If she had I can’t imagine she would continue to allow Zahara to look like she has in the past few months. Photos of  Zahara show the 4-year-old girl sporting hair that is wild and unstyled, uncombed and dry. Basically: a ‘hot mess.’”  While many disagreed with Samuels, some readers deemed the reporter to be correct in her observations.

While in Las Vegas, the Jolie-Pitt clan went to see the  Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour theatrical production which made its debut on October 2, 2011. The show will tour North America for two years before moving on to Europe and other parts of the world.

Zahara is wearing a Stella McCartney Ruffle Dress, available $51.59 at SaksFifthAvenue.

Leave Zahara’s hair alone! They are plenty black kids who have hair extension in their hair. Zahara can have braids in her hair if she wants too. Maybe Angelina Jolie wanted to give Zahara’s hair a break from the ponytail and maybe the ponytail was breaking her hair off. Plus the family travels alot and I’m sure it’s easy for Angelina not to worrying about doing her hair.

There are some black people who don’t even know how to do thier own hair either.

I bet if Angelina was a black female nobody wouldn’t say a darn thing.

This is why some black young girls and adult females have self image problems. This is another reason why some black people wish they were white. Maybe this is another reason so many black men date out of their race.

Like the movie School Daze: WAKE UP!

  • Darla January 1, 2012 at 11:29 am

Her hair always looked fine to me. I rather her not have extensions.

  • META December 29, 2011 at 1:30 pm

The hairstyle is typical of most african american girls in this country. it doesn’t look that bad. Jolie is white and doesn’t have a ton of experience with hair that’s not like hers…duh. The extensions don’t say to her that her hair is not ok. Too many ridiculous opinions. it’s just a hairstyle. her hair was dry and not taken care of properly. They’ll get it together eventually. sheesh

  • TAMARA December 28, 2011 at 11:43 pm

very sad. what a beautiful little girl. just because her hair is done in a pony tail or out does not mean it is being unkept. I always thought this mother took well care of the little girl. To put extentions in her hair is crazy! The reporter who said this needs to be slapped! It’s okay for white children or children with straight hair to run around with it being out but it’s a shame when black children do it? What is wrong with you people. She should be able to run around with her hair care free just like her siblings, just becuase it is a different texture don’t mean a thing!

  • UGOGURL!!! December 26, 2011 at 12:11 pm

ALL this hype of that babies hair ain’t gonna make Angelina take them braids out. Everyone has an opinion RIGHT OR WRONG but it doesn’t change what she and Brad are doing to do with THEIR daughter! We are NON MFN FACTORS…LOL!!

  • MeMe December 22, 2011 at 11:28 am

last time I checked, Zahara is Ethiopian so why was that reporter talking about African-American women hair struggles. Get a map!

  • MixtryMama December 21, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Z’s hair looked better before. Extensions seem like they will do damage to her type of hair. That being said, these kids always look so stylish and cute.

  • Renae December 21, 2011 at 2:49 pm

I’ve read comments where everyone is being harsh because of this kids hair; however, when I get my 5 year old niece off the bus there are kids at 5 with all types of weave. What really matters is how the kids are being treated, not hair. I don’t like weave on kids, but a lot of us do it-we just tend to see fault in Angelina because she’s white raising a black daughter.

  • CHAI December 21, 2011 at 2:46 pm

ummm Zahara does not even need braids in her hair…next thing ppl will be saying she needs a relaxer…if you look closely her hair is fine…it is not coarse hair.. AngelinaJolie plz let her rock the natural hairdo… she is just fine how she was before :)

  • germanwom25 December 21, 2011 at 4:12 am

Braid style looks much more better on Zahara than her natural dry hair. Really sweet!

  • Lisa December 20, 2011 at 2:39 pm

Maybe it’s my bias, but I just don’t like when little kids have braids in their hair. It kinda looks like Shiloh was experimenting on little Z!

Anyways, apart from how the hair has looked in the past and how it looks now (shudder) Angelina and Brad apparently take very good care of all of their children.

Now, if someone would please point her to a Caribbean grandmother who will cornrow that lovely hair of Z’s! It would take care of the daily maintenance and look a ton better (if done right) than what’s happening now.

I guess alot of the criticism (mine especially) comes from the fact that the Pitt-Jolie’s are very very wealthy. Surely they can find someone who can do a top job on her hair – like I said, hire a Caribbean grandmother!

  • realistic December 20, 2011 at 12:17 pm

I remember some time ago Angie said that Zahara wanted her hair to look like the rest of her family. Angie went to the toy store to get her a doll that looked like her but couldn’t find any. She was shocked that even the black dolls had long straight hair. I think she’s really doing her best to make her daughter appreciate her hair and how versatile it is. Why don’t we ever celebrate the advantages and versatility of black hair? Do you know how hard it is to plait, twist, braid, cornrow or lock ‘white’ hair? (at least neatly)

Also @ EVELINA RAE don’t apologise for your opinion. I understand what you were trying to say. People on here always quick to call someone ignorant like they know everything. And I agree they need to do something with Kenzo’s hair. Either moisturize, cornrow, twist or just plain cut. I think people don’t mind his hair as much because he’s a boy but it still looks dry and untidy.

    • connie1 December 26, 2011 at 10:05 am

IM QUICK TO CALL A COMMENT IGNORANT IF IT IS IGNORAN! AA HAIR COMES IN ALL DIFFERENT TEXTURES. KENZO AND ZAHARA HAVE GORGEOUS BUT VERY DIFFERENT HAIR. BOTH OF THEIR HAIR IS MOISTURIZED AND NICE LOOKING. SO ITS MY OPINION.

@ Kiki I have to respectfully disagree with your earlier comment that “We are the ONLY race of people that aren’t comfortable with how God made us” From where I sit, I see a world full of people of all races who are not happy or comfortable with how they were made. From breast implants, to over tanning, to fake lips and cheeks, to starving yourself to be thin.. (I could go on) it seems everyone wants to change their looks to something they view as ideal. People of other races change their noses, and eyes because they want to separate themselves from a trait that they feel is unattractive in their race. I think a sweeping statement like that does a disservice to black people.

  • Hope22 December 20, 2011 at 3:20 am

OMG – I can’t believe people are fighting over a child’s (not their own child btw) hair????

I hope one day we can all give it a rest, not all parents are made equal. Angelina is doing her best – hot mess braids and all – she is doing her best to provide her daughter with the best experience as a balck woman. I can’t imagine how she picked out the extensions???Lol…

Zee looks cute and her Ethopian hair always looks perfect. Kids are kids, they WILL NOT ALWAYS LOOK AIR BRUSHED…. SMH

  • Kim December 20, 2011 at 12:46 am

I am sure with the money that family has,Zahara’s hair will look like whoever, whatever or however, she wants it to look like when she is old enough to care. Until then, who cares? Adopt your “own” children and you won’t have to worry about someone else not understanding your hair.

  • feel free December 19, 2011 at 9:30 pm

Awww man i loved zaharas afro and yes those braids are not done neatly

  • none December 19, 2011 at 8:57 pm

The braids are nicely done. There is nothing wrong with her hair. Maybe somebody from Ethiopia braided Zahra’s hair and maybe that’s how they wear their hair braided. This is why so many black girls have sef image problems.

    • connie1 December 19, 2011 at 9:16 pm

YES SO MANY DO HAVE SELF IMAGE ISSUES BECAUSE OF IGNORANT BLACK PEOPLE LIKE EVELINA RAE. MAKING IGNORANT COMMENTS ABOUT AA HAIR.

      • EVELINA RAE December 20, 2011 at 11:34 am

I’m sorry you feel that way, Connie1. I’m honestly not ignorant, but your opinion is YOUR opinion and obviously I have mine. You’re known for getting upset about this topic, so I’ll let it be and move on.

Nothing personal. I don’t know them or you, so it is what it is, no big deal.

        • connie1 December 20, 2011 at 4:42 pm

OK I APOLIGIZE FOR CALLING YOU IGNORANT, BUT THE COMMENT IS IGNORANT. THERE IS NO TYPICAL AA HAIR. SOME AA’S HAVE SOFT HAIR JUST LIKE ZAHARA. THAT IS WHAT I AM TRYING TO GET THROUGH TO PEOPLE. BLACKS HAVE SO MANY DIFFERENT LOOKS AND THATS WHY WE ARE SO BEAUTIFUL!

AFRICAN AMERICANS/AFRICANS HAVE SO MANY DIFFERENT LOOKS AND THATS WHY WE ARE SO BEAUTIFUL!

  • Pisces December 19, 2011 at 7:30 pm

Braids are a popular hairstyle in Ethiopia where Zahara was born. If and when she travels there she will see. She is not a little African American child. Had she stayed orphaned in Ethiopia she probably would not have had anyone to care about her hair being combed or not.

She is so cute and her natural hair is pretty. I love that little camel coat and I hope she grows up to make everyone in her life proud of her.

    • Pisces December 19, 2011 at 7:35 pm

Side note: Shiloh’s and Pax’s hair styles don’t look very well thought out, either in the picture. At least the boy’s hair is the same length as Dad’s is these days.

      • Victoria December 19, 2011 at 7:43 pm

        @Pisces Agreed

Some people just can’t accept that Brad and Angelina are not uptight, prim, and proper, not-a-hair-out-of-place people, and they’ve passed that down to their children; all of their children. When they’re not going somewhere important, they definitely don’t dress to impress, hair included.

    • Pisces December 19, 2011 at 9:29 pm

If you do the research of Ethiopian tribal cultures, there are rites of passage associated with various Ethiopian hair styles particularly for girls as they mature into adulthood.

Some styles involve the actual weaving in of braids.

Don’t take my word for it look it up. Google in “Ethiopian braids/culture”.

  • PlainMean December 19, 2011 at 7:15 pm

I wouldn’t put extensions on a child this young. I would be afraid that it would damage her hair. Plus, I think it’s important for a young black girl to know that her natural hair is just fine. But hey, that’s their child and you can never please EVERYBODY!

  • Keis December 19, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Ain’t nothing wrong with Zahara’s hair. I think A.J. is doing well with her children.
It’s the winter and they travel a lot. Why wouldn’t they braid her hair and give it a rest?

  • Toya December 19, 2011 at 4:36 pm

Is this Allison Samuels serious? Of all the topics she could’ve reported on, she felt the need to criticize Angelina about some damn hair!! I agree with you 100% Sherley! She needs to STFU for real!! Zahara looks absolutely beautiful with her pony tails and natural styles. Angelina is doing a great job with her princess.

  • EVELINA RAE December 19, 2011 at 3:49 pm

I think when Zahara has her hair in one or two pony tails it looks MUCH BETTER than the added hair, extensions are terrible!Angie TAKE THAT S*** OUT, ASAP!

Zahara doesn’t have the typical African American texture, so I think her hair looked great in or out. Angelina was doing fine.

Has anyone seen little Olivia Luna? Her mom NEEDS to do something with that head. o_0 Even Kenzo’s head needs a treated and creamed, lord!

    • Kiki December 19, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Wait…so her hair looks great out b/c it’s not typical AA hair? Seriously? SMDH!! We need to stop this self-hating bulls***!

      • Jess December 19, 2011 at 5:33 pm

@Kiki – what I think she means is that since Zahara has a thinner, less kinky hair texture than most african americans it can easily look cute, healthy, and maintained without the braids…

It is harder to manage the really tightly coiled hair (like we have in my family!) so when my daughter was little I had to do ponytails with lots of detangler spray, grease, dip the brush in water, the whole nine LOL – all for my daughter to look appropriate enough to go outside!

        • Jess December 19, 2011 at 5:36 pm

Not to mention, because her hair is a thinner texture, those heavy braids are putting strain on her hair and could break off her edges..

          • Kiki December 19, 2011 at 6:12 pm

We will have to agree to disagree b/c I think tightly coiled hair looks appropriate the way it is naturally. It doesn’t have to be a certain texture to be deemed acceptable. We still have a long ways to go to change our view of our unique beauty. We are the ONLY race of people that aren’t comfortable with how God made us. We feel the need to teach our little girls at an early age that they aren’t acceptable the way God made them and they “need” relaxers or 100+ ponytails to look presentable. I seriously appreciate white people adopting our children and just letting them be, just like other kids. Why can’t we just love ourselves too?

        • connie1 December 19, 2011 at 9:14 pm

JESS WHAT SHE SAID MAKES NO SENSE. TYPICAL AA HAIR IS ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT TEXTURES DEPENDING ON THE PERSON. ZAHARA IS AFRICAN! GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEAD! SHE HAS GORGEOUS HAIR JUST LIKE PLENTY OF BLACK PEOPLE WHETHER THEY ARE FROM AMERICA OR AFRICA!

          • Jess December 19, 2011 at 10:36 pm

@Kiki I do agree with what you’re saying but what I’m saying is that the tightly coiled, thick hair (like my daughter has) IS more difficult to maintain than Zahara’s thinner hair.

And my daughter never had 100+ ponytails…she wore 2 ponytails and one ponytail in the back until she was about 12 lol..she has never had a perm and she is 19 now and has hair down her back.

I think everyone is missing the point of what Evelina Rae is saying – she is not saying we are self hating black hair that we were born with.

I could never send my daughter to school with her hair down and out because it would be a matted mess by the time she got home and she’d be in tears for hours while I comb it out! But trust that she has worn her natural state of hair all her life but I felt that she needed ponytails or else it would be a mess to comb out!

          • Jess December 19, 2011 at 10:49 pm

@Connie – I know several people of Ethiopian descent and they all have a beautiful texture of hair – I LOVE Zahara’s hair :)

I just think she doesn’t need the extension braids. If anything the fake hair is telling her that she is not good enough how God made her.

And please don’t get me wrong, I think the “typical” AA hair texture (tightly coiled, thick) is beautiful- but I do think it is MORE difficult to maintain/look presentable than those with thinner hair. People with hair like Zahara can wash it and brush it into a ponytail but hair like mine and my daughters – takes a lot more effort to achieve that same ponytail lol. That’s all I’m saying…

          • connie1 December 20, 2011 at 4:37 pm

READ MY LIPS…THERE IS NO TYPICAL AA HAIR! THATS MY POINT JESS. ITS IGNORANT TO SAY THAT. SOME AA’S HAVE SOFT HAIR. SO WHAT YOUR SAYING STILL MAKES NO SENSE!

          • Jess December 20, 2011 at 5:36 pm

@Connie – girl calm down, it is not that serious to be that worked up. I’m done lol…I was just trying to defend Evelina Rae because I understand what she’s saying.

and in actuality, there IS a ‘typical’ AA hair, yes AA hair comes in all colors and textures but MOST AA people have the tightly coiled, thick hair…point blank. There are many that do not but the TYPICAL is what I just described. No one is saying that all AAs have the same hair type….

I’m not gonna keep arguing with you…I could care less what Angie does to her daughter’s hair. Smh …

          • Jess December 20, 2011 at 5:42 pm

And Connie – I’m not understanding where you are gathering that our comments stem from ‘self hate’ no where in mine or Evelina Rae’s comments does it say that natural black hair is not beautiful!
You are reading too much into the comments..

    • Jessica December 19, 2011 at 4:24 pm

Why would Kimora put a relaxer in a boy’s head. She would be better off just cutting it. But I think Kenzo’s hair is fine.

      • Victoria December 19, 2011 at 7:36 pm

People of typical african-american heritage can wear their hair out and have it looking beautiful and healthy. Just because we don’t all have specific curl patterns/kinkier hair, doesn’t mean that it’s any less beautiful. People just need to learn how to take better care of their hair, when they do, whether they let it flow free or pin it up, it’ll look great.

        • connie1 December 22, 2011 at 11:58 am

YOUR COMMENT IS IGNORANT JESS, POINT BLANK. I CAN SHOW YOU PLENTY OF AA’S WITH DIFFERENT HAIR TEXTURES. THATS WHY WE ARE CALLED AFRICAN AMERICANS, BECAUSE WE COME FROM DIFFERENT PLACES WITH DIFFERENT FEATURES AND HAIR TYPES. DO SOME READING JESS!

      • EVELINA RAE December 20, 2011 at 11:04 am

I never said relaxer. I said treated and creamed, as in moisturizer. His hair looks real dry, but I think it’s a fine texture wasn’t hating on that, at all. Kenzo has what I’d classify as typical African American hair. You can’t deny that a lot of African American’s have a texture just like his. I know just as there is no one shade of black I know there is no one texture of our hair, too. It was my opinion ’cause I’ve seen enough children to notice that most of them have hair like Kenzo and there ain’t nothing wrong with that, but Zahara’s texture is different…it’s more loose and soft looking and looks great up or out yet Angelina is bashed and Kimora isn’t.

      • connie1 December 22, 2011 at 11:55 am

WOW, JESS STILL DOESNT GET IT. THERE IS NO TYPICAL AA HAIR BECAUSE AA’S COME FROM ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS. SOME HAVE SOFT CURLS, SOME KINKY, SOME IN BETWEEN. YOUR STATEMENT JESS IS A STEREOTYPE. YOU HAVE NOT MET ALL AA’S AND YOU DO NOT KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THEIR HAIR IS ALL SIMILAR. THERE ARE SO MANY AA’S LIVING IN AMERICA WITH DIFFRENT HAIR TEXTURES. SO YOUR REALITY IS BASED ON IGNORANCE.

    • connie1 December 19, 2011 at 9:12 pm

EVELINA RAE YOUR COMMENT IS IGNORANT. FIRST OF ALL ZAHARA IS AFRICAN. IT DOESNT GET ANYMORE BLACK THAN THAT! SECOND OF ALL, THERE IS NO TYPICAL AA HAIR. KENZO’S HAIR LOOKS GREAT AND DOESNT NEED ANYTHING.

      • EVELINA RAE December 20, 2011 at 11:19 am

It wasn’t meant to be ignorant, but I can see why you said that. I know Zahara is African, but look at 100 African kids and see how many have loose curls almost straight looking soft hair, without a product in it, that looks like hers. Not many would and my point is her hair is fine, so why are people wanting Angelina to “do something” with it when there are so many children with natural hair, which is ideal (both my kids have natural hair), that need a moisturizer and a treatment to keep it healthy and looking healthy. Natural hair is better, MUCH better, but we still need to moisturize it and give it a treatment, no matter what the texture may be, but a thicker texture hair cannot get away with no moisture where as a softer texture can, for a short time. We shouldn’t just leave it as is it will break and look very, very dry. Our hair needs moisturizer.

        • Sherley December 20, 2011 at 2:15 pm

I agree Evelina, when I first went natural, I didn’t mosturize enough & my hair started to break off & not grow. I was working out as well, so my thick hair was taking a beating. I have sense learn to mosturize, mosturize & mosturize again because I thought I forgot to do it. My hair is now healthy & grew so much.

          • Sherley December 20, 2011 at 3:56 pm

*since not sense. *throw hands up*

          • connie1 December 20, 2011 at 4:40 pm

EVERYONE’S HAIR NEEDS SOME TYPE OF MOISTURE NO MATTER WHAT RACE THEY ARE. I CANT BELIEVE WE ARE ARGUING OVER OUR OWN HAIR. ZAHARA IS OURS! SHE IS BLACK! SHE IS AFRICAN! WE ARE THAT AS WELL SO WHY CANT WE CLAIM OUR OWN BEAUTY AS WHAT IT IS. SOME OF US HAVE SOFT CURLS AND SOME KINKY. ITS ALL BEAUTIFUL ANYWAY!

  • Doting December 19, 2011 at 3:26 pm

there was absolutely nothing wrong with the way angie styled zahara’s hair in the past. i agree it took her a little while to perfect it but i liked the way she did her hair. not every kid likes to sit and get their hair braided or done up. my daughter is half black she throws a fit every time i try to braid her hair. She is extremely tender headed. she gets that from her father, he cuts his hair low and it hurts when he brushes. a lot of people criticize that i don’t know how to do her hair because i’m white. i know how to do it, she just wont let me. the only person she lets braid her hair is her grandmother and she has to baby her and bribe her even before she starts braiding it and she still cries thru the ordeal. maybe zahara is just tender headed and letting it lose or putting it up is the best way to style it. some people need to mind their business. her hair looked fine without the braids. my baby would never let me put braids in her hair, it would hurt way too much she would rip them out that same day.

  • realistic December 19, 2011 at 3:21 pm

I doubt that they braided her hair because of what anyone else thinks, particularly since they waited over 2 years after that article to do it. Just like many black parents they probably wanted a break from combing every day. I just hope they aren’t too tight cause her hairline is already naturally far back and her hair is thin but she looks very pretty with her braids.

  • Jessica December 19, 2011 at 3:21 pm

Zahara’s outfit is too cute. I have no problem with the braids, I just hope they aren’t too tight.

  • Seriously December 19, 2011 at 3:19 pm

She is gorgeous..I love her braids.

  • Sherley December 19, 2011 at 3:19 pm

I don’t like the hairstyle but it doesn’t take away from Zahara’s cuteness.

Samuels needs to volunteer to show AJ how it’s properly done. Until she does, she needs to STFU!

    • That's for me to know and you, well you know the rest... December 19, 2011 at 4:30 pm

I don’t like her hair either. The braids look a HOT MESS! She’s still beautiful though. I love her coat also.

    • Trisha December 19, 2011 at 4:48 pm

I agree. the braids look poorly done. She should have just braided her real hair

      • connie1 December 19, 2011 at 9:10 pm

HOPEFULLY THE BRAIDS ARE JUST IN TO HELP HER HAIR GROW. SHE HAS GORGEOUS NATURAL HAIR. I HAVE NATURAL HAIR AND WEARING BRAIDS HELPED MY HAIR GROW A LOT. NOW ITS ALL THE WAY DOWN MY BACK!

  • theyknow December 19, 2011 at 3:17 pm

    I love Zahara’s outfit!!

  • Celia December 19, 2011 at 3:15 pm

    Woah, nicely dressed kids.
