Does Black History Month need more “history”?
Many parents are finding that kids are learning about the same people every school year for Black History Month. They learn about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks from the time they are in kindergarten until they graduate high school.
Why aren’t schools teaching kids about all of the other legendary Black people in America’s history such as Wally Amos, the founder of Famous Amos cookies or Ben Carson, renowned neurosurgeon famous for his ground-breaking work separating conjoined twins?
Our kids are hearing about the same people repeatedly and aren’t getting exposed to the many Black people that have shaped the nations music, culture, science and politics. Since we may not have the ability to rewrite the textbooks that our kids are getting in school, it is our job to educate our young people about our people. Being able to understand the impact and influence of Blacks in America will help them become positively influenced and inspired. Seeing faces that look like theirs will help them gain the confidence they need to dream big, overcome obstacles and achieve anything they set out to do.
What are some ways that you are educating your kids during Black History Month?
