UPCOMING: QUVENZHANE WALLIS WOWS THE CROWD

Quvenzhane Wallis is new to the acting world but is fitting in as a natural among stars. The 8-year-old actress plays Hushpuppy in the film Beasts of the  Southern Wild, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

In the film, Hushpuppy lives with her father in a rural, remote part of Southern Louisiana that is surrounded by water. Hushpuppy is faced with prehistoric creatures and her father’s deteriorating health. She leaves home to seek out her mother.

Nazie (as Quvenzhane is nicknamed) was discovered by the film’s director in a library while with her mom.

Although Nazie has never acted before the film, MTV.com has predicted that she will be nominated for the  ”Best Actress” award in the 2013 Academy Awards.

Her personality and natural ability to win over an audience will take her far.

The MTV comment lilkunta is NOT “bs”. They are not the only ones predicting her. ALOT of people who have screened the movie are. So please don’t make comments like that when you don’t know what you’re talking about. Quvenzhane, will probably be the first black female under 18 to break the mold , & I for one say “hallelujah”!

And who cares about the name. It’s her TALENT that counts. Besides, it’s rather cool to see a kid in this industry who ISN’T named Dakota ;)

MTV predicting her getting an oscar nom is bs. Afr Am only gets noms for negative or subserviant roles (xcept Will Smith who was rightfully nom’d for Ali).

I have a Yoruba name that when people first see they are like ‘what can i call you’. I pray that her name is from another culture and has significance, not some bs her parents made up.

As can be seen here from alll the coments focusing on her name and not her film, perhaps for her film career she should just be Quv ? Venz? Zhane?

  • whateva March 8, 2012 at 10:28 pm

Well, at least there’s no apostrophe. Anyway, congratulation, Q!

  • WriterSanti March 8, 2012 at 2:02 pm

    Well congrats to her.

And this is a perfect example of why parents shouldn’t give their children crazy, unpronouncable names (unless the family’s strictly from a foreign culture). Everyone’s so focused on trying to pronounce the name (or the unfortunate implications of the nickname), that no one’s even commented on the girl’s accomplishments. I don’t mind moderately unique or cultural names, but this one’s way too much.

Read on another website that her name is pronounced Kwah-VAHN-zhah-nay.
    It actually is quite pretty.

    • Wyetta March 8, 2012 at 9:05 am

I don’t think that sounds pretty at all, but what does it matter what I think? I gave my daughter a Yoruban name, four letters, two syllables and people still act like I said her name was Kilkoulklkjdioijh when I say it simply because it’s not some typical name they’ve heard before.

  • YoungBlackStarz March 7, 2012 at 3:03 pm

Oh, and I’d like to add that it’s pretty disappointing that most of the comments are about her name being bad rather than her accomplishment. Way to go, Nazie!

  • YoungBlackStarz March 7, 2012 at 2:58 pm

What happened to my comment? Anyway, I said her name is pronounced Kwah-VAHN-Jah-Nay.

  • Gemini March 7, 2012 at 2:39 pm

Why in the world would her mother name her something so extremely EXTRA that no one would be able to pronounce or spell it?! And please tell me that her nickname is not pronounced like Nazi!!!

  • Ms. Gypsy Eyes March 7, 2012 at 2:27 pm

Okay.. What the heck kind of name does SHE HAVE?!?!

  • Cici March 7, 2012 at 2:16 pm

Just watched a youtube video where the director or producer pronounced her name as kwa-Ven-jah-nay. Wow… Nazie it is. But she’s a cutie, I wish her well!

  • YoungBlackStarz March 7, 2012 at 1:48 pm

Her name is pronounced Kwah-VAHN-Jah-Nay. She’s been receiving lots of rave reviews and is predicted to become a big star in 2013.

  • Pisces March 7, 2012 at 1:44 pm

She is a cute little girl. I love her hair style. Her nickname Nazie is a little to close to “Nazi” for it to be a cute nickname.

  • Seriously (realone) March 7, 2012 at 12:48 pm

How do you pronounce her name?

  • UGOGURL!!! March 7, 2012 at 12:06 pm

WOW (AT THAT NAME)!!! I can’t even begin to sound it out….WOW!!

    • Oxford 2013 March 7, 2012 at 12:09 pm

We were @Sundance,Utah I was told it’s pronounced “Ven za ne”.

      • Misunderstood March 7, 2012 at 12:16 pm

@Oxford2013 Happy belated bday :) ! Question! R their alot of colored people in Utah!

        • Oxford 2013 March 7, 2012 at 12:49 pm

Plenty of people of color there (at least those that like to ske). Park Slope, Utah is famous for skiing and I believe once before my time the Winter Oympics were held there.

During the Northern Ski season November-March, we visit Park slope at least once.

        • Oxford 2013 March 7, 2012 at 1:16 pm

PS. Thank you @Misunderstood for wishing me a happy belated birthday. It was good of the Lord to give me another year. I’ll try my best to be deserving of it.

      • Sherley March 7, 2012 at 12:38 pm

Hey Oxford! How was your birthday weekend?

If her name is pronounced VenZhaNe, why not call her that. What’s with the Qu & extra letters? Her parents need to be slapped..special meaning or not.

Anywho..I wish her much success but Ima have to call her Q or Zhane.

        • Misunderstood March 7, 2012 at 1:03 pm

@herley I feel ya! Aaliyah means the best, it’s spelled a 100 different ways and the meaning is still the same!

          • Oxford 2013 March 7, 2012 at 1:27 pm

What about the actor Mahershalalhashbaz Ali? My dad knows him but I doubt that there are two people in the same room that can pronounce his name.

        • Oxford 2013 March 7, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Hey Ms. Sherley, First off my birthday weekend WAS THE BEST. I’m not going back to school until next Monday so we just got neck to the US today. I felt so special, usually girls debut in a group but my parents (or I should say mother) chose to have me come out by myself. The evening was quite a workout, without more girls I swear I danced for four hours straight. And my parents got 10 marriage offers for me. :-)

Sunday was good too. We went horseback riding, I was pre measured for my saddle but can we say “chafe”. :-) During hunting I got a small buck. (Don’t worry the meat doesn’t go to waste, it goes to the abbatoire and then divided to families that need it. There are needy families even amoung the “better” addresses in France)

The best part of my weeked was having all of my “greats” with me. My great great maternal uncle, my great paternal uncle, four great aunts, AND my FOUR great grand parents. Can I say great genes? To be able to all of them in the same room at the same time. Amazing

Now in reference to baby girls name…I know that all of the actors were American and that her and the “dad” were first time actors. I don’t know what culture she is from but a name that makes the two first consanants silent is commom amoung quite a few African/Afrikan tribes. My mother’s first name starts with a Capital consanant and a vowel seperated by a ” ‘ ” then lower case letters after the vowel. Hell to pronouce unless you were of Italian/Siccilian decent and knew that the ” ‘ ” is ignored and the name ponounced the way it is spelled like D’Amato which is pronounced Damato.

I’m on my way to the Varsity for some hot dogs, I eat vegetarian most of the year but when I’m in the ATL which also happens to be the city I was born in…I have to go to Varsity.

  • Misunderstood March 7, 2012 at 12:05 pm

  • Trisha March 7, 2012 at 11:37 am
