This is the first year in the history of the Essence festival that a fourth day will be added and with that comes another first. The festival will be the stage for new and upcoming young talent.
Every year, the Essence festival is a highly anticipated event for the city of New Orleans. The festival is a venue for such seasoned artists as Usher, Prince, Janet Jackson and Beyonce. This year, the event is making room for some of R&B and hip-hop’s newcomers. Diggy Simmons and the OMG Girlz will be performing.
Essence Communications President Michelle Ebanks noted that Diggy and the OMG Girlz both exude positive energy that the goes perfectly with the “New & Next” stage.
“We sought groups who we could look to move youth forward as examples through their own experiences that might help point them in a better direction,” she said.
Diggy and the OMG Girlz are excited about the opportunity and for being chosen because of their positive inspirations.
The OMG Girlz had this to say about their perception to young people:
“We try to bring a lot of positivity through our group,” said Baby Doll. “We love what we’re doing and we get along. We try to leave the drama on TV. It’s an honor and a blessing to be in this kind of spotlight and we want to use (the fame) wisely.”
“It’s just how our parents raised us to be,” Beauty said. “We like being a role model.”
Diggy is also excited about the upcoming performance and being thought of as a positive role model:
“My message is always that it doesn’t matter where you come from, go for whatever it is you want to do,” he said. “Don’t let life or distractions get in your way. Don’t fall for peer pressure. Be yourself, be the person you want to be. The best thing you can ever do is bring what you want to the table.”
Also performing with the OMG Girlz and Diggy will be New Orleans very own, Roots of Music.
The Essence Festival is held Independence Day weekend, July 5th-8th.
