UPCOMING: BALLERINA MICHAELA DEPRINCE
Seventeen-year-old Michaela DePrince defies gravity with her leaps and has defied the odds with her talent as a ballerina.
Although the West African Sierra Leone orphan saw horrible violence in her war-stricken native home, she managed to beat the odds and discover her passion in ballet. “My rebelliousness in Sierra Leone helped me survive there, and it stayed with me until I moved to the States and realized I was in a safe place with caring parents,” she said in an interview with Teen Vogue.
Aside from performing, Michaela is currently featured in the documentary First Position, which follows six dancers as they compete for coveted dance spots. She has also appeared on “Dancing with the Stars” and is in her last year at the American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in New York City.
Michaela is truly an inspiration with her ability to channel her life and use it in her movement. She said “I take what’s in my past and put it in my body. My life is proof that no matter what situation you’re in, as long as you have a supportive family, you can achieve anything.”
