GABBY DOUGLAS MEETS THE DUCHESS, RESPONDS TO HAIR COMMENTS
Two-time gold medalist Gabby Douglas has yet another reason to smile. While in London, she got a chance to meet Duchess Kate Middleton. The 16-year-old Olympic gymnast says of meeting the famous London lady, “I met Kate, the duchess, that was a cool experience for me. She loved our leos (leotards).”
Gabby’s recent history-making victories have not made her at all vain. In fact, she has stayed quite humble through it all, making sure to give thanks and show appreciation. She is, however, proud of her accomplishments, as she should be. She says, “I’ve always wanted to inspire people, and the thing about the Olympics, this quote ‘inspire a generation’ – so, you know, I can check that off my bucket list.”
As far as all the negative publicity she has received about her hair, Gabby tells hercritics:
“They have no idea what they’re talking about. You sweat and all the gel and hairspray comes out. Even if we did fix our hair, our coach would be like, ‘This is not a beauty pageant! Leave it alone.’”
“It’s so disrespectful! I’m not thinking about that. I’m thinking about bringing a gold medal home. I use great Pantene products in my hair. They make my hair silky, shiny and healthy.”

All her achievements and people worry about her hair. Sign of the times.
Tell’em Gabby! And I hope Pantene picks you up as spokesperson…good luck to you!
How she responded to the hair comments was very classy. So proud of her!
I don’t see the problem with her hair. She’s a beautiful and talented young lady, and she’s going far. I heard she’s estimated to make $90 million from endorsements. So, hair haters get over yourself.
I hate the way fans and the media are attacking Gabby. First her hair, now about her mother filing bankruptcy. People need to either support her or as my grandfather used to say if you dont have anything positive to say, dont say anything at all.”
Work your magic Gabby put pantene out there so we can see you on a pantene commercial
Damn, I was thinking the same thing. I L O V E I T
You go Gabby! I’m surprised people aren’t talking about Carmelita Jeter’s hair or Serena’s hair.
I guess Black America would have been happier if Gabby had a lace front. Lol! Great job Gabby!
ITS NOT BLACK AMERICA. IT’S AMERICA’S ISSUE. BLACK AMERICA IS DID NOT MAKE THOSE NEGATIVE COMMENTS. IGNORANT PEOPLE MADE THOSE NEGATIVE COMMENTS. DONT BLAME MY ENTIRE RACE ROGUE621
No, Connie, if you followed this story from the beginning, you would know that it was one of us that made the comment about Gabby’s hair. That’s so typical our black people, especially women. We are so catty and superficial. I was embarrassed when I read the twitter posting by another African American woman who despite all that Gabby had accomplished, could only comment that someone needed to do her hair. Gabby belongs to US. One of US is doing better than any other and all this woman can talk about is Gabby’s hair. It’s not the media doing it to us. We’re doing it to ourselves.
NO MONICA YOU DON’T GET IT. THE MEDIA IS TO BLAME. THERE WERE PLENTY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN WHO MADE POSITIVE COMMENTS YET THE MEDIA CHOSE TO TAKE A FEW NEGATIVE COMMENTS TO MAKE OUR RACE FEEL BAD. OUR RACE IS NOT TO BLAME. THAT IS STEREOTYPING. THERE WERE NEGATIVE COMMENTS MADE FROM CAUCASIONS ABOUT THE OTHER CAUCASION GYMNIST FROM TEAM USA AND YET THE MEDIA CHOSE NOT TO POST THAT. INSTEAD THEY WANTED TO MAKE PEOPLE LIKE YOU MONICA HATE YOUR OWN RACE. SADLY IT WORKED. I AM ONE OF THOSE AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN WHO POSTED POSITIVE COMMENTS ABOUT GABBY. SO FOCUS ON THAT.
AND MONICA. THE FACT THAT YOU THINK ITS’ SO TYPICAL IS SAD. AS IF CAUCASIONS DONT MAKE NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT OUR HAIR, OR EVEN THEIR OWN HAIR. SO PLEASE STOP IT. DONT FALL INTO THE TRAP OF AMERICA. OUR MEDIA IS NOT ON OUR SIDE AND THE SOONER YOU GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEAD, THE BETTER.
That’s my future daughter in law right there! I’m so proud of her! She is a beautiful, humble, God loving, intelligent, well-spoken young lady. Her personality is genuine. This will not be the last time we hear of her doing great things. As for the hair comments..I’ve said all I’m going to say. Now Pantene, give her that endorsement!
Wait…, Gabby has hair???? I didn’t notice!!! I guess I was distracted by her FLAWLESS performance! SMH…..O_o
I’m more annoyed at the people reporting and protesting the hair comments. I never would have heard of it if I didn’t hear the hair defenders left and right. They bought attention to the comments that must have been very minute. People say all kinds of things on the internet, why is it a news story. Its like reopening the wound over and over again and making ignorance far more important than it should be.
That’s what I’m talking about Gabby!!!…you let those idiot people know that winning & bringing home your Gold Medals , is much more important than your hair!!!. And your right..the OLYMPICS is NOT a fashion show!!!. Your such an AMAZING young lady / Gymnast..and I’m so very proud of your accomplishments!!!!. :O)
Ok you hear that Pantene she uses your products now sign her to an endorsement deal! *sidenote* I also use the Pantene for women of color products and I love them.
Lol she has a cute personality and I love how positive she is!
I blame the media for blowing a few online comments completely out of proportion! I think they purposely did it because they’re always looking for negativity and making it seem like there’s some rift or issue in the Af. Am. culture. Hair is important to MOST women of all ethnicities. So what, a few ignorant comments were made online – what’s new? We overwhelmingly support and are proud of Gabby!
I AGREE. IT WAS THE MEDIA’S FAULT.
I agree with PlainMean. I saw more people fussing about people making negative hair comments than actual negative hair comments itself. I was even puzzled like what.. I see a ponytail!!! It was just a few comments the media blew out of proportion to take away from “OUR” shine.
Say it Gabby! U did just what u set out to do and I’m so proud of u kudos baby!
Very good response to critics. Let her worry about the gold and her future stylist and agent will worry about her hair and image.
As popular as she is this minute, Michelle Obama may let her use her hair stylist.
After another look, she looks like a mini First Lady.
I’m so proud of her, I love how her and all the others have represented our country.
As far as the hair comments, just ignore them sweetie because ignorance is bliss and it will always be people who focus on the wrong things!
