Just a few weeks ago, a judge awarded Usher primary custody of his sons Usher V, 4, and Naviyd Ely, 3, and now the singer has opened up about his custody battle with ex-wife Tameka Foster-Raymond.

In an interview with television host Oprah Winfrey that aired on Sunday, Usher discussed his bitter custody battle.

“I’ve been a man of integrity throughout the entire process, which I hope my boys will understand. That’s the way to go. That’s the way to be,” the singer said.

Usher insists that he is not an absentee father as his ex-wife claimed in court papers.

“Absentee from the aspect of having to go and work, that probably would be her version or idea what absentee would be. But no, I’m not an absentee father at all.”

As for his failed marriage to Tameka, he said, “When we had Usher V, it was by far the most incredible moment of my life. I couldn’t have been more happy. After that, I did get a great sense of the insecurities that were there and the fact that she wasn’t coping well with being in this position, being married to Usher, and all that came with that.”

  1. Usher always seemed to be a respectful guy, so it’s no surprise to me he wants to instill respect in his children. Sad things couldn’t work out with Tameka. There are things about her, us as outsiders can only imagine. I hope things get better between them.
All I know is I enjoy viewing pictures of Usher with his sons. His sons are beautiful. It’s interesting to see them growing. I remember when Usher V was teeny tiny, he and Naviyd are such big boys now. Wasn’t long ago they were little babies! Usher seems to be a great father.

  2. I’m familiar with the family court system and I’m almost sure the courts don’t just hand over young children to the parent who makes the most money. For the judge to have determined he is responsible enough to have primary custody (in spite of the fact that he’s an international superstar), there has to be something deeper than just his pockets. I saw the interview and I think he said as much as he needed to. Quite frankly he doesn’t owe anybody (other than his children) any explanations for his actions. I just hope he and Tameka can become cordial for the sake of the kids. That’s just my opinion :-)

  3. I saw the interview and thought it was disgusting how he let fans and his controlling mother who refuses to let him be a man! control his LIFE and sway his decision to leave his wife in the immature manner that he did.

It is disgusting how his mother as a WOMAN who feels so strong about her son can contribute to the taking of another woman’s sons!!!!! disgusting!!!!!

Now it is clear why Usher can’t grow up! He admitted that he will have a lot of help with the boys from his mother, aunt and grandmother. They are ALL contributing to REPLACING Tameka! and it is disgusting! If he needs this much help when he is on the road that is even more proof that he does not NEED primary custody of those boys!

Tameka never impeded on his rights to see his boys and was fine with joint custody and was NEVER proven to be an unfit mom. So Usher’s MONEY won. Just DISGUSTING!

    • There was a reason why Usher left Tameka, and by her character, the reason was obvious. You know absolutely nothing about their situation, so have a trillion seats and keep your “disgusting” comments to yourself.

      • I have every right to my opinion as you do. Noone has really explicitly stated what Tameka exactly did wrong and neither have you. Sounds like you are blinded by the celebrity lights so take these eyeshades and fall back.

    • Everyone can use help when it comes to raising children. Do you know who helped Tameka? The boys’ fathers because they all had custody, except for the older boy. IDK about Usher’s mother controlling him, but she was right about Tameka in the first place & if he would have listened to her, he wouldn’t be in this mess.

Usher was a cheater & she knew that as she was his mistress when he was with Chilli, yet she still married him. Neither are perfect, Tameka may not be an unfit mother, but Usher seems to be the better parent.

People say Tameka is keeping her last name Raymond for the boys sake, how come she was Foster & not Glover (Kile’s father) prior to meeting Usher?

    • The other upgrades are nice. Good job BCK. I figured as much with the moderation. But we, or I, like using the ‘terror watch list’ term. :). Thanks for the reply.

  4. I can’t watch it while at work, will check it out when I get home. I do think he hesitated to state he cheated on her. But I do believe he’s a good father.

BCK, I like the like & dislike buttons. However, when you guys could have kept it the way it was. The top is nice but the way the threads are listed are ehh. It looked cleaner & less cluttered the way it was before. Just my opinion. I’m sure I’ll get use to it. 😀

  5. Glad I saw the interview. Usher seemed to have answered all of the questions to the best of his ability. I’m sure he realizes that his two sons will someday see the interview. Thank goodness he and his mother reconciled.

  6. I really enjoyed the interview. He seemed to open up about a long alot things regarding Tameka and his failed marriage. I liked when she asked him if he made love to his own music…lol!! Alot of the answers he seemed to hesitate on though, like if he cheated.
