Aminah Barrett is showing everyone around her that football isn’t just for the boys. The eighth grade Houston resident is one of only seven girls in the city that plays football with the guys. “I like playing linebacker,” she told KMOV St. Louis in an interview. “I like to hit people and be aggressive.”
Although she may be the only female on the team at her school, Twin Creeks Middle School, the team doesn’t give Aminah any special treatment. “Our kids go hard with her and that way she gets the full experience,” Coach Chris Brice told KMOV.
The love of football runs in the family. Aminah’s mother, Mika Frizzell played in the Women’s Football League in Louisiana. She supports her daughter’s decision to play on the football team. “I love her and I’m very proud of her, very proud of her,” said her mother.
Aminah has yet to decide just how far she wants to take her football career. For now, she’s enjoying right where she is. She does have some advice for girls that may be thinking about playing. She said, “Never let anyone ever tell you that you can’t. If this is something that you want to do, you work hard. You put your mind to it. Never give up,”
