Young actress Quvenzhane Wallis recently attended the 2013 National Board Of Review Awards Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City on January 8th. She looked as cute as ever in a green dress as she posed on the red carpet.
The Nine-year-old actress has gotten countless rave reviews for her performance as Hushpuppy in “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and it doesn’t look like the praise will be dying down any time soon. The young, rising star recently chatted with CBS News about her character.
When asked about Hushpuppy and if she knew anyone like her, Quvenzhane said, “No, ma’am. She doesn’t wear any pants, her hair is puffy.” Her genuine and big personality helped Quvenzhane land the lead role. When she auditioned for the part, she was asked to throw a stuffed animal at one of the producers, but the then, 5-year old Quvenzhane, would not do it. “It’s not right to throw things at people you don’t know – she was being defiant, but she was being defiant on the grounds of right and wrong,” ‘Beast’ director Benh Zeitlin recalled. “And that’s who Hushpuppy is. She’s this incredibly defiant warrior girl. I don’t think I could have articulated that about her character until that moment in the audition.”
Although “Beasts” was Quvezhane’s first movie, she was a natural-born actress. She even helped her costar Dwight Henry, also a first time actor during filming. “…And she stepped in, pushed me to the side – It’s like this, this what they want you to do,” Henry recalled. “She was actually directing me, at five years old. She is way beyond her age, she’s amazing, taught me a lot of things I need to know.”
The young starlet has received buzz regarding the Oscars. What’s her take on it? She said, “I’m excited, but I won’t, like, let it get in my way.”
