Democratic Republic of Congo’s young actress Rachel Mwanza represented the motherland at the 2013 Academy Awards last night. She donned a multi-colored ankara dress with an asymmetric hemline.

Rachel is the star of the film “War Witch,” which was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. The teen was only able to attend the event after acquiring a visa a few days before the Oscars ceremony.

In the film, Rachel plays a child that was kidnapped and forced to live a life of guerrilla warfare. Since being cast in the movie, the 16-year old’s life has changed for the better, winning a best actress award at the Berlin Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival.

On Saturday, February 23rd Rachel attended the Independent Spirit Awards after having to quickly find a dress worthy for her walk on the red carpet. “I’m so excited to be in Los Angeles. I’ve never seen the ocean before!” Rachel told PEOPLE through a translator. “I’m tired from my long trip, but way too excited to rest!”

Although Rachel and her film are nominated against veteran actors, one disappointment that she has experienced so far has been no sighting of one of her favorite girl-power entertainers, Beyoncé. “Beyoncé is my favorite in the whole world. Why is she not here?!” she joked.

Congrats on the nomination Rachel!

  1. I like how in the first pic, those people are looking at her like “Who is that?” “& she’s posing for the pic like “If you ain’t know, you about to know!” hahaha. She’s pretty, don’t know who she is tho

  2. What a stunning beauty, representing our finest formal wear. I love her dress and hair! She did such an incredible job in the movie and although I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would (it’s still good though, I just had some few problems with it), she was amazing in it. I hope we see more of her and more of African beauty being showcased at events such as this.
