HOT TOPIC: WILLOW SMITH’S SONG DEEMED ‘INAPPROPRIATE.’ WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?
Twelve-year-old Willow Smith recently released a new song, just in time for the summer. The new single, “Summer Fling” talks about having fun in a summer relationship but staying uncommitted. In the song Willow sings, “It’s just a couple months but we do it anyway.” In another part she continues, “Don’t really care what we do tonight. Good night kisses if the mood is right laying by the beach with you wishing this will never end.”
Some people have taken the track at face value and enjoy the lightness of the song and the video. However, there are others that have deemed the tune as ‘inappropriate,’ saying that the subject matter is far too mature for a twelve-year-old to sing about. Some are also criticizing the music video because of the male portraying Willow’s boyfriend, calling him ‘too old’ be be in a relationship with the tween starlet.
Willow is currently signed with Jay-Z’s record label, Roc Nation. Her 2010 hit “Whip My Hair” took the UK by storm and peeked at #11 in the US. Although Willow has spent her life in the spotlight, she has admitted to wanting to be out of the celebrity eye. “Let’s say if a regular girl is going to the book store, it’s ten times harder to go everywhere (when you’re famous)…it’s going to take me ten more minutes to get there. Because I have to call security,’ she said in an interview with Red Table Talk.
What do you think? Is Willow’s new song too mature for a 12-year-old or is she just being a regular young girl and having fun? Thoughts?
